Being an only child definitely has its perks! For one, you're always comfortable around adults because you basically grow up surrounded by them. Because you didn't have siblings to lean on, you had to be friends with your parents friends. Also not having siblings means that your friends were like siblings to you, therefore they're pretty much like your family.

Being an only child is honestly great. All these are true. Your parents always focus on you and buy you almost everything you want. My only con is I can't blame shit on anyone and it gets lonely sometimes

being an only child has had a big impact on me. When I was younger I didn't feel it as much as i do now. When my cousins come round, i have the best time with them and treat them like siblings. But then after a while you remember that you're not their sibling, they have each other, and you have no one. I understand why people wish they were an only child and I get it as being an only child sounds great, but its not all that great. Yes you might get more things than others who have siblings, but having more stuff and a room to yourself is a massive price to pay for no siblings. Tbh, most days I think about how great having a younger sister would be, yes and annoying, but that younger sister would be worth so much more than having loads of things to yourself. Not having a sibling has had a massive impact on me mentally, every time someone asks me if i have any siblings, or talk about how great theirs are, i can feel tears prickling in my eyes because i want one so so badly, no one who has siblings from a young age can truly imagine what it is like, its like seeing everyone else have something you really want and need, but there's absolutely no way that you can ever get it. It just really sucks, you are alone, yes i have friends and parents etc but its not the same, its not any where near the same. Its as if everyone else around you has siblings and these amazing eternal bonds with them, and you're on the outside, you can be friends etc but youll never be as close or as important. For example, last weekend just my younger cousin came to visit for the weekend, we are very close, she is the closest thing i have to a sister and i love it and her, I don't feel alone when I'm around her, I feel so happy that i can play fight, mess around with and help her. But then she goes home to her other siblings, and sends pics of her and her sister, and I can't help but feel this massive surge of jealously and it j devastates me as i realise that I'm not her sister and i never will be, and ill never be as important or close to her as her older sister will be. I just wish for a sibling, I can't express how much i yearn for 1... if i had a sibling holidays would be so much better, and i would love being able to help her with homework or makeup or clothes etc. I just wish i had one... so badly. Any one relate? :(
Hey. I agree with everything you said. I wish I had a sibling so badly. My mom thinks i'm ungrateful for feeling this way, but I don't know how to accept the fact that I'll never ever have a chance at that kind of relationship. I feel lonely most of the time. Even my friends can't understand, because they have siblings to spend time with. It's difficult to cope with the fact that one day I'll be the only one left from my immediate family when my parents die. There will be nobody else who will remember what it was like to grow up in that environment. It's hard now, and it's going to be hard. I feel like people with siblings don't really understand this or they think we're overreacting. IDK, maybe we are, but I feel like a part of my life is missing and will forever be missing. I'm so glad someone else out there feels similarly.

Sometimes I feel sad because I don't have a brother to mess with or a sister to talk about boys. I never met my father, my mother works a lot and my grandma needs to rest more than before... But I know that being alone right now only makes my imagination go to the top to create my personal path for the future. It's okay, the tears will be long gone in a matter of a short time, I know. Yeah, because when you have siblings, especially older ones, if someone is messing with you have have someone to take your side. When you’re an only child you really just have to fend for yourself and either learn to protect yourself or hope for the best.

being the only child is not making you selfish, weird or lonely. It doesn't make you different from other kids with siblings. Its all about the way that your parents raise you.
Being an only child certainly has its perks. Not having to share anything, no fighting, having your own room, getting pretty much anything you want from your adult family...it’s awesome. Sadly, nothing comes without its cons. Being lonely is pretty common, and like a comment under here said, you can have friends and whatnot, but you’ll never be as important to someone as siblings are to each other. Also knowing that the future of the family rests in your hands can be pretty stressful.
Overall, I like being an only child, but knowing that I’m not going to be as important to people who have siblings really stings.

being an only child sucks. i hate when people say ‘you’re so lucky’ or ‘i wish i was an only child’ because you’ll never understand what it’s like or how it feels. it never really affected me when i was younger, but now i’m a teenager i can literally feel tears forming in my eyes whenever i see someone have a good relationship with a sibling. i find it so hard to accept that it’s something i don’t have, and never will. yes i have a room to myself, and i don’t have to share anything but possessions are nothing compared to people and relationships. and my parents are divorced, meaning the only other person in my household is my mum. it’s so mf lonely. and when my parents pass there’ll be no one to share that burden, i’ll be alone. i just want people to be grateful they have a sibling, or even someone who cares about them because i don’t even have a best friend or any cousins my age, making this harder. i would genuinely give anything to have an older sibling, and before y’all say ‘oh i don’t have a good relationship with my siblings’ or ‘omg i wish i was you’ just remember for an only child to hear that, it hurts.

Being an only child's the best. A lot of my friends with siblings often say I'm lucky to be one.
I think its better for parents to have just one child, less stressful for the family, I have a friend who has about six kids under one roof and they all don't listen, fight with each other, and constantly make messes, plus the world population needs damaged control.

