In today's episode of the Tinnitus Relief Podcast, Dr. Ben interviewed Josh Moates. Josh is a bass guitarist for a band that spent many years touring, and was often performing on big stages in front of large crowds of people. This October my sister and her husband went to a rock show, and I gave them some of my earplugs to use and reminded them of the importance of ear protection. They both know about what I go through with tinnitus, and how it impacts my life, and they both take it seriously, at least when I tell them about it. To my disappointment, right after they said goodbye and left for the show, I saw the earplugs I had just given them sitting on the coffee table. People really seem to think this isn't something that can happen to them, and it surprises me how even if they recognize how horrible it must be for others, how folks can still take the health of their hearing for granted. I wish I had someone in my life when I was younger to warn me of the dangers I was doing onto myself. Had the point been articulated to me about how terrible tinnitus is, I know I would have surely changed a lot of things within my life.

Thank you. Just realising I am not the only one with annoying tinnitus encourages me to cope and try to ignore it. I had a perforated eardrum in my 20's and was an audio typist for over 10 years. My dad had it and one son also. If hayfever and sinus problems strike the ringing often becomes louder. I have learned to live with it most of the time. Thank you.

I am 16 and has tinnitus.
It all started first with my brother. He told us that he's been hearing some shrill thingy constantly.
Which at that time we all just thought maybe he just used too much earphones. He uses earphones a lot like almost 24/7. Then after some time, my brother came to me and i was playing a game on the computer at that time, he asked can you hear that shrill thing in the background.
Me who was hearing headphones, I put them aside and listened very closely, and there I heard (just heard) a very low shrill tune in the background. I told him about it and he immediately went to our mom and told her that i was hearing it as well. Our mom said it's our imagination and then after some time we got to know that we were diagnosed with tinnitus.
After that, my brother tried everything he could to fix it, he couldn't sleep coz of the tinnitus. But i was there, my tinnitus was getting higher coz of the usage of headphones even after that (telling the mom day). But for some reason, whenever I went to sleep, I always forgot that i had tinnitus and just sleep casually. Until my mom and my brother asking how my tinnitus is, and i am like I don't remember I have tinnitus sometimes so i don't focus on it so please don't make me remember that i have tinnitus and let me sleep peacefully. Well sadly, now I always think about that incident before sleeping and it makes me remember, "man I have tinnitus but still I sleep so easily than my brother, I wish he could sleep like me." For me, I just sometimes don't focus on tinnitus, I know I can hear it, but it just feels like a blank sound, like the sound of something echoing in a deep deep well.
Maybe my brain has adapted to this stuff.
Well that's my story, I don't use headphones anymore but sometimes on very rarely occasions but really miss those days with the beat of a song in my ear with the headphones.
Btw I fell of a bicycle before all of this happening, could be the reason of it but who knows :p
I don't hate that I have tinnitus since it gave me a very huge profit which is my brother. It's like our bonds of brotherhood (than before) has strengthened more tightly. Since we are the only ones in our family who really understands what we've been going through.

I’m listening to this episode now. I got tinnitus (a metallic static sound ~8:30pm on Apr 8, 2020). Almost 3 yrs later, I’m adapting, still. My daily level is usually a 3 on a 1-5 scale (even as I type this). I agree with what Josh said that it doesn’t bother him when he’s outside. I don’t mind the tinnitus when I’m active, and we’re active thru out the year . . . day hiking, biking, long distance backpacking in spr-sum-fall; xc skiing, snow shoveling in the winter; and pickleball year round along with tai chi. Even around the house doing chores, the tinnitus doesn’t usually bother me. When I do mind it is sometimes, when I’m falling asleep, or on the iPad, I hear the crickets at the top of my head. I sometimes do qi gong (tapping) and count my slow deep breaths when I can’t fall asleep right away. These are ways I found that help me cope w tinnitus. It’s when I get dull headaches that I pray I don’t get a bout of vertigo (which I got 3x times in 2021 - one case severe, and two other times were much more mild) to which I attributed to dehydration. I’ll be 70 next May and have been fairly active my whole adult life. I’m being watchful as I approach this life stage of becoming a 70something. I’m accustomed to being healthy and mobile, and am very attuned to changes in my body especially in these pandemic years. I’m not on any meds and have worn glasses since 7th grade.

Hello to Dr Ben and to Josh Motes. My name is Brent and I’ve been a musician for 58 years (mostly acoustic guitar, mandolin, mandolin, mandola, bass, and fiddle). Played in acoustic format bands most of those years. Speaking to Josh right now. I just watched a couple of your TH-cam vids so I know what you are playing.
About 5 years ago my hearing started to slip in multiple ways: certainly tinnitus, hearing loss, disacousis - distorted hearing, hyperacousis - sensitivity to loud sounds, and cochlear hydrops pressure in my head. These are pretty much all of the symptoms of Menier’s disease but without dizziness or vertigo. Add it all up and I have several challenges in front of me. I still play music every day and am playing as well as I’ve ever played. I don’t play in large jams anymore because there is too much sound for me to comprehend. I do wear a custom 10 db plug even when I’m playing by myself at home.
About 3 years ago, I played with an electric rock band and I found that very hard to do because they were too loud. The leader of the band had been told for years that they were too loud so he asked me to get the sound level under control. I became a decibel nazi. I purchased 4 decibel meters (about the size of a cell phone). I attached 3 of the meters to mic stands and positioned them in front of the band. I set the display screen to flash when the band went over 87 decibels. Everyone in the band could see it. Yes - it worked for several weeks keeping the band usually under 90 db in a small bar. The customers liked it.
Now back to Josh. Do you have any idea what decibel range you guys are playing at? After watching your vids I’m guessing you’re in the ear bleeding range. You need to take this seriously. Way beyond tinnitus, hearing damage is a cumulative thing, it sneaks up on you and once the damage is done, there is no fixing it. This adrenaline rush super loud band that you are in, playing to adoring fans, will be long forgotten 20 - 30 years from now when your hearing is in the gutter. Trust me - Look at Peter Townsend for example.
One of the challenges I have found is to find other musicians with hearing issues to talk to and share stories and ideas. Most people don’t speak musician talk. You know what I’m talking about. Anyway - I’ve rambled enough for now. Best of luck to you. Brent

I saw an ENT Dr a few months ago, and I was counting the days until I saw him because I couldn't take the noise anymore. All my hopes were on him. He saw me, said there was nothing he could do for me , and that was that. I walked out of the office in a daze. I'm trying to cope with it, but I don't know what might happen in my future if I don't get help.

    • @BlackStarSymphony
      @BlackStarSymphony ปีที่แล้ว

Best thing you can do is to NOT focus on the future. Take everyday as a new one and don't think about tomorrow. That is what makes you spiral down. List the things you love doing and do them. Game, listen to music, go running, work, draw, do anything. Focus on those things and not the future. Let life happen to you and don't try to control it. Accept that this challenge was given to you because you can handle it. You are not alone, you are safe and you will be better.

Dr Dr Ben Thompson, my really best wish is that the scientists must be discovered and provide a medicine, who provide some relief to tinnitus sufferers to help calm down their tinnitus until found the cure. It is very sad to all tinnitus sufferers despite a science has been peack of its research and advanced knowledge but there are finding no cure till to date. It is a biggest challenge for scientists even they not developed a single remedy to provide some relief for tinnitus sufferers.
