A tulou is a small fortress actually, they were built like this for defense and security purpose in old times. And there were similar buildings across China in ancient time
But fortresses are usually for kings or nobles. This is like a whole village. So it's like an ancient apartment complex. With shared club house facilities. A real bummer though, cuz you need to get out to poo.
@@Jumpoable no it's actually a fortresses, because hakka means guests, they are migranting from northern part of china mostly during the fall of song dinasty when the mongol invaded the capiltal. but they are not so welcome in the south, that's why they build fortresses like these to protect their community. you can see there's no window looking outside on the first and second floor.

Could this be a predecessor of the apartment house with a large courtyard? Certainly the idea of living this way as an entire village is a good way to survive together in tougher times. I would guess that the community as a village would pull together during times of adversity such as repairing building damage from storms, helping to look after each other’s young children while parents are busy, and helping each other when illness strikes.

Tulou is also known as the first ever apartment complex in history! And it was featured in the upcoming Mulan movie as her house though that was not historically correct LOL. Hakka people are known to be great politicians in history, eg Sun Yat Sen and Lee Kuan Yew. The term Hakka means guest people, so when they moved to the south in Guangdong and Fujian provinces few hundred years ago, they were seen as outsiders and was despised especially by Cantonese people. That was also one of the reason they designed and built their houses in such a way to protect their community. And it was said that Hakka women didn't bind their feet in ancient days.

Tulou is actually really of interest to the architecture community. From the beginning of the 20th century, the idea of creating a systematic utopian society based on modular assignment of living space has been brought forth by architects and theorists, notably Le Corbusier. The later social housing programs around the world all attempted to formulate this efficient and promising model. The social housing program in St. Louis is one in particular that has made an impact. But due to the inherit flaw of the system, the project soon turned into a breeding ground for criminal activities and was torn down. Prestigious architecture school today like the AA school of architecture and Harvard GSD are still researching the possibility of modular community (especially in coping with the exponential growth in population). So it is fascinating to see this idea being implemented in China a few hundred years ago.
Your video reminded me of the experience of being volunteer teacher in 南靖 primary school in summer vacation in my college. And I visited the 土楼 also. It’s very a unforgettable experience. Appreciate it!
This video brought back so many good memories! I stayed here (in the same tulou you stayed in) during a school trip 6 years or so ago! Nothing has changed! 😭💖
Blondie, this was my ancestors house/building. Thank you for introducing our Hakka culture. I'm in Toronto and we have THHA The Hakka Heritage Alliance
Superb video. A view from just. Good side, bad side, true side. Thanks for sharing this to the west. You and lots of friends are helping promoting the true China. Not like what the US press said.
It is both admirable and easily forgivable that Blondie took some “artistic license” for we Western viewers, to draw us in to the video. Otherwise we might have not taken the time to view this incredible world heritage site. But for those curious, The Ballad of Hua Mulan is actually set in the Northern Wei era (386-536). That is where her injured father was called upon to defend the Tuoba realm from Rouran (Hun) invaders. So yes, it’s Northern in origin. However, the point Blondie was making was that these people in the video live in what is essentially a fortress. To westerners like myself, whether accurate or not, mention Hua Mulan, and we’re sucked right in because we know the story because of the cartoon. Her play on words served a good poetic purpose and is something we westerners do all the time to get someone’s attention to a broader concept. It would be like when I visited the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan, and innocently commented to my friends, “Wow, the Pharaohs of Egypt really got around...” Not quite true, of course... and I knew it. But it opened up a discussion of common architecture and questions regarding humanity’s deep history which was my actual intent. It enabled a friend of mine who is of Mexican descent to punch me in the shoulder and correct me. He was grateful to me for the joke because usually he is shy and has difficulties opening the floor to historical things about his culture for fear that what he has to say might not be interesting. Shy people for some reason are often afraid of saying what they know, and need to be encouraged by creative means. 😉
There were several people who became the genesis of Mulan. 1. Yuenu. The Lady of Yue - one of the first known martial artists and became a posthumous goddess. 2. Northern Wei Dynasty. 3. Sui - to - Tang. Red-Sleeved Maiden, wife of Li Jing. (The movie could be set in this period, where in Fujian would be right) 4. other female heroines lost to history 5. the four above combined in the Ming Dynasty into a single character
Wow !! This is new to me .. I also always fascinated with China and their culture, and this is Tulou really blow my mind.. great video and thanks for sharing ...

