Adding privacy tones to simplex gmrs channels
มุมมอง 4366 หลายเดือนก่อน
Adding privacy tones to my baofeng GM-15 pro ht GMRS radio on a simplex channel ( no repeater ) While this does not prevent others from hearing you. It does prevent you from hearing other people when you want to have a conversation with just single radio or radios that are in your party.

My first ever video on this channel ! Filmed Jan 20th 2024 Proving that an old scanner from 1981 can still do a few things. This is a brief overview of the Radio Shack brand - Realistic , model pro-2008 scanner (also called a "police scanner" by some, even though it does far more than just that.)
Was handed down this exact model from my grandpa hope to pick up something on it
Really cool use case. Those camping power boxes are meant to be a swiss army knife of sorts so why not add lora!
Agreed
Thanks! Im in NZ. I just purchased two of the v3 units with the larger antenna. Cool to see you have exactly the same. Great vidz to get me going!
They are great fun. The bigger antenna should really help
Thanks for the well explained procedure about the initial setup of the Heltec V3. A quick tip for a better presentation from your screen, your mac has a built in screen recorder that you can record what you do on it and edit that video into your main camera video because you cant see much from the laptop screen from the main camera view. Most tablets can screen record too. Cheers!
Thanks for the tip!
Arizona I was able to get 10 miles max on these with the Abbree 771. You can program them using the Radioddity GM30 software. I also have the GM30's. They are sometimes a little cheaper. The antenna is different between the two but I believe they're the same otherwise. Both are great. Very durable and great feeling in the hand. I have many other radios but keep going to these.
Yeah they are good reliable little radios
I’m thinking of getting it
I love mine.
Thank you for clarifying..wasn't sure if both receive and transmit tone has to be set..thanks
What does it mean when it says, « +5 0ffset? ».
my gripe is with the dinky Antanea and the case. I would like to have this board with the bender case. i like the Antanae port in a way that i can slip it in my bag, bottle holder. I would spend the extra shedder for this.
Yeah I’m looking into some better case options as well.
I wish the FCC would make allowances for the General Mobile Radio Service. No. 1. To allow take the old wide band equipment and allow them to be used for GMRS. No. 2. Make some allowances for liking repeaters via VoIP.
Can you monitor or program emergency services into that radio?
Not in my area. Depends on what frequency they are using in yours. Most likely not though. I would get a scanner for that. Also one that does digital and not just analog
It can access chirp for programming ??
Yes
do you also have problems with the squelch button? Mine just drift away and the numbers goes from 1 to 8 endlessly
Squelch seems to work ok.
@@GravityRadio oh..,.. then do you know if there's a way to repair it?
Try cleaning the potentiometer first with deoxit or another cleaner. If that doesn’t work, desolder the original potentiometer and put a new one on. It is a fairly cheap component.
why do you have an antenna on top of it? I just have an antenna for the back of the scanner
You have the option of using the top antenna or an external on a coaxial. So it is nice to have that ability in this model
@@GravityRadio wow ok and where can i buy a top antenna
You can probably get something similar on eBay… mine came with it originally.
Nice video, thanks :)
I’m in south Aurora. Look for a node called. Ham. KC8HPS. nice video, I’m probably going to add another node and better antennas. Bryan
Just got mine haven’t tried programing it yet
Hope it worked well for ya. They are nice little radios.
Needs to have a link in the description. Been looking for a while for this same one on Amazon and still no luck haa.

