- Sand, if/when needed. Buff the rest. Following ANY sanding, do this. Well, try it anyways.
Sorry for the relationship tangents I went on. Today was obviously an odd one for me. Sorry you had to hear all that.
I have many more (300+)videos; before and after boat detailing videos including boat waxing, boat buffing...
Have a question? Comments section will be replied to.
Anyone can hit a rock with a hammer; getting the rock to look like something that belongs in museums and books... Takes a love of hitting rocks with a purpose and not just the right tools/products.
I use a DeWalt DWP849X
If I'm going for perfection in gelcoat, I don't use a ceramic (unless a very new boat) I prefer the ease, cost and reliability of Fire Glaze by RMP. Make sure you get all the oxidation out of the gelcoat, get a great finish, clean and strip the surface and then apply Fire Glaze.

There's a "marine" version but it has the same main ingredient as Fire Glaze, just a different lubricant/carrier solution made to be environment friendly. I find it dries rather fast and as I'm in a hot climate, I use Fire Glaze instead of Restructure Marine Polish. I like their Mirasol spray for all the interior furnishings as well.

Lee, amazing work! Thank you for taking the time to show how you get that magical shine! I can’t wait to try it on my 246 Rinker Captiva. It’s red, so that should be fun!
You'll come out a little pink but I have faith brother!
Thank you for taking the time to watch these and actually apply whatever you do.
I'm here if you get stuck.

AMAZING how many owners don’t care about the ghost of registry numbers past. Touches like that make a huge difference to the overall look of a boat IMO. Neat idea dropping the tongue jack so you don’t need to use a 3 step to reach the deck. Awesome work as always Lee. You’re right- you have to enjoy the day-to-day. Have a great Independence Day.
Lol, I'm only 5'8" so yeah, it helps. I also hate when they stack the registration stickers on top on one another, year after year or, worse than that, all in a row like a history of the boat, yuck.
Glad you like the vid, thanks for the kind words and motivation. Thanks Mike.

Not gonna lie but i fast forwarded and stopped only when i noticed you talking. Made the whole video more interesting although im here for the boat polishing content. Good stuff!
Well, I'm glad you got some parts.
I do a lot more "showing" and less talking in my videos. I want people to see the cadence and effort. How long things take and what it sounds like. (when you get to the video where I'm Blindfolded on black gelcoat, you'll see how sound can be a tool to use)
I also, don't enjoy talking on a video or talking in general really. If I could live in a place where I'd never need to use my voice, I'd be OK with that I think.
I know they're boring, even to me. I have a hard time watching them later. There is however a reason why everything in the video, is in the video (editing mistakes excused) I also, do a lot of talking while I work, you might miss some of what I'm putting out there. Just say'n.
Happy to help any way that works. Enjoy!

Watching your videos gives me so much hope for my Gelcoat - Thought it was horrible at first, but you bring stuff back that is way worse than mine. Now to figure out what to do with the Textured Fiberglass headliner inside.
Paint it? Glad you got inspired. Thanks for the kind words.

Wow shine like diamiond
Well, better than showing the discolored gelcoat from the bad lettering if nothing else. Thanks brother!

Lee, I have a 2002 boat, with white gelcoat. Moderate oxidation and blacks stains that I think are mold.. I washed, power washed and then wet sanded an area with 1500 grit. I buffed it with Presta gel coat compound, Maguire's #91 and tried Collinite. It looks better but I just can't get it to come up.... I have a Shurhold Polisher Pro and the Porter Cable one that you use in your videos. Should I try the 3M super duty and just buy the Dewalt? Looking for your hard earned advice/expertise. Thank you in advance.
The things I find work the best are 3M wool pads (I don't like their prices either) and either: Super-Duty (which you probably don't need now) Heavy Cut and Perfect-it ex ac. If you stop messing around with consumer-grade products and move to stuff that doesn't care to impress you with a label, these work, every time on every kind of gelcoat in every kind of oxidation level.
3M makes the best, hands-down, cutting wheels. Nobody else even comes close, I've tried them all in almost 20 years.
Start with those you don't need another buffer if yours works and doesn't smoke after a few hours.
Watch a handful of my video; past the tools, there's a process and a thought path I take you on if you're patient and watching with the intent to learn and not just skim and mimic. 200+ videos, you'll see what you need to see I believe.
Thank for the view, the comment/question and I wish you the best of luck. I'm here if you get stuck.
# 91 by McGuire's is a decent compound but only if the buffer spins fast on a flat surface. It is aggressive if used correctly but even I hardly ever use it (once a year)
Collinites is a caranuba-based wax.. C'mon man. We've been to the moon, there's a car floating in space, use the science and go to a polymer-based wax like I list in my descriptions. Stop using 50 year old tech.
If I'm right (assuming so) you could have avoided the Sanding altogether if you had any Super-Duty and done what you did in a third the time and cost.

I’ve got 30+ hrs in my ski nautique, just doing to port and starboard outer sides. Removed vinyl and still have light ghosting driving me insane..have multiple hours with super duty just in the decal areas. The gel coat overall looks phenomenal, but the decal areas are not giving up. I really feel like sanding may be needed, any thoughts?
Then sand. I have videos where I sand decal ghosting out, it's ok. You haven't offended me. I just don't like when guys sand the whole boat for no reason when compound will work.
I'll use my ranfom orbital buffer and a sanding disk to get things to go faster on a stubborn area but then finish with the rotary buffer once the colors match.
Good luck. Glad you're having some good results.
