Now I'm using a gentle hydrating cleanser. But I like hydrating toners. I use a green tea toner and sometimes a calming pha toner for extra exfoliation.
You don’t need a better toner you need to cleanse your face at least 60 secs. Most people fly through the cleansing process and don’t allow the cleanser to get deep into the pores to remove dirt and oil. Also, if you’re using makeup use an oil cleanser first to break up the makeup.
Hi Dr. Stephens. You are so right that we don't need a separate hyaluronic acid. I just checked my products, mostly Timeless and they all have hyaluronic acid in them. And as you said if you use a separate hyaluronic acid you have to put a moisturizer on top so all the hydration from your face doesn't end up in the atmosphere somewhere. I got on the whole sheet-mask-train at one point, then immediately got off when I saw it wasn't going anywhere. Most of them dry me out actually. I only use sheet masks with some other actives after I dermaroll. (And I do it correctly too! Sometimes when I see people doing their own dermarolling videos online, I just want to send help or something). Its only 1 brand of mask I use from Korea. It has royal jelly, beta glucans, arginine, ceramides, snail mucin and other basic things to nourish my skin. I feel like it helps soothe my irritation after dermarolling, the ingredients promote healing, and the mucin LOCKS everything in. I'll occasionally throw on a charcoal sheet mask or some bentonite/kaolin if I'm noticing my skin needs some refreshing beyond just washing my face.
Video is very helpful but I need more info on oily skin, reduction of pores and black heads. I've used sheet mask and they help pulled the impurities out from what my naked eye could see and brighten my skin up but I rather use a clay mask..

Skin care needs change as we (our bodies) change. As a teenager, young adult, toner was too strong for my skin. It broke my face out and ramped up my sebum production. But as a mature woman, I use a daily toner and it seems to have a calming effect on my skin. It looks smoother and plump. Just overall healthy. It’s alcohol free and has rose water in it. It’s the witch hazel brand that’s been around forever. It’s claim is hydration.

I can't stop sheet-masking - it's more about the mental effect for me. Also, if you buy the bulk sheet masks (i have one from hada labo that's 30 masks for a reasonable price in one package) - it's a reasonable splurge. I've also moved towards using Japanese lotions (aka toners) that are more for hydrating/treating/prepping and its made a big difference in how nice my skin feels
So glad i found your channel! Your voice is so beautiful I'd listen to you all day! Of course, I love your skin and trying to "bathroom mix". I'm dealing with hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation. I've learned from you how easy it is to treat hyperpigmentation, however with acne prone skin, its a battle. How do i treat light spots resulting from skin dermatitis? Salicylic acid to help cure the breakouts or mandellic acid to promote skin turnover. You mentioned salicylic doesnt play we with others. Before i didnt use sunscreen, now its my bestfriend. Please, please make a video on light marks! Benzoyl peroxide i think may be a solution for both acne and light marks but im scared to damage my skin more.

What other products/ingredients are you using with it? SN: I so appreciate the knowledge you share. I have dry, eczema prone skin too, so I can confidently take your advice 🤗. So many products and advice are for more oily and acne prone skin. You cover all skin types and that's why I love your channel.
Love your video's Dr Alexis ! Could you do a video on Fulvic Acid ? I have seen a couple products with this ingredient, but don't know enough about it to purchase. Thank you !
YES! Sheet masks are all the same and give effects for 2 hours until you go to bed and that's it. A couple of products from the Ordinary or something is much better spent $ (but not that hyaluronic acid which yes! was also bs!)
Today was a difficult work day. Generally, at the end of these types of days, I seek a form of home spa-self care(I.e., eye masks). Not only for the perceived benefits (which you clarified are superficial), but for an opportunity to simply close my eyes and relax. Based on feedback provided in this vlog, it appears I would be better off using my Eyeeco goggles (dry eye care) and calling it a day.
Please remember to take youtuber advice with a grain of salt. Not only do you benefit from the ingredients your masks deliver but the therapeutic benefits are priceless. Much cheaper and healthier than a phsychiatrist visit.
@@georgiagrace510 You are kind to reply. In my case, for eye health, using my Tranquileyes - Eyeeco goggles more frequently is a necessity ( remote work & grad student). However, because I have to heat the gel compresses before applying the goggles, I viewed it as a choir. This led to my inconsistent use. Now, I try to incorporate using them while enjoying an evening cup of Ashwaghanda ☕️ tea .
I think Skincare is personal, if you're using something that you're seeing benefit from, why should anyone tell you it's useless?! I've found The Ordinary products are the best, performing better than high end "luxury" products.

