Born and raised hunting Gambels in AZ without a dog... you really have to chase them dirtbags, it's definitely NOT pheasant hunting. Lots of non-desert folks have a learning curve on that :-) Beautiful scenery too... thanks
I'm out in West Valley of PHX metro, been tough hunting and still hitting highs of 70s out my way. They aren't hardly holding for my dogs but don't have as good of cover where I hunt! Great video! Love the Brittanys!
I hear you there man! We ran into a few days where it hit 70, we just chilled out for the most part during the warmer parts of the day. Birds not holding is no joke! Thanks for following along.
Great videos! Awesome scenery and great dog work! Curious how the camping was down there. Did the tent with the electric heater end up being comfortable with temps down in the 20’s in January? Anything you would do different when it came to camping and lodging down there?
Thanks man! Camping went pretty good, in all honesty. The tent stayed pretty warm at night, the one thing that I'd do different is sleep on a cot vs air. The air inside cools to whatever the air temp is and takes a lot to heat up.
@@jaredquade3960 we went to Montana back in September and hunted Sage grouse, sharpies and huns. I still have videos to put together from that trip. Hadn’t been able to get to that because I got too busy with hunting season after we got back, but should have a few from that trip up in the near future, and also still have one more grouse video from here in Michigan to do!
Man am I jealous. I've spent 9 days hunting (with 2 wild bird experienced dogs) in AZ/NM the last two years and only seen 3 coveys. Sure is pretty down there in the winter either way.
Great Video and Commentary! Enjoyed this very much! I'm sure you guys had quite the adventure; wish I was young enough to do that sort of thing again! Is the land more to the Northern part of AZ., or Southern, if you don't mind me asking? Thanks much for sharing! ~Lou
Thanks Lou - glad you enjoyed the video! We had a great trip, it was definitely an adventure. We were hunting the southern portion of the state, but you can find Scalies and Gambels quail much throughout the entire state of AZ. The cover is seemingly endless.
It was sort of a last minute trip, we had been talking about going for a while, but I was never too serious about it until the time came. I actually quit my job two weeks prior so I could go. Life's crazy, birds and dogs are fun and the rest will sort itself out in time. Thanks for following along. Justin uses a Quail & Dove Caddy from Upland Gear. It's just a belt by itself, but he uses orange suspenders for more support.
Watched you video again and really appreciate your work. I hunt AZ often as i live in San Diego. I only limited on gambles one time. I hunt mainly in Yuma area. What was you locations "IF YOU DON'T MIND ME ASKING"!! Great job!
Biggest thing is just go out there and have fun with your dog. There will be times when you both make mistakes, it's not always perfect. But you will learn to work together as a team and get there, just have fun. Join a local bird or training club, watch good handlers handle their dogs and understand what makes a good dog and you'll be well on your way. Good luck out there and thanks for following along!
You guys should be running two dogs. Alot of old timers will tell you to shoot at the coveys that are running on the ground. Thats going to be your best luck for splitting them up. Gambels are my least fav quial to hunt
For sure, two dogs would be ideal. Normally we run of a brace of dogs when hunting. But on this trip we were planning on hunting for two weeks or more, and we were limited to our 5 dogs. So we decided to run one dog at a time so we didn’t burn out dogs too fast in rough country. We ran two or three dogs throughout the day and the other dogs got a day or two rest in before their next run. When we hunted mearns we did brace dogs up and run two at a time because we were focusing on larger areas, so those days burned up more dog power. That’s just how it worked out to get the most out of the dogs we had.
We use Lewis boots. This was our first time using them, but they took a lot of abuse and were in perfect condition still after 10 days of hunting on multiple dogs throughout the day.
@@UplanderLifestyle we went to Arizona for the first time this year and used lewis boots. Probably a issue on how we put them on but did you get any sore spot on your dogs paws from the boots?
No you don’t. I believe the shots look farther away because the size of the birds make them look farther. I just got back from spending a month hunting down there. Started with a modified and switched to an IC shortly after for the majority of the time.

I used to hunt that area thirty years ago when I lived in AZ. Pretty amazing that you guys can drive down from MI and find good spots like that.

Thanks Bruce! Glad you enjoyed the series and thanks for following along. We were hunting Southern AZ.
"Southern Arizona"... an area larger than most states :-)
Great vids as always. Now, to hunt there, you wearing snake boots?? Required??
No snakes this time of year, it's too cold at night. There is still a chance for a random and rare run in, but very unlikely for this time if year.
Can’t wait to start my adventures with my Brittany. Any tips I’m 17 with my first bird dog and it’s been challenging especially with a Brittany

Hey what vest are you guys wearing in the video ??
The Pyke Wingman Vest.
What dog boots do you use? Have you used them in crunchy snow?
Lewis boots. I have not used them in the snow.
What bird vest is Justin wearing?
Justin uses a Quail & Dove Caddy from Upland Gear. It's just a belt by itself, but he uses orange suspenders for more support.
What Guns gauge and loads are you using
12 & 20 Gauge shooting 7.5's and 6's
What kind of double do you shoot
Stoeger Uplander
What kind of shotgun do you use to hunt quail?
Sometimes a 12 gauge autoloader, and sometimes a 20 gauge side by side!

Muzzle discipline could be better. Newer hunters may watch and think it ok though not safe. Good videos though
Is that public land?
Yes, all public state and National land!
What kind of breed of dog is yeti?
He is a Brittany.
Is there any quail hunting in payson Arizona ?
Never hunted up that way. You should be able to find something.
Best is 15-20 miles south... :)
Very good area just need to get down below 3500 feet if you can

Real life and exaggerated go pro angles are two different things… thanks for the concern
You've obviously never hunted desert quail...