I really admire how brave you are to travel alone and experience all these wonderful moments by yourself. I'm quite shy when it comes to meeting new people but I want to change that about myself. Could you possibly make a video about how you travel alone and still have fun?
TH-cam's algorithm suggested this vid to me (probably because I'm playing a billion hours of Romance of Three Kingdoms recently) but it's great that folks like you are actually out there making these. Sinophobia in the West is at an all time high so I think having a more positive "western" perspective on social media helps. :( Your Shanghai vid is great, really made me feel nostalgic with some of the older parts of the city still intact. Gave a sub for support.
These buildings sure look similar to missile silos, especially from the top. During the Nixon administration, the U.S. spotted these Tulou and were trying to figure out what they are. It would be nice to see these buildings but to stay there for a night is a different story.
This is fascinating!! I’ve heard about these buildings before but never seen the interiors until this video. Thank you! I’ve enjoyed all your videos so far.
Ajisen Ramen Warring period , somewhat correct . Its war from the local’s residents ,, ,, who don’t want the new refugees diaspora from northern china , living there . The new arrivals , called Hakka , just settled in the worst areas, With almost no fertile land , not much of flat land, and water Irrigation is non-existent , Yet the Hakka stayed , develop agriculture, dug water wells , create rudimentary irrigations systems , Becoming self sufficient, , And the local with envy, Will attack the Hakka settlers, to “reclaim”, their land , after its been developed. So the Hakka people , have to defend themselves, and what a better structure they build there . Small windows opening, located high from the ground , making intrusion difficult. And they also created their own martial arts systems , all just to protect themselves . I would know , I studied on this subject .

Because they don't have an East Asian Confucian-based communal culture to begin with. Plus the Hakka are just getting high on tea, not crack cocaine.
Your video reminded me of the experience of being volunteer teacher in 南靖 primary school in summer vacation in my college. And I visited the 土楼 also. It’s very a unforgettable experience. Appreciate it!
土枪 is kinda like a homemade musket for hunting.
This video brought back so many good memories! I stayed here (in the same tulou you stayed in) during a school trip 6 years or so ago! Nothing has changed! 😭💖
ohhh thats so cool!
so cool. what a wonderful experience.
“大鱼海棠”的场景也是取自土楼
Wow thank you.. I enjoy see you video
Being of Hakka descent it’s great to see the inside of a 土楼。Not sure about the lack of toilets 😂 though..
I've stayed in a traditional miao inn in xijiang village and now I want to stay in a tulou inn. Thanks for the great informative video!
So apple's new hq is inspired by this?