@@GravityRadio Thank you, much appreciated and ordered.
@GravityRadio Thanks again, My kids were going wild as usual haaaa. I wasnt able to watch the full video until now and saw it's Amazon info lol. I have it on the way now, much appreciated.
I picked one of these up at a garage sale about 15 years ago and I've been using it everyday since. No battery backup is the only major complaint. It does hold the frequencies long enough to unplug it and walk it into another room and plug it back in.
Wow! Thanks for the easy and clear explanation. Have watched many videos about the radio, but none as clear and concise as yours.
Wow, thanks! Much appreciated
thanks for the video! just picked one up myself and found this video. any idea of how to find specific frequencies in a certain area? i wouldnt know where to start looking for the correct frequencies
Yeah you can google the name of your area with radio frequencies and you should see pages listing them out. Plus stuff like Gmrs frequencies are the same throughout the USA. Try those…
Thanks! Although im from the EU so its probbly a bit different…
Where do i even start? No radio knowledge, no experience. I have no clue what im doing.
These are all pre programmed so really you just need a pair of these or something similar. Turn them to the same channel and start talking. You do need a gmrs license in the USA but it doesn’t require a test or anything TH-cam is a great resource to learn all about these radios.
Hopping RX ? What is it and why can't I turn it on?
The hopping function is actually the frequency offset. When the offset is enabled, it adds 0.5MHz to the current frequency. For example, the current frequency is shown as 445.000, when the offset is enabled the actual background is running with 445.500 transmitting." Similar to a repeater
@@GravityRadio What do I need to do in order to activate it on my gm-15 ? Have you been able to activate it on yours?
@@GravityRadio Thanks, I understand now .
Hi !! Greetings from Argentina !!!!!!! How can I use two Baofeng BF-999 and two arduinos to transmit and receive data over-the-air ?? Thanks !!!!!
You can do something similar to what the rattle gram app will do on a phone, which is to do it in an analog fashion, where the sound is encoded and decoding on each end. Take a look at this app and maybe you can draw some inspiration from that for your Arduino. apps.apple.com/us/app/rattlegram/id1664526096
@@GravityRadio Yes, I know rattlegram, but it is not for arduino, i mean two handys and two arduinos, no smartphones
Was using Rattlegram as an example. You could convert the data to audible analog like a modem does, transmitting over the air then converting the audio back to data. Modulate / demodulate
@@GravityRadio Finally !!!!!!! I was waiting that answer !! So, I must buy two MT8870 right ? Data will be hexadecimal values (0 to F) and then decode in the other module, Am I right ?
I want one!
Interesting -- do you have a link to get the Cable you have hooked to the tablet??

Fun little devices
Good vid can you possibly share how to pick up local ems channels on this radio not sur if possible im brand new to this radio only 2 days in..wanted to give one to my father to use as a scanner..
This radio is more suited to talking with folks on GMRS bands. What you might want to try is a digital scanner for ems listening.
You rock man! 🤙 Thanks!
Thanks
Great video ! Raspberry Pi's are not only "for kids" ;-)
That's true!- ha
Have you figured out how to program a simplex with codes?
Yes. In fact, I put codes on my channel 15 so I can talk with friends without outside interruptions. Works great.
How?
I'll make a video on this very topic. I find myself using simplex with privacy tones more than anything else because I use this between friends/family when on overlanding trips / hikes etc.... and don't want to hear chatter from random strangers
Here ya go - Video on how to add them.... th-cam.com/video/hwn8FE4lO_I/w-d-xo.html
Bought a set and by far my best working Baofeng radio.
Is this the 8 watt one?
5 watts
Yea it's sold as the 8w (pro) but fars-o-meter shows 4.8w on High power...
Hi, I cannot find the program for my GM-15 pro
Try using the one from Radioddity for their GM-30. The same software works on both radios. radioddity.s3.amazonaws.com/Radioddity%20GM-30%20V1.05.exe
Does this radio recieve uhf/vhf frequencies
Yes - you can receive on VHF and UHF.
Frequency Range: TX1: 462.5625-462.7125MHz | TX2: 462.550-467.725MHz | RX: 136-174MHz, 400-480MHz
nice
can program with the Bluetooth device that plugs in?
Haven’t tried it. I’ve only used the wired one.
I love this radio I have it in green! And I was able to tx to a guy simplex 15 miles away no problem! This thing has awesome range and power!
Yeah they are pretty good radios

Sir i have decent elevation. how hard is it to throw a repeater up? many thanks and 73,KB3AUM
Not too bad... edit one of the pre-programmed repeater channels that match your frequency and then just add the DCS tones.
1-7 are 5 watts. 8-14 are .5w and 15-22 are back to 5w.
I love this radio I have it in green! And I was able to tx to a guy simplex 15 miles away no problem! This thing has awesome range and power!
My "go to" mod for these antenna connector types was to completely remove that socket and install a panel or bulkhead mount BNC connector. This worked out great for the top mounted types like the one in this video because you could attach a rubber duck handhely antenna and ge the same results without worry of breaking the telescopic.
Cool idea. I may have to do one like that.
Good luck on your new channel.
Thanks! Much appreciated
You should examine the electrolytic capacitors especially those in the power supply for leakage and bloating before powering old electronics like this up..
Good point. I plan to crack it open and have a look.
