  • The Viper MK3 in Elite Dangerous is a small, light combat ship with a focus on light combat and agility. These are my thoughts on this fantastic little ship.

In Elite Frontier the Viper Mk3 was the police ship that came out if you blasted the space stations, a fine combat ship and superior to the starter Eagle mk2, I will have to buy this for old times sake next time Im in Jameson.

As soon as I unlock engineering, i’m naming mine the Razorback.

I remember using a Viper for a very long time before moving to an Imperial Eagle, definitely a ship to like, the little wedge :)

It really is an excellent little ship. As for the Imperial Eagle, I'm rather partial to that one too - if feels like a fighter that's been amped up and it's brilliant for canyon running. Plus the medium hardpoint gives it an edge over the Eagle Mk2 as you can fit something with a bit more punch in it for combat.

This was my second ship after the sidewinder and I loved it!

Later, with engineers unlocked a Viper IV can make a formidable hull tank and can even work for PvP. They are both fun ships....

Don't get me wrong - the Viper MK4 is a good ship in its own right - I've used it for exploration, mats grinding and combat (currently rocking 2x pack hounds and beams IIRC) - plus I'm building an AX one at the moment because of how tanky the hull can be, whilst keeping a small hit profile - just as something a bit different from my go-to Chieftain.
But in terms of feel when piloting, the MK3 just feels tighter in every way - and once bitten by that bug, it's something I remember whenever I climb into the same cockpit but placed in a less agile ship.

Funny, I was just on a shopping splurge for the Black Friday sale, and wondered if I should get anything for the Viper. Maybe I will.

There's a good selection out there for the Viper if you're after new paint for it. Should be something for most tastes out there - if you take the plunge, let us know which one you went for

I can't believe how much like a tiny python this looks like at a glance. Never flown one though

What sort of loadout are you running on yours at the moment? I'm using efficient pulses and overcharged multis (with corrosive) at the moment, but it changes fairly often.
If you like small ships in Elite, I'll be working on something similar for the Eagle MK2 next 🙂

Loved the Viper II previously, definately not dissapointed by the Viper III. The Viper IV is ok but I agree, the IIi is fun!

The III is right up there as one of my favourites - one day I might revisit it properly as being the first review, there's a few bits on there that I think I missed. The IV is a chonky little ship, and not too bad for combat, but it's just lacking the fun factor that the III has when throwing it through a tight cap in an asteroid field or in a settlement.

Without engineering this is a stiff nightmare to fly in combat. Don't expect to defeat more than 1-2 easy targets. But it forces you to learn Pip-management, evasive flying and how to evaluate situations... an unengineered Vulture on the other hand is already very nimble, robust and deadly. Absolutely worth the upgrade!
