It really is one of the best pieces ever executed on the SNES. The fact that it's in an initial release title and is the best version of the song, easily eclipsing the arcade version, makes it that much better.

@@RM2011ish I remember when Contra III came out and I bought a copy, a high school friend of mine was commenting how the musical piece that plays after you beat Shadow Beast Kimkoh had to be heavily inspired by Aliens. Obviously, Contra has always had Alien and Aliens homages, but to have a derivative musical piece perfectly capture Aliens in a few bars, and have it sound amazing, was awesome.

@@darkerfalcon3747 it still represent a pretty steep difficulty spike compared ti the first 2 levels. Heck, even the Easter Stone level, and arguably the fire levels are easier than this.
My favorite piece of music from any video game, ever. When I got my SNES in 1991, Gradius III was one of three games that I got with it, and I distinctly recall endless replaying this level just to hear the music.
This piece is one of the crème de la crème of Konami's late 80s and early 90s prominence. They really did a few solids for Nintendo with games like Super Castlevania IV and Gradius III, and to bless the system with a lot of the best music it would ever produce in its first year is a thing to behold 3 decades later. Contra III, Axelay, Cybernator...there were some real musical gems produced by other developers on the SNES, but you have to think real hard to come up with a bad Konami soundtrack...even their worst is pretty damn good.
