Hey Matt. Checking out this video after not seeing much of your content in a while and I'm really pleasantly surprised. I really appreciate the brevity and concise nature of this video. You helped provide a lot of valuable information while respecting the viewers time. The editing and scripting were snappier without seeming frantic or uncomfortable to watch. Great work and thanks for the insightful review.
Thanks Nic, I really appreciate that. Yes I seem to be getting closer to something that works. (Takes 3-4x longer to make but hopefully more watchable). Thanks for noticing.
For screw-mount, I recommend checking out the older version of the Voigtlander 25/4.0 Snapshot-Skopar lens. No rangefinder coupling, but similar to this 28/5.6 lens, you will always hit focus anyway when just roughly estimating the zone focus at this wide focal length.
Ordered one last week, received M10 yesterday, been playing with it with my Voigtlander 35 and Leica 50 rigid. I like it, very much, or is that an understatement
Matt, Does the focus knob feel a little metal-on-metal “grindy” when moving + cheap on your copy? Mine does. The turning is smooth. Just the actual little nub feels cheap when I use it.
Great review! would you be able to review the 28mm summaron from Leica? I have the 28mm summilux and I'm trying to decide between the elmarit and the summaron for point and shoot as a secondary option. Thanks
Thanks Pablo! If I ever get the Summaron to test I will for sure. Summaron gives vintage look, Elmarit gives sharp modern look so it will be easy to decide based on your taste.

I only want to use the 28mm for streetphotography in daylight. Of course the Fuji 27mm f.2.8 is another alternative, but it I dislike the looks, the looks ;)
Hey Jan, sorry my Canon 28/2.8 video is still overdue. The Canon should easily win for sharpness and 2.8. The TTA lens is a copy of the softer Summaron,.. but it does make nice photos I must say.

I liked watching your report. Despite the small dimensions, I find no point in purchasing such a limited lens. On the opposite side, and despite the exaggerated dimensions, I prefer the 28mm f/1.4 made by 7artisans every day over this lens.
Very nice little lens .. I love the look but I do not like the 5.6 aperture ... :-) So I 'll will go for the Ultron 28 mm f 2... still did not pull the trigger but ... very soon... Thanks Jerome! Yes f5.6 is not a European winter lens is it haha.. has it got light this week yet!? Uff. Yes hopefully I can test more if this video does OK.
That looks like a nice small lens TTArtisan has put together there. I am indeed considering getting a 28mm lens for street photography, but I've got my eyes on a Minolta 28mm f2.8 M-Rokkor lens. It's much bigger and as with all items from Minolta, it's getting quite old. But it really suits my soft spot for Minolta cameras and lenses...

BTW, if you ever get a chance to review a Leitz 28mm f/6.3 Hektor I bet there are a lot of us in your viewing audience that would love to see your take on that vintage lens.
It could be very fine to see a comparison of the TTArtisan 28mm 5.6 to the original Leitz (Leica) Summaron 28mm 5.6 screw mount (1955 - 1963) and the "new" Leica Summaron-M 28mm 5.6 😊

Because I have that I am reluctant to buy this, but I may in the near future just to have a 28mm in my arsenal. Price is good and its a real looker. Just gotta have that hood with it! Not a 28mm person but its good for landscapes etc.

Damn you were fast to get and review this lens! I have been sure I’d be getting this lens for my M6 once it had been announce but now I think should give it a pass, at least for now. Completely odd filter size is a bummer. Good luck finding yellow filter for it. Of course you can use an adapter but it adds like 1/5 to the lens size which kills the beautiful design of this lens. Hey Matt, thanks for the vid and doing this preview on different cameras. Still as this lens is trying to be as close to the Summaron as can be, if you look at the pics it’s definitely not in my view especially when it comes to the colour rendition. The reds and greens on the Summaron are much more vivid and saturated while other colours are rather pale giving it this distinct look. It’s a pity that TTArtisans is mostly living and selling on the promise to get a Leica copy for the fraction of a price but if you look closer it’s a totally different ballgame. I am not saying that this lens isn’t fun but I think its important to say that this isn’t the real deal.
