I'll make a video on this very topic. I find myself using simplex with privacy tones more than anything else because I use this between friends/family when on overlanding trips / hikes etc.... and don't want to hear chatter from random strangers
These are all pre programmed so really you just need a pair of these or something similar. Turn them to the same channel and start talking. You do need a gmrs license in the USA but it doesn’t require a test or anything TH-cam is a great resource to learn all about these radios.

Not too bad... edit one of the pre-programmed repeater channels that match your frequency and then just add the DCS tones.
can program with the Bluetooth device that plugs in?

Yes. In fact, I put codes on my channel 15 so I can talk with friends without outside interruptions. Works great.