Are these products alright? I also am using toner alcohol free and moisturizer alcohol free then azelaic or the biretex then another moisturizer which is Olay regenerist and sunscreen,
I didn’t know people washed them off . I know people wash off their clay masks. I think she’s a little confused because that’s like saying serums don’t work because sheet masks are drenched in serums. That part didn’t make sense to me
Great advice. Even with a double cleanse I feel my skin is not totally free from the make up and sunscreen of the day. I am using a micellar water after the double cleanse to get rid of everything. Is there something else that I can be using to do that?
I will never stop wearing a sheet face mask,i use Jigott and Ekel face masks which are korean facemasks and i dont wash the essence and actually help me with my pimples so you need to find the good ones plus they are really cheap
@Dr Alexis Stephens, I just bought and start using Good molecules Niacinamide Brightening Toner based on your recommendations for hyperpigmentation. Now you don't suggest toner? I'm confused 😕
I think what she was trying to get at was that a toner for the purpose of further cleansing and PH balancing is pointless. Using toners/essences with ingredients that help with a condition, such as pigmentation, are helpful as they are more like watery serums. She uses them herself as an added treatment.
I’m thinking sent meant the traditional toners (witch hazel) not the ones that are designed to treat specific conditions like acne, hyperpigmentation, skin texture, etc.
A cheap and effective way to get rid of them is duct or masking tape. They both starve the wart of oxygen, causing them to suffocate and die off. When I was 10, I had two warts on my thumb. I was so embarrassed by them I covered them with bandaids but I couldn’t keep using them. So I opted for masking tape (MJ kept tape on his fingers so it wasn’t strange back in the day). One day I went to switch out my tape and the warts had died off and my thumb was healed. Never had issues with warts since and I am note 41.

I sweat ALOT at the gym and I would love to do more then to just wipe my sweat off with a tissue before I go home and take a shower :) or is it okay to just wipe the sweat off and then go straight home and take a shower and cleanse as I normally do?
Thank you so much Dr. Alexis for being so generous with your knowledge. I had a question, Im in a country where its very difficult to get most of these products you talk about. But I do have access to natural oils. What natural oil can I use as a moisturizer?
Thanks Dr Alexis. Based on video, the sequence is damp our face, put hyaluronic acid, and then finally put moisturizer to lock them in. Not sure if my understanding is correct...moisturizer is put last to lock who? the hyaluronic acid or the damp water on the face? Without the moisturizer, the hyaluronic acid itself not sufficient to lock the damp water ? Confused 😂

The serums in sheet masks are not to be rinsed off. Once you take the mask off, you massage the serum into your skin, & top it off with a moisturizer.

I never really understood toners. I hate to see dirt after I've used a cleanser. To me using toners to get the remaining dirt is pointless. Definitely need a better cleanser imo!
I'm a black girl and I suffer from hyperpigmentation.. I usually see a bit of dirt / dead skin on my cotton pad... I don't tone for that reason but I see that and I don't mind it, it happens more if I have a post breakout scar
Very true. There's an channel that I love but says to give between every step and I toned it down for my own routine. Seems pretty pointless and like it's wasting product by removing them when applied between products
@@HaloHighlightz if your saying apply the toner after every step you may be talking about labeautyologist , a creator that i love and i do that on the weekends as a treat. But i only use a hydrating toner and don't do it between applying active serums at the end of my routine.
I'm oily combo and tried all types of cleansers (mostly from cerave; foam, with salicylic acid, cream to foam). They cleansed my face airtight but I don't like how it dried my face afterwards.
I love how you address us as "my friends" 😊
Hi Dr. To me, who cut down the products I'm using to the bare minimum, that is a pain. And most days I don't even need a moisturizer which is great. My products give me the hydration I need. Thanks for a great video.
I'm glad you talked about hyaluronic acid...I didn't notice any different
there is another dermatologist on yt who says to tone after each step of skincare...smh..its all so confusing..I just want clear healthy skin (lol) ..thanks for breaking it down
I'm so glad I found this channel! Most of these routines I see have always seemed excessive, so glad to have science-based info behind my gut feeling. I've heard of essence usage in Korean beauty, when would be a good time to add it, pre or post moisturizer?
Essence is used before moisturizer.
Cleanser
Exfoliant
Toner
Essence
Serum
Moisturizer
Feel free to skip the toner and serum steps if you just wanna use essence and moisturizer. Hope this helps, good luck☺