Great information Andy, thanks. I have the 35mm Summaron but not the 28mm. Yes I think people know that you get what you pay for to an extent... but equally a fun lens and good value for those not looking for the complete Leica look.
A rather odd reply, as far as I am concerned, likely the most ridiculous response I have read in a long while. Does anyone really expect to get a Leica equivalent lens for 1/10th the price of the Leica equivalent? I thank Matt for his review and the pics. He was very clear it is not a Leica equivalent, but a nice affordable option. I wonder how you might respond to a similar review of my pre-war Leitz 28mm f/6.3 Hektor, worth a small fortune these days but not in terms of "color rendition." If Matt lived in the USA I would be glad to send it him to review just to get his take on a true vintage Leica lens. "TTArtisans is mostly living and selling on the promise to get a Leica copy for the fraction of a price but if you look closer it’s a totally different ballgame." No, actually they are not. They are offering lenses at affordable prices to those of us that don't like the idea of spending US $3k on very outdated slow lenses to use on our Leica digital cameras, or our Leica/Leitz film cameras. No offense intended but you really seem to miss the boat as far as what TT Artisan is bringing to us.
this lens would be a perfect mate for the body MDa / MD-2/... good for a trip to the mountains or walking through some high risk area (where it can be stolen).
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom So will you get the hood later? And will the later versions come with the hood? Maybe with the brass hood, the price will be like $350-$400
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I get it now, the lens you tested was handed out by TTartsian not not your own copy. I think that’s a darn good price for such a nice piece. It’s well made. I don’t care who made it, they did a good job it seems!
I got this lens in gold/brass (only sold through BH Photo, I think) and I love the look , the weight, and more or less the feel. But I noticed a very slight wobble in the aperture ring... has anybody else noticed that? I wonder if I got a bad copy...
Thanks Frank, I will try. It takes 2 days just to edit a video with digital images! Follow MrLeica.com and I’ll do a follow up written post and include some film as some as I can 👍🏻
Ordered! I got a 5% off 'deal' when I was faffing around doing this on my phone so it's costing £218.50 plus £5 for postage. I rather expect I might get a tug for import duty - but that ought to be around £45 or so and still decent enough for what looks like a fun lens.
Hey Matt, they may have changed the lens design, but I still see it as a copy. On the outside there is not much difference.......chinese copy it, we buy it and even some people recommend it. I rather stick to the original, picked one up this week, the best original lens for street photography: LOL
Just bought this lens. As someone who shoots this type of lens almost exclusively using hyperfocal, beware - the DOF scale on the lens is completely wrong. If you are shooting at f11, use the markings for f8. I could not understand why all my shots were soft until I figured this out. Seems like they just copied the markings from a Leica lens without calibrating to their own focus ring.
Ha i'm sorry, I edit out every micro pause to try to help people watch until the end of the video and keeping the videos shorter. It takes around 20hours to do this for a 10min video so perhaps I start to leave a few more in so I don't sound like I need a pee. Thanks for feedback!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I'm thinking of the Voightlander Nocton 75mm f/1.5 because it looks so pretty, the sample images are so good and I should have at least one Voightlander lens! 🙂
Matt, you should start all your reviews on lenses and cameras with this clear warning: BEWARE, YOU ARE GOING TO LOOK AT SHARP PHOTOGRAPHS, THEY CAN CAUSE AN INFERIORITY COMPLEX TO THE VIEWERS. The amount of high quality information on the analog and digital black and white photography can give you severe headaches. It is wise to be aware that fine artistic photos can be made with old cameras without autofocus, manual filmtransport, TTL , HSS and non coated lenses. Though they are made in China
Yes, it's small, but... This looks like a really crappy lens. Maximum apperture is 5.6, and it's still vignetting at f8, not to mension the flare. What's the point of buying a Leica, and then settle for this? You can get a way better lens, with a maximum apperture of 3.5, or even 2.8, with an slr camera, for less money, if you buy a Minolta, or any of the other big five. And you just need an adapter to fit it on a mirrorless digital camera. On Pentax or Nikon dslr, you don't even need that.
Thanks Steve, they picked an easy lens to copy as the Summaron was designed to be optically flawed. But yes it is well made so it'd only a matter of time I guess.
