Been on all day with my stihl ms 181 , pull , pull ,pull , tried spray start , sputtered , good spark , I had topped up petrol , air cfilter clean , was ready to give up take it to dealer , checked youtube yet again and came across piddler , tipped out all petrol and checked fuel filter , clean , put in fresh mix , started 3 rd pull , what a relief . Thanks so much .
Another simple thing to check if it won’t start/stay running. Pull the muffler off and check the spark arrester screen. If that’s plugged it won’t run right either.
Great video, very straightforward and accurate but I would definitely add "Did you flood it?" at the start of all this. I fix saws that are used by firefighters, so for those of you that consider it "abuse" of a good saw to do things like leave old gas in it, forget to clean the air filter or change the spark plug every so often, you would be traumatized if you could see what my babies have to go through. While I agree compression is a key element, it's not always a likely problem if the saw was running fine the last time you used it. Checking these three things (four if you just stick your thumb over the hole while you're checking spark) will tell you what's wrong with your saw most of the time... unless you're like me and you need additional items on the checklist like: - Did you clear the cylinder after Jackwaggin McGee flooded it with about 40 pulls? - Is the bar oil compartment full of gas? - Is the gas in the bar oil compartment unleaded, or diesel? - Is the gas in the fuel tank green? - Is the fuel line blocked because the filter body is mysteriously gone and debris is jammed on the end of the tube instead? - Did someone give the air filter a heavy handed "oil bathing" because they believe this is the type of system that needs that? - Did somebody have a grand ol' time turning all of the carburetor screws in every direction and give up when nothing did what they expected it to? P.S. ~ In case you're wondering, yes, all of these have true stories behind them.
Great video. My brother gave me his Stihl O44, because he could not pull start it. The compression was so strong that he could not pull it fast enough. It has a new spark plug, fresh fuel. I managed to get it to fire, but it would not continue to run and quit before I could get to the throttle control. When it runs it is a monster. the spark plug looks new and the air and fuel filters look good. it may be safer if I remove the bar and chain when attempting to start.
You were absolutely correct. Put the wrong gas in and all went to crap. Dumped it out and started over with the right gas. Third pull it was running. Thank You
Actually, it takes 4 things to run an engine. The one you forgot was compression. When you check for spark, put your thumb over the spark plug hole and pull the cord slowly. You'll be able to tell if you have compression.
I have a brand new Stihl I bought last year and used about 5 times for less than an hour each time that now won't start. I have to confess, it still has fuel from last fall in it. I'm gonna put fresh fuel in it first and go through each step until I get it started. It Will start! Thanks for sharing these tips with us!
god bless ive just brought a stilh 291 and i was haveing a promble geting it to start and when you said pull till you feel it resest thats when it will start thanks a million god bless
You did a great job. May I just make a small suggestion ? If you want to make clear it is necessary to change something, show what the old one did or didn't and what the new one does. It will make it easier to understand WHY it has to be done. God bless for this great video
Hi from UK My local Engineer whom I've known 15 years serviced my saw, put on new coil etc , I paid 200 dollars,.......still won't start, although he managed it when I took it back..........I now intend to do your 3 things , I don't wanna fall out with him, but at 72, I need a chainsaw to start quickly ..Thanks again.
Funny, in all my years trying to keep my saws running, never tried removing a spark plug with the Scrench. Always went digging for my spark plug sockets. Thanks.
Yes the scrench was designed for that but most guys do toss in a spot they think they can find it. Everyone tends to overtorque Like the gas and oil caps there are prob 1000 theories I think they vibrate theirselves tighter. IDK
Yes! Fresh gas mix! I'm lucky that both my weed eaters and all my chainsaws use 32:1. I mix 2 gal at a time in my small round metal can and use it until it's almost gone and dispose of the rest (usually about 8oz). Every time before pouring I stir it by swishing the can (two shooter marbles in the can). This has always worked for me to keep the mix consistent. Some plastic cans I've tried don't work for this because the marble plugs the spout when you pour.
Thank you! My beloved daddy passed away last November and I have his chain saw now and it won't run. Your video gives me hope that I'll get it running again soon.
Sounds like it's too rich and needs a carb adjustment! I have an episode to show how to actually tune a chainsaw! Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
The sound of the running chainsaw makes me want to play doom. Thanks for sharing. I'm going to check these 3 components out on my own non-running chainsaw (2 years sitting) and see if I can get it going again without a professional needing to work on it.