Thanks everyone
@@goldengirl7125 it's toner and then exfoliant
Dr, your back, glad for another video
Thank you Dr Alexis, studying product INCI list thoroughly now. Thank you for the educational platform for skin of color.
Maybe u can share your skincare routine. We’d love to see it!
Thanks for making this video Dr. Stephens! It’s been so cool seeing your channel grow and the quality of your videos increase. Thanks for the information!
@@simplybri3608 I feel like tretinoin made my pores look bigger - how often do you use the tret vs salicylic acid?
Go see a dermatologist or get a facial
@@simplybri3608 Try drinking spearmint or peppermint tea everyday, twice if you can (morning and evening.) Studies have shown that it lowers the excess male hormones (androgens) that cause oily skin in women. It's helped me get my hormonal acne under control, after I messed it up with hormonal contraceptives. 👍
@@pragooutube That doesn't work, im a tea drinker and especially a mint drinker.. Oily skin is what it is oily and im okay with that because my skin is always hydrated but I need a moisturizer that works with my oily skin and Im tired of spending money trying to find out.. @@sheabutta5425 Been there too many times and the Derms I've consulted with wasn't helpful and I don't trust getting facials by anyone again after my skin was messed up.. I don't want to keep paying someone for something when I can do it myself.. A lot of the tools they use aren't effective but just for aesthetic... I just want to DIY and get rid of Blk heads at home..
Doc.
You are looking sooooo good! That skin! Wow! Goals! Can you post a safe regimen to address PIPA while breastfeeding? I’ve been struggling with this issue 😔
Appreciate all of your videos!
Xoxo
I love Vichy Mineral 89. I also use their thermal water.
Hi could you do a video on properly moisturizing body and what products/ingredients you recommend for POC
OMG you are so beautiful, this hair 💥 💥 thanks for the information
Dr Alexis, can you do a video on supplements to combat hair loss or hair thinning due to menopausal
I know she’s right BUT i still love my tonor’s and Sheet masks but my skincare is about the experience more than just the science. It’s only one time of day i just take care of me so I’m a lil extra lol. But it makes me feel good and my skin is looking gooooood so 🤷🏻♂️
I ❤ Hyaluronic Acid!! I dont have the rest. When i get facials every 2 weeks, she uses Circadia products & I see improvement in my skin. Thanks! Ill definitely take everything into consideration. Im gonna buy slme Vichy 4 sure!
Thanks :) I didn't know you were meant to put on hyaluronic acid serum on that way!
Dr. You never ever made a distinction as to how to apply or use hyaluronuc acid serum in the facial routine. Too many products are given which leads to complete confusion. Streamline everything please. Only three things wash, moisturizer and sunscreen. Listen to yourself and the audience. I think you offer a fantastic device to community but don’t suggest things then become irritated when folks don’t use appropriately. Thanks
@@phyllislen she explains at 1:26 how to you it.
I love my sheet mask, especially vitamin C. I did it after exfoliation.
The Ordinary products have transformed my skin!
Thank you for the info. Very informative. I don’t use toners or sheet masks. However I am guilty of using hylauronic acid. 💜
Dr. Alexis I love your hair 😻 When I visit FL I would like to stop by your office for DPN removal. Thank you for your content.
I love my toner when I cut it out I break out and get black heads on my nose. My skin looks better when I use it and that is my scientific proof!!!!
Thank you Dr. Alexis, you have helped me with my skin tremendously! Watching your channel The inky list products were mentioned Well they seem to work the best for me after decades of trying everything out there and floundering…thanks so much for your suggestions. I appreciate all of your hard work😋
Great video topic and presentation....New Subscriber here. From the lips of a Melanated dermatologist, is an easy sell for me. Thank you for providing your reason and alternative suggestion products. I look forward to going thru your older videos and the new ones yet to come.
Bless you, Dr. Alexis!
Giiiiirllllll! I am not putting down my Advanced Night Repair.
Hi Dr Stephens, how often should I use an essence if I need them. I have the keihls ferulic acid one
I use a toner, a good one, before a mask. A leave on moisturizing cream, or Charcoal.
I just got the Kiehl's essence, but don't feel like the 5 drops are enough on my full face lol. Will you please share how are you using it? Is it before moisturizing? What other products/ingredients are you using with it?
SN: I so appreciate the knowledge you share. I have dry, eczema prone skin too, so I can confidently take your advice 🤗. So many products and advice are for more oily and acne prone skin. You cover all skin types and that's why I love your channel.
Love your video's Dr Alexis ! Could you do a video on Fulvic Acid ? I have seen a couple products with this ingredient, but don't know enough about it to purchase. Thank you !
What about Lush masks? I just tried one and loved it
I have dry skin and I’ve been using the cerave hydrating cleanser however it doesn’t get rid of all the dirt on my face
YES! Sheet masks are all the same and give effects for 2 hours until you go to bed and that's it. A couple of products from the Ordinary or something is much better spent $ (but not that hyaluronic acid which yes! was also bs!)
Omg.. Your makeup here is perfect. Ur like a goddess
Thank you! Not going to replace my toner anymore then. I don’t regularly used sheet masks but i like to use one on the plane to not dry out?
What toner were you using and for what purpose?
Not the sheet masks and toners 😫. Thankfully I do have a good skincare regime and use CeraVe PM moisturiser.
😭😭😭😭😭😭
Thank you so much for this video! Learn something new, and save money every time you upload! Stay blessed.
I use a seperate nano hyaluronic acid serum and that stuff works on a deeper level.
PC has great toners, and the Inkey PHA is great.
Great video! Just waiting for you to announce that you’re coming out with your own skincare line ☺️