I'll be ready to catch the fallout from your "decline". :-) "When anyone can make a very cheap copy of Leica lenses..." But they haven't. Where's the copy of the high definition? It seems the decline is still well and truly on hold.
Ha ha .. just how intimidating did you appear to others? ... A man with a mask on, and 'firing' shots towards people from the hip! ;o) Take care out there Matt! :o)
Thanks Patrick! Nicely put haha. Yes it's based on the soft arty Leica Summaron and both lenses on digital give that heavier vignette look. The artist in me likes that.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I'm trying my best to like it and it's still in my basket online 😆 But I've watched several reviews now and it doesn't perform well 😞
They should just call it Leica instead of TT. Chinese companies have no shame in copying people products and claims to be the original one. A Japanese clothing company just lost a lawsuit to a Chinese copycat company that not only copy the product but use their name too.
I think other brands should watch out.. this was really nicely put together and finished. (an easy lens to copy I guess optics quality wise)(classic design)(not perfect)
During the '50s and 60, 's the Americans were convinced the Japanese could not build cars; the Germans were convinced that they could not build cameras, and the Swiss that they could not design and produce watches...until they were crushed by them, of course.
@@ongxa9346 and the British laughed at their motorcycles even as they were winning at the Isle of Man in the early 60's. I would not have bought a Leica last year without East Asian lenses being available.

You’ve nailed the look in your studio. It’s like we’re being welcomed in for a fireside chat.
Ah thank you! It was a bit too close to my face I noticed but noted. Will do it again.
pleeeeese TTArtisans make a black version!
They said no plans, I already asked.. but yes that would be a stealth street shooter!
this lens would be a perfect mate for the body MDa / MD-2/... good for a trip to the mountains or walking through some high risk area (where it can be stolen).
Yes for sure re. the bodies, agreed!
Did they forget to send you the hood?? How do you know if the hood is brass, if you don't mind me asking
The test sample when out without a hood. They write that the hood is made of brass. It’s a copy of the Leica hood.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom So will you get the hood later? And will the later versions come with the hood? Maybe with the brass hood, the price will be like $350-$400
@@ronitsingh85 the website shows list price includes hood. Brass itself it’s crazy expensive but some brands price it as such.
Nice Meg! Mine is quite tight if I remember but that can happen to any lens, even Leica. Yes it might just be some copies.
Can get an old 35 3.5 screw mount for about the same price and it’s almost as small
Yes the Summaron. I showed that lens in my last posted video next to lots of other small lenses.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom indeed!! Definitely a bargain Leica lens. A little soft wide open but not a bad lens at all! And bloody tiny!
Matt! Show us some photos from this lens on film my guy 🥺
Congrats!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I'll report back when it arrives. Pergear are suggesting 'December' - other places January or February. 🤔
@@FFVoyager I think local market getting them before Europe/ US etc
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I think Pergear, from their phone number, are in Beijing so we'll see!
@@FFVoyager ah good detective work!
Wouldnt a canon 28/2.8 make more sense? Same size, two stops faster when needed.
Yes the Canon is great. I have that lens.
Hey Matt, they may have changed the lens design, but I still see it as a copy. On the outside there is not much difference.......chinese copy it, we buy it and even some people recommend it. I rather stick to the original, picked one up this week, the best original lens for street photography: LOL
Thanks Ronald, yes the original still wins of course. I would pick up the LTM version for my Barnacks if I shot more street and saw a good price.
It’s a nice option rather than trying to source vintage options in often poor condition
Thanks Ronald, yes. It very nice lens for a new release.
Can I use this lens on my Sony A7 using an adapter Leica M to E mount …
Yes of course, no problem.
Matt, is there a reason TT Artisan is ignoring the ltm community?
Hi, i'm not sure but they are missing out. I will mention it too them again. Same goes for Voigtlander!
Ah very interesting, thanks for sharing this as I do like the lens
I assume this one needs no calibration before use, unlike that super-fast lens they made.
Correct it was perfect out the box
Why not just buy a Ricoh GR3 🤷🏻♂️
True! A great option for 28mm shooters I hear.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom The Ricoh III costs 3x more than this lens.
