One time my co-worker asked me that. And i answered "my mother had miscarriage on both of what could've been my 2 young brothers. It was tough and she kept trying to have another sibling for me but her health condition made it impossible" and he regreted he ever asked me that. I hate nosy people.

Funny thing is only child doesn't automatically mean they were spoiled. I think that depends on the parents. If anything my parents had too much time to worry about every little thing I did and no other siblings to take the heat off. I actually probably got punished more because I had no one else to blame things on lol.

So true!! I was never spoiled. I feel like people only view us that way since we are the only ones getting things cause of no siblings, so it just looks like we have a lot. When in reality it is a normal amount of stuff, if not less for some people.

Almost all of these are true especially the "you're lucky to have 0 siblings" and "your parents probably spoil you right?" Those are definitely the most common ones for me. And here's the response to these:
I wasn't lucky. I would have loved a sibling. When I was little, I'd beg my parents to adopt one just so I'd have a playmate 24/7. Today, I still wish I had one.
When I was little, as in 2-6, I was with toys. Now not so much. I just get what I need and that's it
They assume your rich enough to get everything when that's not the case for some only children, some have to appreciate what they have while others are spoilt rotten.
Their not mental patients, just because you don't have siblings doesn't mean your insane.....

My brother and I, no matter how much we've ever fought (and hoo boy have we fought), could never lastingly dislike each other. We were raised with the mindset that it was us against the world, and intrinsically trust each other.
Then again, my parents are from the Bahamas and raised us with the village mentality, so maybe this is me not understanding the American mentality as much.
How is it that one's own blood can mean less than water, I've always wondered? And it's not just your parents and their siblings. I unfortunately know more families with siblings who actively dislike each other and don't talk at all, than siblings who are thick as theives, like my brother and myself. I don't get it.

I wished, begged and prayed for a sibling since I was maybe 4 years old and even now I still feel like I failed and should have begged more. Especially because my parents also regret it. I wouldn't say just because I'm a failure but that may also be one of the reasons.

I'm an only child and I really really do love being alone as an adult lol
I've dated many, many women. Six of these women I dated were only children, and one I was briefly married to. All six of them had problems with sharing and dividing tasks, believed their value was more than mine (without contributing), always had to get their way, would just do as they please and thought I had to bend backwards for them, and even had significant issues doing simple tasks. Half of them didn't have jobs or make money and still expected this! They expected me as the breadwinner to clean and cook for them, buy them gifts, and also give them a ton of attention while they contributed nothing. They literally could not see anything wrong with this.
In all the cases their parents literally did everything for them. Their parents didn't make them do chores or cook and clean or do anything else, and so they would expect their boyfriends to do this, even as they didn't have jobs! If you didn't agree with them then they didn't see any issues running over you to do what they want.
I grew up in a house with many siblings, and while we could run into issues like this, we had a general idea atleast of dividing and sharing. In defense of the only child, they tend to be ultra confident and pretty flexible. Just very limited social understanding of group dynamics and how to be equal in a relationship.
I am an only child only because I got rid of anyone else who dared ruin that 😈.

I’m an only child and I have to admit that I love it! I also admit that I do live up to some people’s expectations of only children, considering I’ve always had my parents’ love and attention and always got what I want (I’m not that greedy or demanding though, so it’s okay). I often wonder what life would have been like with a sibling but I’ve never felt a genuine need for (or even wanted) one as I have great friends, a large extended family and enjoy being on my own from time to time. And I have a great imagination as well.