Good job blondie. Amazing house MULAN

和台湾客家人是否一样

Thank you so much for this video. I learn something new about my own culture.
Superb video. A view from just. Good side, bad side, true side. Thanks for sharing this to the west. You and lots of friends are helping promoting the true China. Not like what the US press said.
Thanks for Sharing the local culture, the architecture, the people & of course the food. Good work!!!
It would be like when I visited the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan, and innocently commented to my friends, “Wow, the Pharaohs of Egypt really got around...”
Not quite true, of course... and I knew it.
(The movie could be set in this period, where in Fujian would be right)
4. other female heroines
lost to history
5. the four above combined in the Ming Dynasty into a single character
Wow !! This is new to me .. I also always fascinated with China and their culture, and this is Tulou really blow my mind.. great video and thanks for sharing ...
Interesting... a 15th century Chinese apartment dwelling.
Yeah, rammed earth is very strong building material and can last for millennias.
Yes absolutely
Spot on. An apartment building with really good security.
Amazing video and insight Amy , well done on integrating into its culture and locals too! Incredible to know co-living as communities existed centuries ago and its making a come back with co working and co living as communities again. Being self sufficient is also coming back for pure nutrients and freshness from the ground and food source. Keep up the great work in your adventures !
I was confused when I saw the mulan trailer and they had the tulou since its from a different time period than the makeup mulan puts on.
wumao npc the clothing and makeup were wayyy off, looked too cheap
I really admire how brave you are to travel alone and experience all these wonderful moments by yourself. I'm quite shy when it comes to meeting new people but I want to change that about myself. Could you possibly make a video about how you travel alone and still have fun?
So love hearing Fujian people speaking Mandarin. Polite, soft and slow sometime.
Roger Yang Southern Mandarin has a softer tone..
I prefer them speaking Minnan.
Communities of the future in rural ancestral buildings. BRILLIANT!
Now that's what I call a really close-knit community.
Yes, I've seen a building like that.
I'm pretty sure I saw THAT building.
Good place to visit for a day or two.
Fact --- this ”tulou“ used to be stupidly considered as nuke silo by amelicunts.
X Z lol such hostility, they didn’t know. Wouldn’t blame them.

迪士尼亂帶節奏。北朝時期花木蘭居然會住在圓形土樓。
是的。不过电影本来就是讲故事。小细节就忽略不去计较了。不过随之而来的问题确实就是不明就里的人以为土楼就是木兰的老家。。

Thank you for this amazing video!! I have seen some photos of these buildings but not closeup video. Best regards!!
interestingly, this kind of buildinh was almost regarded as missile launcher by the US satellites during the 60s
Its must be a magical place during New Year with all the lights and people
These buildings sure look similar to missile silos, especially from the top. During the Nixon administration, the U.S. spotted these Tulou and were trying to figure out what they are. It would be nice to see these buildings but to stay there for a night is a different story.
very interesting story
I really enjoying your explaination, get it up miss.
Now I know where Apple get their building design from. So the Chinese are originally the more creative! Americans just copy it.
This is fascinating!! I’ve heard about these buildings before but never seen the interiors until this video. Thank you! I’ve enjoyed all your videos so far.
Looks like it was from the Warring period in China’s history.
Ajisen Ramen
Warring period , somewhat correct .
Its war from the local’s residents ,, ,,
who don’t want the new refugees diaspora from northern china , living there .
The new arrivals , called Hakka , just settled in the worst areas,
With almost no fertile land ,
not much of flat land, and
water Irrigation is non-existent ,
Yet the Hakka stayed , develop agriculture,
dug water wells ,
create rudimentary irrigations systems ,
Becoming self sufficient, ,
And the local with envy,
Will attack the Hakka settlers, to “reclaim”, their land , after its been developed.
So the Hakka people , have to defend themselves, and what a better structure they build there .
Small windows opening, located high from the ground , making intrusion difficult.
And they also created their own martial arts systems , all just to protect themselves .
I would know ,
I studied on this subject .
warring period as in the era mulan lived in?
lyhthegreat
History , History is replete with conflict ,
That is just Human traits , Weakness invite predators,
Hunger needs to be fed ,
Ambition create grandiose dreams ,
And Greed is one of the most destructive Motivator of humanity.
The whole history of Old china , & even the present china , and the entire humanity in this world , has blood , been spilled , soak, and dried .
Define “warring” ? ? ?
Since when in recorded history has there been no conflict and wars .
lyhthegreat
The Mullan story , is just one of those myth,
Just like Hollywood,
Almost everything is a myth and biased productions .
@@angelsan1982 "Warring Period" is just the actual term historians have used for this. Don't know why you had to write an essay about stuff people already know. It's like the Chinese junks - that's the real term for an actual design of Chinese ships. We're not saying it's garbage, that's the actual name! You need to stop taking things so literally
Thank you Amy for the nice introduction of Tulou(土楼). It's so interesting even for a Chinese like me. I've known this kind of construction since I was a middle school student, but actually this is my first time have a close look at it.