@@ongxa9346 ah good to know! Thanks
TTArtisans needs a new font for their branding. The comic-sans makes it look extremely cheap.
Thanks, nice idea!
Wow Matt. You spoke so quickly. Was it because you had to............go pee really badly? lol.
Ha i'm sorry, I edit out every micro pause to try to help people watch until the end of the video and keeping the videos shorter. It takes around 20hours to do this for a 10min video so perhaps I start to leave a few more in so I don't sound like I need a pee. Thanks for feedback!
Your voice is like C3PO :)
Haha sorry! Hopefully it will improve :)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom But I like it!
@@bartoszkazek5965 thanks but it needs improvement..some of my videos are less C3PO than others :)
It must say Leica....period.
Thanks Frank.. I'm like that with my Lumix S5 vs SL :)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I'm thinking of the Voightlander Nocton 75mm f/1.5 because it looks so pretty, the sample images are so good and I should have at least one Voightlander lens! 🙂
Matt, you should start all your reviews on lenses and cameras
with this clear warning:
BEWARE, YOU ARE GOING TO LOOK AT SHARP PHOTOGRAPHS,
THEY CAN CAUSE AN INFERIORITY COMPLEX TO THE VIEWERS.
The amount of high quality information on the analog and digital
black and white photography
can give you severe headaches.
It is wise to be aware that fine artistic photos can be made with
old cameras without autofocus, manual filmtransport, TTL , HSS
and non coated lenses. Though they are made in China
Haha thanks, I like sharp :)
Thanks, I think this lens was more for those looking to buying the Leica version. Agree Nikon and Minolta offer great value. I use those too.
Part of the appeal is it's small size. I love my Nikon 28 3.5 but + adapter it gets a bit long. This + adapter on my Fuji would still be small
@@ryanbeer5262 ah yes good plan. I’m the same with trying to have a compact setup including any adapters
I think this is the beginning of the decline of Leica and it's culture. When anyone can make a very cheap copy of Leica lenses, then where will go?
Thanks Steve, they picked an easy lens to copy as the Summaron was designed to be optically flawed. But yes it is well made so it'd only a matter of time I guess.
I'll be ready to catch the fallout from your "decline". :-)
"When anyone can make a very cheap copy of Leica lenses..." But they haven't. Where's the copy of the high definition? It seems the decline is still well and truly on hold.
Ha ha .. just how intimidating did you appear to others? ... A man with a mask on, and 'firing' shots towards people from the hip! ;o)
Take care out there Matt! :o)
Ha thanks! From the hip, they never see it :)
Photos say it all , for that reason I'm out .
Thanks Patrick! Nicely put haha. Yes it's based on the soft arty Leica Summaron and both lenses on digital give that heavier vignette look. The artist in me likes that.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I'm trying my best to like it and it's still in my basket online 😆
But I've watched several reviews now and it doesn't perform well 😞
They should just call it Leica instead of TT. Chinese companies have no shame in copying people products and claims to be the original one. A Japanese clothing company just lost a lawsuit to a Chinese copycat company that not only copy the product but use their name too.
Thanks for the information
Thank you, for the review. But i will boycott everything from China #ChinaZi no matter how cheap they are.
Thanks, yes I understand.
Chinese attempt at making lenses
I think other brands should watch out.. this was really nicely put together and finished. (an easy lens to copy I guess optics quality wise)(classic design)(not perfect)
Just wait until you find out that the China have been making lenses for ages now
During the '50s and 60, 's the Americans were convinced the Japanese could not build cars; the Germans were convinced that they could not build cameras, and the Swiss that they could not design and produce watches...until they were crushed by them, of course.
@@ongxa9346 and the British laughed at their motorcycles even as they were winning at the Isle of Man in the early 60's.
I would not have bought a Leica last year without East Asian lenses being available.
@@ongxa9346 dad says the same about classic motorcycle and what then happened :)
Nope. Not on my Leica. Voigtlander yes. Zeiss yes. TT artisan , no.
Thanks Steve, to date I’ve been the same but mostly because I owned lenses before the new Chinese ones all came out.
