For me, the Chieftan is the short king of combat ships. It's small, agile and takes so much punishment you'd think it has a thing for it. Add on the fact that it's hardpoints are better than most other ships (even ones costing 5x and weighing 100x), there's almost nothing that packs the same overall package
Good video series you got there mate, keep it up!! Fell in love with the chief one ever since I've seen the pilots vid about it. Was the first ship that I engineered to 100%, haven't looked back since. I'm doing threat 8 assassinations with it with no troubles. I've also got a fully engineered fdl, but I still prefer prefer the chief, since it's a lot more durable against phasing weaponry . And yes, thargoids really don't like it. This ship alone has earned me 9bn credits in AX bonds since the war started. PS: create a dedicated fire group for the gauss canons , using 2 groups of 1 medium, 1 small gauss each and fire them alternatingly. Will keep you below 20% heat when firing with a heat sink active, meaning the thargoid should not hit you at all if you're using your laterals to dodge their attacks.
Thanks bud - I need to rework all the fire-groups on my Chief, so I'll bear that in mind - I'm working on the Challenger at the moment for the next vid, but given the inevitable comparisons to the Chief, I'll be back in there shortly to make some adjustments. It's crazy how much money the war is bringing in - just an couple of hours this evening in the Ge system pushed my credits back into a healthy place, and that's after buying a load of ships recently, plus a trip to Jameson's Memorial to stock up on internal components to go around. o7

@@gamingsnipsandbits Howdy! o7 I thought as much, i was really just going off the title, which led to my personal issue - Owning 2 Crusaders and having retrofitted one of them as a shieldless hull/armour tank for AX ops . If you have time, i'd love to hear what you think. I'm def going to buy one but not because of any comparisons i've made or seen but more because i haven't been using the fighter ANYWAY!!!
The Challenger can make do in AX combat, but generally the issue is that the shields on the Crusader aren't strong enough for it to work as a shield tank, and it loses considerable speed and maneuverability in comparison to the Chieftain as a tradeoff for being able to mount a fighter bay. The biggest drawback is that it's slow, which can't be overcome with clever flying skills, and this makes it a poor choice against Interceptors, which are quite fast for their size and firepower. Generally you want a ship with at least 500 m/s boost speed, and the Crusader fails this test. In addition it's not as tanky as the Chieftain and while with Gauss retains a similar DPS potential, overall there's not really any reason to bring one since the fighter is of limited use, if any, in AX combat, and the internal slots mean you're down on hull HP while also being slower and an easier target. The Challenger can be made to work; it offers similar or slightly better DPS while being a little bit slower and slightly more vulnerable to getting caught out due to slower max boost speed, but you can make it slightly tougher than the Chieftain as a meaningful tradeoff while still keeping a ~500 m/s boost speed. And its maneuverability is quite close to the Chieftain's as well, if you prefer a slightly tougher, less twitchy spacecraft. The other big con is that if you DO run a fighter for AX combat, the fighter can inadvertently enrage the swarm, it constantly dies, and it basically totally prevents playing with other CMDRs as fighters still cause lag spikes.
I outfitted a Chieftain for exploration just to make a stupid ship. It's an atrocious build and the AspX is so much better at it for less credits but it does feel like cheating to squeeze 55 Ly out of a combat vessel, even if it can't fight at all in that configuration.
The Chieftain is the only good ship in Elite Dangerous that comes close to design and concept fidelity to that of star citizen ships. Not only does it look real and believable, it also looks functional. Not like a plastic toy, like all the other ships.
