  • For this trip, the dogs and I go to northwest Oklahoma for the first time to hunt quail on a WMA. As first timers, there is plenty to figure out, but we do find some pheasants and quail. There is also truck camping.. with coyotes all around.

    Love your dogs. Britts are so versatile and quick to pick up skills on the fly.
    You really earned those birds.

    Hello from Eastern Oklahoma! Good Video! The bird hunting in Oklahoma has suffered lately. The Wildlife Department doesn't do a whole lot for habitat on public land. In recent years it seems they are trying to do better in some areas. We as a group, there's 8 of us, decided the best thing they could do on most public lands is to burn off the old growth. But I see habitat and predators being the biggest problem. I guess I need to take up coyote hunting. I really like your truck camping setup. Mines not nearly as cozy. Thanks for letting me tag along! Love the Brittneys. Happy New Year! God Bless!

      Thanks for watching and for your comment! I actually just got back home from another short trip to Oklahoma. I went to a different WMA this year but that is still in NW Oklahoma. Probably shouldn't have done that as I'm still figuring things out. Anyway, I got into some birds (but not a ton). Also, I had boots on my dogs this year. I did think that some of the cover was too thick to be ideal for quail... maybe there was a little more rain there this past summer? I like Oklahoma for quail and will definitely be back. Thanks again!

    Having never hunted in cactus country, you answered my first question about dog's paws, Thanks. I'm in Minnesota and tomorrow ends our pheasant season. Snow depth ended it actually a week ago.

    Live in NW Oklahoma myself and can tell you that the quail are way, way down in our area as well. Sad situation.
    Enjoyed the video, and your Brits. Thanks for sharing..

    Man you and the dogs earned those 2 quail! I bet that felt great to connect on a double after all that walking. Makes that lunch taste all the better!

    • @thebirdbum9182
      @thebirdbum9182  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We definitely earned the two birds... but you're right, it was such a good ending (including me doing my part with the shotgun) that I felt good about the trip overall when I started back home after lunch. Thanks for watching and for your comment!

    That was interesting. Amazingly, I live in Tulsa and I’m down to one good Brittany but still find birds on public land far east of where you were and no sandburrs and no porcupines.

      That's great that you've got good birds close to home! I'm pretty sure there were more birds where I was hunting than what we found. Hopefully I'll be more on target next time. Thanks for watching and for your comment!

    Enjoyed the video. I was researching pheasant hunting in OK and found it. Im in texas and have been looking for some adjacent pheasant and quail hunting. I really like the truck camp set up ya have too. Are you able to camp at the walk in areas? Or are you camped at a different location? Im looking at the walk in areas on the western portion of the state. If I may ask...were you targeting those same areas?

    • @thebirdbum9182
      @thebirdbum9182  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for watching and for your comment! I don't know that this part of OK is known for pheasants, but we did find some. I was at a WMA in the panhandle of the state, and I did camp in the WMA. I'm enjoying the truck camping and I'll camp just about anywhere... including rest areas or truck stops on long trips to get where I'm going. Works well. Thanks again!

    Excellent. Nice hunt Thanks for the ride along, Did you find water? Been sleeping in the truck since I've had a truck, Good way to go. How did the pups turn out? are they spoken for ??

    • @thebirdbum9182
      @thebirdbum9182  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I didn't find any water. In fact, there was a riverbed not far away that was completely dry. I'm hoping there will be more moisture there this coming year. The pups are great. We had 10, and all are spoken for except one female and two males. They should be ready for homes the last week of Feb or first week of March. Thanks for watching!

      @@thebirdbum9182 We've had three years of dry summers with lots of heat that has, in my humble opinion, negatively affected the quail hatch. In particular the number of scaled (blue) quail seems to be noticeably down. However, it seems that El Nino has maybe decided to help us out and send some timely rains. Hope springs eternal in a quail hunter's heart! Last season was tough but when numbers are even average those sage hills offer some wonderful bird hunting opportunities. Bring those Brittanies back and I'll spend a day or two afield with you.

      @thebirdbum9182  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wanderingwingshooter Sounds good! I've heard some rumors that maybe conditions might be better this spring. Unfortunately, I have to work around a work schedule for these longer trips, but I'm hoping to make it out again the week between Christmas and New Years. Thanks for your offer, and I'll keep you posted.