I disagree. I love the Ordinary hyaluronic acid . It makes my skin glow.
I think Skincare is personal, if you're using something that you're seeing benefit from, why should anyone tell you it's useless?! I've found The Ordinary products are the best, performing better than high end "luxury" products.
Love ordinary products ❤❤
I like essences... they feel good in the skin. How do you feel about spay essence before each step of the night time routine?
Works beautifully for me and is recommended by many.
My dermatologist told me to do these:
Day:
Glycemic soap
Acelaic acid
Sunscreen.
Night:
Glycemic soap
Biretex duo
I told him I have class concerns with my dark spots and he said these would go away naturally but recommended these products anyway. I have an acne prone skin. Are these products alright? I also am using toner alcohol free and moisturizer alcohol free then azelaic or the biretex then another moisturizer which is Olay regenerist and sunscreen,
I tried not to use toner but my skin felts extremely dry
You must to see the brand green keratin elmw serum i lived in France I used the Vichy now I use the green keratin elmw acid hyaluronic serum .
She is right, toners are a waste!!
Why would a person wash off the sheet mask thats would be equivalent to washing off your serum wouldnt it?
I didn’t know people washed them off . I know people wash off their clay masks. I think she’s a little confused because that’s like saying serums don’t work because sheet masks are drenched in serums. That part didn’t make sense to me
Great advice. Even with a double cleanse I feel my skin is not totally free from the make up and sunscreen of the day. I am using a micellar water after the double cleanse to get rid of everything. Is there something else that I can be using to do that?
I do the same thing
I was able to re-up on some hyaluronic acid... NO MORE! Will definitely save those coins as most are expensive!
Your skin looks amazing 👌💕💕
I was never a fan of toners cos everyone I have tried broke me out. I stopped using them years ago and my skin got a little better
Me too I am confused because I also bought that toner for hyperpigmentation
Me too, she contradicts herself way too much...unsubscribed I prefer Dr. Vanita Rattan anyway!
@@blobneon I think she meant that too but this definitely clear. Not one of her better videos.
I m a firm believer in a sheet mask 5 days a week😊 works for me
Wonderful channel!! O just found you - informational an inspirational! Thank you!!
Hi, thank you for the video. Kiehl’s Ferulic Brew Rejuvenating Facial Essence has fragrance in it. Can you please give another option? Thanks.
Please talk about warts on the hands and fingers.
I 💗 Your channel and I can’t seem to get rid of Hyperpigmentation on my face and under my eyes. My Dr. says it’s due to my HBP. What would you recommend for me?
Can you do a video on how to cleanse your face right after working out at the gym?!
Confused 😂
Doc what about the discoloration toner you recommended for pigmentation
as long as it has tranexamic acid u should be fine
My skin feels cleaner when I use this.
