What impresses me the most is that Princess M. gives you a comprehensive picture of its mythology, while still providing plenty of negative space for your imagination on to wander and wonder.

Absolutely agred! And I think this is one of the triumphs of well written worldbuilding - you get a sizeable chunk of the world, and that's enough for you to PROJECT. You have an idea of everything you didn't get to learn, and it's always bigger than what you managed to comprehend.
      Good stuff, right there :)

5:40 I think that flashbanged the vibe out of the video for an unnecessary second
AI slop may be fun to mess around with but it's not content and that was a perfect spot to show a cool historically accurate depiction or fanart or sm

Yeah, I apologise for that - at the time I was naively believing that Adobe was the only company that was sourcing their gen-AI ethically, as they claimed they were only using their rather big stock image database to train their AI. But of course that was a ruse aimed just at people like me. A few months down the line, this was allegedly (please don't sue me) proven to be a lie.
I should have known better, but I fell for the trap. I still think there's nothing wrong with the technology in a vaccuum, but at this point I feel there's not a single company using this in a way I consider ethical.
By the way, here's my latest views on AI: th-cam.com/users/postUgkxcRos6ZLAkN4pLeiJjQQH5OxaHErmLiLd
On the fanart front - that's another can of worms. I try to use it when I can, but getting permission and finding good stuff takes hours and hours. I should have kept scene that without imagery.

The works from Studio Ghibli greatly influence my writing as a TTRPG game master. Mainly the gentle way Miyazaki treats the world, even it's "darker" parts like death, which is perfectly shown in Princess Mononoke: The Shishigami bringing both life and death with every step and San healing her brothers but being covered in their blood are two of my favorite details about this movie.
    Beautiful video!

    • @JoriamRamos

I use D&D as a shell, to make it easier for my new players, and then I homebrew (and invent/break a lot of rules) a lot around it.
Though I am planning to try to search for/make a system specifically focused on this.

Have you watched Masayuki Miyaji's adaptation of The Deer King? The magic system in that has a certain Miyazaki feel to it, but they also try to have a science based explanation for a lot of the other mystical happenings. Kind of a fun mixture of realism and fantasy.

Everytime I listen to wind as it sweeps through the leaves of a tree,
making this wonderful rustling sound and
everytime I watch, as the wind sweeps through the leaves of a tree
    making them dance in trance,
    The way they shake,
ever since I watched Mononoke, I think of Myasakis depiction of the Kodama.

The way you describe it reminds me of a scene from Dan Simmons's Hyperion. The first encounter with the Shrike. There are many similarities to Miyazaki in terms of narrative tools. Instead of Kodama, Simmons uses the primitive Bikura people. The first time we "see" the Shrike is from far away. It is giant. It's shape is generally familiar but uncanny and weird at the same time. Wicked. And hell, as a reader you have no idea what is going on... But still, you are hooked.
At least I was. Gripping the book, flipping the pages, reading and catching my breath as if it was me who looked into the eyes of the monster.
So yeah, emotions lvl master ;)
The main difference between Princess Mononoke and Hyperion is though that the latter uses fear, not wonder. You still deal with the unknown, but boy... You wish you didn't know ;)
Great vid as always! Thanks for the analysis!

I feel like the common way of depicting magic in western stories is king of immature. I see it like a facination for a completely utopian power and control, separating us from the natural environment. That's not always the case of course but i don't buy the moral justifications some stories could bring over this. That's why i don't feel the "magic" at all in Miyazaki's films. It feels more grounded, subtule, spiritual and blended into the natural laws

A single image of AI data seems so tone def. I was jarred at how much respect you where giving this film only to be thrown out. with how disrespectful AI art is in the face of Miyazaki's respect of art I would hope you could tell that just by the nature of AI data collection and creation. please think twice and remember your entire video is chalked full of his film footage in the first place.

ah yes collecting data and using that knowledge base to create new things, the thing that every human does its entire life, is disrespectful. miyazaki should apologize to nature for the disrespect when he drew it.

@@schmecklin377 Data has nothing but contempt for what it references. In the eyes of corporations artists are a cost, a cost that can be cut. the red target that was painted on the faces of artists wasn't painted because they want us so badly to use their tool. it wants to cut us out. it's not a tool that we are supposed to evolve with and learn to use. we are the tool. The tool for corporations to use up and dispose of. The scorn data has for " new" is unfathomable. It's not making new it's killing new. For you I would start by listening to something by Steven Zapata on the subject. Then maybe something by Karla Ortiz.

Great video about my favourite movie. But I cannot get over you using political pronouns to describe the forest spirit .. Normal language says "It walks", not "they walk". This not only made me confused to which they you were talking about, but it unnecessarily brings a political charge associated with divisive identity politics and restructuring of society and language to fit 0.01% of the population. This directly divided us, right here, just as I was enjoying your well written thoughtful content.