#5 is honestly so true for me! i kind of never understood why my parents would say that i'm 'very good around adults' but now at 18 i can see that, especially in case of teachers, i'm basically never intimidated, always willing to start a conversation (even if it's controversial) and expect people to take me seriously (because people around me always did and do) and 'fight' for what i believe if needed, which most of my friends (who so happen to all have 1+ siblings) don't understand and would never do themselves. It just comes naturally (i'm an introvert so it's even weirder i do that).

My parents got divorced when I was really young. I was raised by my mom. My older sister was raised by my dad because she hated my mom blaming her for the split. So even though I have a sibling I was basically raised as a single child.
I don't know, I have 6 siblings and I'm OK with solitude. I even like it especially when my family gets overwhelming for me, so even if I'm left alone for a couple of days I actually enjoy the unusual peace.
From 1991-2008 I was an only child I do miss them days sometimes but I love being a big sister. Also this list is spot on on only child facts.

Honestly uptill now being an only child was great i mean i was happy with it, until pretty much just this week. I saw the bonds they have with each other and though one made the younger cry atleast once a day, you could see the love he had for him. I crave that although now, I dont want one this much younger then me. Hearing people say im lucky for being an only child makes me feel envious. No tablet or materialistic item could compare to that. I cant tell you how badly I had wished to be apart of that family. Im not really close with cousins but I wish I was???. They could possibly be one of the closest people I ever get in my life. Even my parents siblings make me feel envious they both had them. And the relationship they have with each other makes me crave it. Personally not just this week but I had never realized how important family was since 2020, and im grateful for that atleast. It just isn’t the same knowing you’ll never have someone like that, that can see you in your worst. Personally I would never whine to anyone else but my parents, and its true comfort levels with family is something else. I love being an only child. My parents got divorced when I was a little kid, my mum has full custody of me and I live with her and that's the reason I am an only child. Never heard from my biological dad again and I don't know if he is alive or dead and I don't care but I heard that he had a son with another woman, I don't know how many children he has now but they are not my siblings, anyone born from my mother's womb are my siblings no matter who the father is. My mom said she had always wanted to have many children but since she got divorced she couldn't.
I often tell her that I absolutely love being an only child and she is happy that I am happy.

The thing about being the middle child is they just adore your younger sibling, then you do things you used to do they thought were cute, but only at that time. But they don’t care anymore. And your oldest sibling you feel like you don’t see them anymore. Then the other middle child you feel like they get the most attention. The only place you can really go to for peace is a hug from your best friend.

According to a conversation I had with my 7th grade health class the only disadvantages of being an only child are having nobody at the ready to boss and blame.
I'm an only child with parents who are going through a divorce and I'm stuck living with the abusive one until I hit 18. I'm not saying I want a sibling who I can drag through all this, but fucking hell it's hard being alone through it all. I get being a kid with siblings isn't all sunshine and rainbows but some people act like being an only child is such a better deal because you get all that attention. It's not, or at least for me anyway. And having your parents expectations entirely on your shoulders, knowing that if you fuck it up there's no one else who can take control is a really shit feeling.
I'm grew up as an only child since 1995 in california L.A and it is the best ever thing to happen to you because I got all sorts of gifts on my birthday and christmas and never had compete with any siblings for my parents plus got a big house with 7 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms and a massive garden to go with it that I grew up in I'm 27 still living with my mom at the moment but I don't care me and my mom love it 😁👍🏻
I grew up with three brothers. We were 4 kids in 5 years, we did all together. But every of this points work for me. I always was more mature in talking to grown ups then kids, i know how to prepare my own food when I was six, made laundery and ironing when I was nine, didn't neet to share the important stuff, bc our relatives gave us mony on holidasy, so we needed do buy what we wanted, candy, sodas, devices, we all payed for it with own mony, so noone else took it.

I had an amazing childhood as an only child tbh but sometimes i wish i had a sibling, when i was a kid i grew up pretty much with my cousins so i wasn't alone, but when i was a pre-teen my mom and i moved to another city (i didn't grow up with a father also) and i didn't know anyone there and it's always been hard for me to make friends so i didn't really had anyone there and my mom worked long hours and she wasn't really much at home, i remember spending most of the time alone in my room, now that i'm older i made some friends so i'm ok now but that period was hard

This video outlines more of the stereotypical side of only children. Not everybody has the same childhood despite the good points made. I certaintly wasn't spoiled growing up in poverty. And with adults, I do feel more at home around them and will speak my mind, but growing up southern has left it's toll on treating them on my level.

I have three siblings, two older, one younger, I am also comfortable around adults. I had close friends as a child but I never saw them as a replacement for my siblings. Assuming that because someone is an only child that they must have a great imagination or that people with siblings don't have good imagination is just wrong, I still had my fair share of wild adventures by myself and with my siblings as a kid. I have also always been independent, I love being alone, my siblings never got in the way of some me time. And sharing was important for me as a child, I didn't mind sharing toys or candy as it helped me learn about the value of not always being selfish. But that just me, I guess.

You also you depending on the person also you lack social skills and relating to pears because like I just said I grew up with ppl 4x my age around. And the word sharing isn't in our vocab because we most of the time didn't have someone to share with.
