“Tinnitus doesn’t get louder” that’s a very dangerous thing to say to someone. My tinnitus got louder on my right ear, turned out I had so much ear wax lodged in and was so thankful to have it removed and the tinnitus went back down to low.

OMG, Dr. Gans explanation of tinnitus being a benign body sensation is extremely HELPFUL! It makes it so much easier to understand and not be scared of. Mine is not “bothersome tinnitus” yet I’ve become more aware of it which made me worry and after hearing the discussion on this podcast I’m much less worried. I definitely have stress and a little hearing loss that my ENT doesn’t think needs hearing aids but I’m hopeful I can learn to “ignore” my tinnitus more so it doesn’t become bothersome. Thanks so much for your HELPFUL podcasts!

I've been watching videos online for about 4 months since my tinnitus started. This is the 1st video to exactly explain what has happened to me. 1st my audiogram has showed hearing loss above the 7000 hertz. 2nd her description of my personality was right on. I have always been a person who won't stop at a problem until I figure it out and fix it. And the 3rd part started after the election. For the past 2 years I've been glued to the news. Watching and getting more upset everyday. Then one evening the tinnitus started out of nowhere. Well I stopped watching the news and as others have said there's not much I can do to about what's going on anyway. So now I'm working on reducing my stress and hopefully the worst is over. Thanks for all the incredible knowledge.

Long story short. 40 + years with tinnitus. Never really bothersome at first. Noise trauma from loud band in 2006 sent me into 2 to 3 years of wearing hearing aid noise generators. I fully habituated for let's say 15 years (stopped wearing hearing aids). Had a 6 year old girl cup her hands over my ear while I wasn't looking and screamed as loud as she could directly into my bad left ear. This was about 3 months ago. I'm struggling to believe the comment that T doesn't get louder. I'm back to the hearing aids with sound generators and presently hoping for a re-habituation.

Did you listen to what she actually said? Words are powerful and have an impact on your experience. The noise you hear does not get louder or quieter, but your perception does. At least, that's how I understood it. The noise is always there, but when you are tired/ stressed etc, it feels louder. Also, if your hearing loss worsens, the perception of tinnitus gets more bothersome because the brain tries to compensate for the lack of hearing. I don't know how to explain this properly bc am not a native English speaker. Anyway, I loved this video; it made so much sense!

    • @ronaldlindeman6136

@@katireijonen I would disagree that the noise is always there, but we only hear it when (stressed/tired/not of the better mindset.) There are times when I don't hear anything from tinnitus. There are times during the day when it changes. I just don't agree with this person in the video. She is not explaining my experience.

Absolutely right! I've had it for 35 years with not one day of silence. It went from a barely perceptible hiss to a flock of a thousand birds circling above my head. I would actually picture these birds in my mind especially when I tried to fall asleep. I would pretend there were all these birds outside that were trying to keep me from sleeping. That was my coping mechanism. Then I got COVID 2 years ago and my tinnitus went to a level I would have never thought possible.
Before COVID I had tinnitus. After COVID I suffer every day from a medical condition for which there is no cure.

I haven’t finished the video yet, but I wanted to say thank you. I always had tinnitus, but in April of 2021 a good friend of mine had some health issues; tinnitus being a corollary. Anyhow, all of a sudden, my tinnitus, which I always knew was there, but paid no attention to it, exploded. It was terrible. I have minimal hearing loss. But, the funny thing is, the tinnitus actually elucidated some childhood trauma that I never investigated, and it sent me on a deep healing journey. I’m actually grateful for it! I’m learning a great deal from your video. Thank you so much!! You both are helping me. Sending love to you both and the community.

I have sensorineural hearing loss, went through enormous work related stress at least 9 months before tinnitus and yes I have that amazing personality. With all due respect I wasn’t feeling this. It all culminated to like “it’s all in your head” etc “you have hearing loss” I’m sure that’s for some, but not all like stated by the Psychologist. I have had tinnitus since I was a kid, I remember laying in my grandmas room hearing ringing in my ear thinking it’s a normal thing that everyone hears this so went along with my life loving it and forgetting it’s there unless it’s very quiet. Years later into my adult life now it’s louder. Yes, actually louder, because I found out I have been clenching in my sleep, due to stress and anxiety and developed TMJ with tension headaches. When I move my jaw or neck I can change the pitch and strength of the tinnitus. It’s been checked, hearing and all is fine. It’s from TMJ, with massages it is helping but need to train my jaw to stop clenching while sleeping. Now I ask, for someone like me is this all in my head and that’s it’s the same loudness as I was a kid, or is it all in my head and have an amazing personality? 😅 Should I stop the TMJ massages? I appreciate these videos, but I felt left out from this one. However, I loved her explanation of how it’s something the brain registers as serious but really isn’t as it’s honing into something benign like a lens.

❤ this was very helpful. The information was presented in a very thoughtful way. Thank you. And thank you for pointing out about how important our words are. So many people use the words, my tinnitus. The word "my" indicates ownership. My house, my dog, my job Etc. Our mind is always listening. You are claiming ownership when you use the word MY. Use more generic words, the tinnitus in my brain is loud today. Put some distance between the condition and how you feel about it. This goes for using the words, my diabetes, my cancer, my heart disease. It only takes a few seconds to rephrase what you're going to say to stop owning the condition. Give it back. I love the comparison to the paper tiger. I'm going to save this and listen to it when I am feeling stressed out about the perception of tinnitus. Thank you

But my fear and continuous super high anxiety from this high pitched noise and low humming in right ear and clogged feeling ears and sensitive to noises now.........all of it has caused me to react to this as a MAJOR threat to my future instead of accepting it!
I don't function same. Don't eat much. Only have one more week off work to use.
Gotta accept this soon. This "Paper Tiger" as she says.

I’m exactly the same and I’m right there with you. Last night I was sobbing and screaming in my bed. Today, I’m still depressed, but at least I haven’t cried *yet* (about to go to bed)
Going to play some white noise and draw on my iPad a little and hopefully this melatonin kicks in.
Sending you some of the positive energy I have to share today ✨

@@xxo5294 .... Omgosh!!!!!! Well listen here right now!!! It is about 3 months later and as I type the ringing is same of course bUT I'M BETTER!!!!! I've acclimated to it and I didn't think this was in any way possible! I still get quite irritated sometimes. Especially the second I turn off my car. Uughh. The worst.
I hope you are ok and PLEASE hang in there because I'm living proof you can live normal with this. I have severe Tinnitus and 3 different tones!
I went through hell in 1st month. Pure hell. I was so scared ...... I couldn't go to work or eat or do anything but curl up in a ball freaking out.
My nervous system went into fight or flight mode and damaged me and it took 2 months to recover from that.
Maybe you know but I will say again, you will be absolutely fine. You just end up living with it. It becomes a part of you and its crazy how your mind learns to tune it out as loud as it is. No way would I have believed that. It just took nothing more than time. Every day to the next. Plain old time.

So I did end up crying and my life is still miserable. Nothing will help this curse go away. I’m slowly accepting all we can do is get used to simply existing miserably (as opposed to living, I don’t feel like I’m living) or “habituate”, I guess is the candy coated way of saying it

This video's explanation of what tinnitus is and how to manage it was extremely helpful. When I told my doctor about it she said "oh no! You know there's no cure for that!. which scared me and the stress/anxiety set in. I have the 3 personality traits you mentioned. The knowledge I gained watching this have helped me manage my tinnitus.