Good tips. I only bring 1 large fuel can to the gas station. It gets fuel stabiliser in it before I go. I then decant from that can for all my power equipment into smaller cans for mixed fuel.
Won't hurt a bit! Watch this episode where I discuss Ethanol th-cam.com/video/13ZV2Z1xeH4/w-d-xo.html Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
did the spark test. No spark. All connections looked good. Took apart the housing where the start / stop switch is. Totally filthy. There was no contact for the start switch. cleaned it and boom! Started. Happy Camper.
Storage condition. In addition to running all the fuel out don’t forget to loosen the chain a few turns. This saves your crankshaft seals during storage. I also pour out all the gas and add a few ounces of Stihl Moto Mix to the tank and let this gas cycle through the saw until it runs out. Then I put the saw in the full choke position and pull it until it fails to roll over. This gets the last bit of gas out of the system. I do leave the bar oil tank full of bar oil because they have been know to develop cracks if left without oil in them. I clean the oil tanks out with kerosene once a year as part of my regular pm program.
This video has got me super motivated to fix my saw, a Poulan Pro less than 1 year old and wouldn't stay running. Now after I messed with the H and L screws it won't even start. Maybe old gas? First thing I'm gong to try.

Great video Piddler, going to dig into my 026 now. It was running great then barely running and now won't turn over at all?? Any other ideas you might have?
You are spot on! Petrol industry should be shot for producing a fuel that will cause you headaches and unnecessary repairs! Great video! Covered the basics and the most common problems. Thumbs up.
If you have a marina near by, get your fuel there. Most marinas use non ethanol fuel so it wont rot the rubber fuel system parts.......oh and make sure the spark arrester is not plugged....
I always forget about TH-cam when Im balls deep in something that should be working. Of course I did exactly what I was taught not to which is use old gas. Which is why it probably wasn’t starting. Then I of course then I moved right on to the air filter pulled it and opened it up to blow it out. I Didn’t realize it came as 1 piece and could of bought a new one. I could only think I needed another person to pull the cord so I could use a paper clip to check spark between plug and wire. After cleaning the whole saw and insuring screws were tight I took it to the shop. I inherited that 028 WB from my dad and I had it rebuilt 4-5 years ago and it usually runs like champ. Your video was great I wish I would of checked it out sooner.
My moms weed Wacker wouldnt start,im positive she bought 87 octane and it sat all winter so 3 or 4 months in a gas can,i confirmed it,weedwack didnt start, dumped it and put my fresh saw mix, couple primer bulb presses and 3 pulls it fired..old gas is definitely a thing

