  • Guide for exfoliating the skin safely by Dr Alexis Stephens.
In this video, we discuss how to choose the best acid for your skin.
    Cliff Notes:
Dull tired stressed skin, mature and aging skin - Resistant- Glycolic if Sensitive- PHA
Hyperpigmentation- Resistant and Mature skin- Lactic if Resistant and mostly concerned with dark spots not wrinkle but Sensitive- PHA
Dry Rough and bumpy Scaly skin (Keratosis Pilaris)- Glycolic Sensitive go with a very low % glycolic
Acne-Prone- Oily and sensitive- BHA wash off
Oily and Resistant BHA leave on…… Dry and Acne-prone- Mandelic
    Hope this was helpful guys!

    Naturium BHA Liquid Exfoliant 2%
    shop-links.co/...

There also enzymatic exfoliation but that can be a separate video and mechanical exfoliation that I only recommend doing in a professional setting
Increase risk of sun sensitivity so wear your sunscreen, protective balm on corners of eyes, nose and mouth to avoid irritation
Start low and go slow, avoid exfoliating and using strong actives at the same time, one day one night or alternate nights with the exception being products that are formulated together
Best time to use exfoliants is at night- cellular renewal happens best when we sleep, continuous self renewal is essential to skin health and maintenance during the day our skin is defense mood against all the environmental stressors we come in contact with think uv rays, blue light, pollution etc. and at night we need to help it repair
    How to use:
    First patch test
    Cleanse,
Put a protective barrier at the corners of the eyes, nose, mouth and eye cream (does not need to be specific eye cream)
Then apply exfoliant (leave for whatever amount of time directed
Through cleanse off double cleanse to make sure there are no hot spots that develop
Moisturize and oil if you like oils
Do not use with other actives alternate and use exfoliants on alternate nights
    1-2X weekly to avoid irritation
These do make you more sun-sensitive so SPF in the morning is a non-negotiable

I’m in my early 40’s* and I live and swear by salicylic acid. It cleared out the sebaceous filaments/blackheads that I struggled with as a teen and I think it does wonders for my pores. I’m also a fan of lactic acid and I even found this hand cleanser (not a soap) with a short inci list, that has an antibacterial effect as well as it has lactic acid. I bought one for me and one for my dad. It’s a hit! Even my dad says it’s not as drying as the usual Palmolive and Dove soaps.
I praise the lactic acid in it.
*I’m in my early 40’s and my skin is youthful looking, I know it and I also get to hear it from others quite often. And I’m a living example of that keeping out of the sun, avoid alcohol and live on a plant based diet and reaching for water as the favourite beverage is the best things that you can do for your skin.
Especially the staying out of the sun.

Hello, Dr. Stephens. I just watched your hyperpigmentation video last night. In that video, you recommended going with an enzyme based gentle exfoliant as opposed to a chemical exfoliant to avoid irritating your skin all together. You did, however, mention that lactid acid and mandelic acid especially were better than glycolic acid even in low percentages when the main issue you are trying to treat is hyperpigmentation. But I noticed that you did not mention anything about gentle enzyme exfoliants as an alternative to mandelic acid for people with sensitive skin in this video. With that being said, would you still recommend going with a gentle enzyme exfoliant cleaner over a mandelic acid exfoliant if you have sensitive normal skin and your main issue is hyperpigmentation?

I thank Dr. Stephens for that video you mentioned!!

    • @darrins3206
      @darrins3206 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@nuninuninu5095 - I recently bought mandelic acid + hyaluronic acid from The Original. It was only like $8 online. And it does work pretty good. Seems like in 1 or 2 days you can see some lightening of dark spots as the old dead skin cells are shed.
I'm using that with Nadinola fade cream (3% hydroquinone) and Cereve moisturizer and full spectrum sunscreen with cermamides and niacinimide (along with the Mario Badescu Enzyme Cleansing Gel). It's fading, but one or more of the products is breaking me out a little. It's a bit more complicated for Black men and dark spots because beard hair has a tendency to curl up and go back into the skin which causes trauma to the skin which causes melanin to rush to that area and creates dark spots. So you have to keep your beard area shaved all the time without irritating your face.

Thank you for clarifying that one can use a BHA product everyday if it's a wash off. I thought I may be doing something wrong by using a 2% salicylic acid face wash in the morning but I'm relieved to know that I'm not over-exfoliating. You are soft-spoken, concise and very helpful. I greatly value your advice.

Dr Alexis this has to be one of the best advice on using acids, thank you very much. Wonder if you can give a suggestion. I have mature aging skin that is 'balanced' bordering on combo skin I think as I don't have any dry or very oily patches, some small open pores. I have used some of the Ordinary actives incl 5% Lactic & 0.2% retinol without any issues. But I don't see any big changes. I am Asian with fair to medium skin tone. Very tempted to try glycolic which I understand is not always recommended for skin of colour. Thinking of upgrading to 10 % Lactic or Glycolic 7% toner or pixi glow tonic which is 5% glycolic. Would be grateful for your opinion or anyone else who is in a similar situation. Thanks 💕

I had a similar issue. I used a glycolic acid wash 10% and left it for 60 to 90 seconds every other day, a salicylic wash the rest of the time. Follow up with a vitamin C serum 20% or more, moisturizer and sunscreen. Once a week TO salicylic mask and 3 days later TO 10% lactic acid. If you like you can add the Niacinamide serum day and night as this will slowly lower the amount of oil in the Tzone. I just got the Cerave night lotion as that has Niacinamide already. I found that adding a moisturizer actually lowered my oiliness. Best of luck.