That's a fair comment. I thought the same thing. I was watching the guy, not the ad stuff on the screen. Why not just show it now if it makes a significant difference in the point of this video. Anyway, odd snide reply, on his part. But good video.
I know this is really basic stuff, but showing the tool used and technique for gapping a spark plug woulda helped too. Been so long since I've had to do that, I thought it was a bunch of MALARKEY! :P
KISS never ever use ethanol fuel in a 2 stroke PERIOD 95% of your problems are already solved echo says if you use ethanol fuel the warranty is VOID and the 3 things you need is compression , spark and fuel great video keep on keepin on
Thanks for this video. I know the basics of engines but when I work on computers all day I forget. For sure if the gas is more than 30 days old or if you don't know how old is....USE FRESH GAS!
Love the info I’m working on my chainsaw s and I got them to run but the y won’t stay running lol I need a new Thank filter and new fuel line May god bless you with knowledge and wisdom my friend 😃👍👍👍
ANOTHER SOLUTION: For any other dolts out there...I worked for hours on mine, replaced the spark plug (despite getting sparks when testing my current one), changing the gas, etc. I finally started to bust in to the carburetor based on some other videos I saw to clean it up but noticed on the way after removing the air filter, that the little plastic hose that feeds gas to the engine behind the air filter had come undone, which is also why I saw excess gas collecting at the bottom of the chainsaw. Simply popped the hose back on to the little metal tube it is supposed to be attached to and voila! Hope this helps someone else.
Hey Mate, all the way from Australia. I watched your clip and cant wait to try what you have shown us as i have two chainsaws that will not run. Thanks from down under ( Australia)
There are three thing you need to getbabsawbrunning - compression, spark, fuel and in about that order. I do not disagree with what you said or did but compression is as much of an importance as the other two.
Forget ethanol fuel and most of your problems are gone. Sorry corn don't need you. Search online for the nearest non-eth seller. Boats and planes use non-eth not that hard to find. Ethanol is a scam folks.
@@AmericanPiddler We've even got a WallyMart in the area now with non-eth. I tested it with water and it had zero ethanol. The expensive test kits are a scam water is all you need.
Great video. I would like to mention that drop starting is not a safe practice nor is starting your chainsaw in an enclosed environment for obvious reasons.
i had a big stihl i could get my boot thru the handle opening and pin it to the ground and use both hands to pull the cord. it even had a decompression button to make pulling easier. if you didn't use that button, it would kick so hard it would almost pull your fingers off. now i have the one in the vid, opening is too small to put my shoe thru, and i drop pull it with no problems.
Help! Halfway through strimming the yard , my mcculloch b26 ps weed whacker just cut out. Assumed a flood so waited for it to clear and tried with new gas. No spark. Do plugs fail while in use or is it likely to need something more expensive?
Hey I’ve done the 3 things. The saw is verry hard to pull. I had the saw rebuilt last year in Seneca Missouri. What is going on with this like I don’t want to keep spending money on it.
Tom Jones in comments is right . Fuel with ethanol in it turns hygroscopic , meaning the fuel because of ethanol draws moisture from the air of it's surroundings . The water molecules are taken into the molecules of the fuel . The results are not good . Engine won't run right and sometimes not at all or won't idle or start . -------Ernest E. Johnson
Liked your video for how clearly you described 1 and 2, but why in the world would you go off camera to install the the fuel filter so no one knows where it connects and how it's installed. Let me know please. I'm curious..
If more people in this world spoke as clearly and at a decent speed , while explaining things like you it would be fantastic . I am a bartender so I need clear direction. Thanks dude .
Justin sure appreciate the kind words & for ya taking the time to leave me a message! I try my best to keep it as simple as possible sonata the end you've actually learned something new! Keep me posted on what your working on and maybe I can lend a hand if ya need it!
30 yrs ago I was a North West Coast Timber Feller we ran Stihl 075's and Husqvarna 100 super 6 1/2 hours a day 6 days a week. Stihl had NO manual chain oiler. Dogged into10 ft Sitka Spruce Snags broke a 404 chain in a week and Pooched a bar in less than a month. Husky = 6 weeks and 6 months respectively. If Husky wont start check type of fuel pickup. If fabric, toss it, replace with Stihl screen style. Running dry in a premix saw is not recommended. When your out of fuel your also out of lubrication. Use recommended oil with fuel stabilizer. At shut down hold throttle wide open while turning off, the excess fuel lubricates rings and cylinder. If run dry and stored dry, one may require new diaphragms that go hard if left long enough.. Insufficient compression is a silent and sudden culprit so check it B4 throwing parts at it. Recommend Premium non ethanol fuel. Shell V Power my go to but not from a blender pump if your anal like me. SAFE SAWING ALL!
You mean we not pose to take a hammer to it? Got to break mine down and see what her problem is. Almost sure the carb is plugged up. Been to lazy to mess with it..LOL Great tips buddy! Thanks for sharing these with us.
Hello I have a question I have done what you discussed in this video however he only way the chainsaw starts is by holding he throttle trigger l the way and it shuts off when you let go and try to make it idle
Start from the beginning th-cam.com/video/6hFKfT81yQA/w-d-xo.html Then try this again you may have a pin hole in a fuel line as well... thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
I took it into the stihi dealer more than once and still have the same problem. The dealer seems to be able start it every time I complain, yet the same starting problem happens when I get home. The gas is a month old and have tried replacing it without luck. Some of your other suggestions are worth trying for myself.
Amen on the fuel. Many a friend spent hours cranking boats , wheelers , etc n were too stubborn to accept simply their fuel was stale. Pull a sample n won’t light with a bic.
I tried the same, new plug, confirmed spark. New air filter, confirmed clean carburetor. New fuel, confirmed flow to cylinder. No ignition. I went back to an axe. It always starts. Shoulder hurts now.
Mark have you checked the muffler screen? Or have you checked the compression of your saw? And lastly have you tuned the saw? I have a how to actually tune a chainsaw video that may help.... hope this helps thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe!
American Piddler I think I’ve done all of that. Still nothing. It’s a poulan pro 18”. If I could buy a twenty inch electric cordless I would. I’ll buy a new Stihl next year, but every service costs as much as the poulan did. I hate two cycle engines. Never had one remain reliable after the second year.
@@markhansen4258 so what is that you are missing? Is it not getting spark? If it is getting spark have you tested the compression? If you have... what was it at? Give me as much detail as you can and I'll do my best to help you out get that saw running!
American Piddler I just checked it with my thumb. It’s pretty strong. Doubt that’s the issue. When I tore it down it was running, but wouldn’t idle. Two years and a bunch of decent cuts. Maybe I screwed up the coil, but that’s not worth replacing. I can buy another for $99. $65 for the coil.

That's a fair comment. I thought the same thing. I was watching the guy, not the ad stuff on the screen. Why not just show it now if it makes a significant difference in the point of this video. Anyway, odd snide reply, on his part. But good video.
Follow the link l to the video odd but I want you to watch more than one of my videos! Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling

Exactly! Thanks for watching and keep on piddling! #americanpiddler
Love the info I’m working on my chainsaw s and I got them to run but the y won’t stay running lol
I need a new Thank filter and new fuel line May god bless you with knowledge and wisdom my friend 😃👍👍👍

Yep I have also seen those hoses get little pin holes in them causing all kinds of trouble
Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
regular maintenance goes along way.i got a 55 rancher love the saw.take care
I too have a 455 it was on the workbench! I've had that saw about 8 years now trouble free!
But how did you change the fuel line and filter?
Make sure to subscribe and I'll cover it in a future video!
The episode is up! Chainsaw fuel line & filter replacement...

What do you think of the fuel that are already mixed like trufuel for the chainsaws
Nothing wrong with it! I'd prefer to mix my own because of the cost savings involved
Thank you for taking the time to reply
Couldn't have a great channel without viewers like you! Have a great week it's only Tuesday!
The gas is the most important. Cheers.
Ditto!
Yep, just be sure to use ethanol free gas. Also, fuel stabilizer I’ve found works fine to keep the gas fresh for months and months.
I got a craftsman chain saw that won't start... thanx so much for the video and the tips
Be sure and subscribe I should have another useful chainsaw video out this week!
Great video bro. Will take your advice for my Stihl chainsaw. Thanks
thanks for the video

Hey Mate, all the way from Australia. I watched your clip and cant wait to try what you have shown us as i have two chainsaws that will not run. Thanks from down under

Very cool buddy "Mate" lol thanks for watching don't forget to subscribe and Keep on Piddling!
There are three thing you need to getbabsawbrunning - compression, spark, fuel and in about that order. I do not disagree with what you said or did but compression is as much of an importance as the other two.
I was going to mention compression also. You can have the other three things but have weak compression. It isn't going to run.
Gary you are correct!
Thanks For The Simple Rule

Forget ethanol fuel and most of your problems are gone. Sorry corn don't need you. Search online for the nearest non-eth seller. Boats and planes use non-eth not that hard to find. Ethanol is a scam folks.
Tom you are correct ethanol is horrible for a two strokes! Thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe!
Tom Jones next
@@AmericanPiddler We've even got a WallyMart in the area now with non-eth. I tested it with water and it had zero ethanol. The expensive test kits are a scam water is all you need.
Best tutorial I have seen for this
Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
Great video. I would like to mention that drop starting is not a safe practice nor is starting your chainsaw in an enclosed environment for obvious reasons.
I have started my chainsaws that way for over 4 decades and it is still the best way... Period!
👊👊👊
i had a big stihl i could get my boot thru the handle opening and pin it to the ground and use both hands to pull the cord. it even had a decompression button to make pulling easier. if you didn't use that button, it would kick so hard it would almost pull your fingers off. now i have the one in the vid, opening is too small to put my shoe thru, and i drop pull it with no problems.
Thanks for watching and for your insight! Don't forget to subscribe and share!
Help!
Halfway through strimming the yard , my mcculloch b26 ps weed whacker just cut out.
Assumed a flood so waited for it to clear and tried with new gas.
No spark.
Do plugs fail while in use or is it likely to need something more expensive?
Very well could be the spark plug! Could also be a broken wire etc...
Well they do put SUCH. A bend on the HT lead when you attach and remove the the plug cap
Hey I’ve done the 3 things. The saw is verry hard to pull. I had the saw rebuilt last year in Seneca Missouri. What is going on with this like I don’t want to keep spending money on it.
Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
Why dont he answer the questions? This is again my same problem. .
Sounds like its burnt up 🤷🏼♂️ hope that helps...
Check the spark arrestor screen. I did alot of research. This is my only answer so far. Hope this helps. Let me know what happen??
thank you for sharing your pm video.

Johnson
Ernest you are absolutely correct sir! Thanks for the input and also watching! Don't forget to subscribe!
Liked your video for how clearly you described 1 and 2, but why in the world would you go off camera to install the the fuel filter so no one knows where it connects and how it's installed. Let me know please. I'm curious..
I did that so you'd watch another episode! It's in a different episode... Thanks for watching and keep on piddling! #americanpiddler
It's also the pinned comment you'll find the fuel filter replacement episode there!
Would have been nice to show replacing the filter and line, if he'd actually done it off camera, which he may not have.

I can only hope folks take the time to read this comment! So much knowledge & truth in one comment! Thanks for sharing & thanks for watching!

He's a pro and didn't know about these simple things???lol how can u run a saw for a living and not know about spark plug air filter and gas??
You mean we not pose to take a hammer to it? Got to break mine down and see what her problem is. Almost sure the carb is plugged up. Been to lazy to mess with it..LOL Great tips buddy! Thanks for sharing these with us.
CB The hammer technique is always an option when your piddling around like me but professionals look down upon it!
Hello I have a question I have done what you discussed in this video however he only way the chainsaw starts is by holding he throttle trigger l the way and it shuts off when you let go and try to make it idle
Start from the beginning th-cam.com/video/6hFKfT81yQA/w-d-xo.html
Then try this again you may have a pin hole in a fuel line as well... thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
I replaced all the fuel lines because they were cracked
@@alejandroroman9491 I'd say it's a tuning issue... check the compression as well
I can't believe you went through all that and didn't film replacing the fuel line and filter.
It's in a separate video!
Try my how to actually tune a chainsaw episode... Thanks for watching don't forget to subscribe and keep on piddling! #americanpiddler
The one thing I wanted to see was changing the fuel filter and fuel line. I guess you didn't think it was important.
th-cam.com/video/brtOQnVZym0/w-d-xo.html here you go thanks for watching!
Amen on the fuel. Many a friend spent hours cranking boats , wheelers , etc n were too stubborn to accept simply their fuel was stale. Pull a sample n won’t light with a bic.
Yes sir! Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
I have a how to actually tune a chainsaw video that may help.... hope this helps thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe!
th-cam.com/video/eA2jEGJCrZ4/w-d-xo.html
Thanks I know now I'll refer to it soon once I have a saw to tune up.
Thanks for watching and keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
1 more thing I forgot to mention , I recommend pre mix gas from True fuel or the STIHL brand.
Hey I’m thinking of either getting the stihl ms362 or the husqvarna 562xp what would you recommend??
I'd recommend the Echo 620PW is I was buying a 60cc saw... thanks for watching don't forget to subscribe and Keep on Piddling! #americanpiddler
