@@DrewTooley Hi tx for this great video!! Me too have the same problem, I an only use or the monitor, or the focus wheel on my SonyA3III, monitor blackmagic video assist..
Hey! Absolutely LOVE this setup, any chance that you can throw up that pdf file that explains exactly how you set up the rig? Link doesn't seem to work even after signing up.
Well, it turns out DJI came up with a proper monitor mount (DJI Adjustable Monitor Mount for Ronin-S and Ronin-SC Gimbals ). I believe it only works with the DJI Duel Handle which I ordered both. The set-up gets the monitor dead nuts center, just where you wanted it.
What MCC cable are you using to connect the Sony to the Ronin S? I tried with the the MCC-C USB and it disables IBIS and HMDI to my external monitor so I could use the focus wheel and the monitor at the same time, it was just a blank display on the external monitor unless I unplugged the camera from the Ronin and then the video worked. From the forums I saw that DJI said the sony disables the HDMI out when it enters the PC connection mode used to control the focus with the focus wheel but from your video it looks like you have the monitor and camera plugged into the Ronin. So are you able to pull focus and view from external monitor?
with the sony a7iii I am able to use the zoom mode with the wheel while using the Focus 7 monitor. I use the MCC-C cable to sony multi-port Link(www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1436845-REG/dji_cp_rn_00000020_01_ronin_s_part_13_multi_camera.html/?ap=y&ap=y&smp=y&smp=y&lsft=BI%3A514&gclid=CjwKCAjw5vz2BRAtEiwAbcVIL8BetmtcOQwxzZn1BiKlvuSFXVbsZ8AZJKZt-9mez4baf3G9KyYltRoCQekQAvD_BwE) for the wheel and an HDMI mini to HDMI full for the screen. I do know when I shoot in 4K I lose the on-camera screen when recording. I haven't tried with the focus pull though.
@@alexiliotti9105 Sorry I didn't see this earlier. It used to come with the monitor and now they sell it separately. I linked it in the PDF if you are still looking for it. Again apologies on the delay.
Hello did you have a video feed from the camera to the monitor via HDMI when simultaneously connected the MCC-C cable to trigger start/stop recording? I have tested my A7iii connected to Atomos Ninja V set to 4K HDMI 24p only also connected to DJI Ronin-s MCC-C cable unfortunately i dont have a video feed to Ninja V.
Yes I was able to have this simultaneously working. I have tested with both the small HC monitor and ninja v. Might need to change your hdmi settings. On the Sony a7iii the screen on camera will shut off while recording 4K to external monitor. Happy to discuss further if needed. Dm on insta.
@@DrewTooley Thanks man! On my end I have a black screen on Ninja V when plugged in the MCC-C cable to A7iii but when I unplug the MCC-C cable the display on Ninja V start to comes back immediately. My HDMI settings is external recording only while the camera not recording internnally. The only I can do is to trigger start/stop recording via RSS-IR cable. By the way what is your IG account?
I'm having the same problem. I have read somewhere that buying that special DJI cable for sony cameras might fix the problem. Did you figure out a solution?
@@GHOSTYYY90 Yes the DJI MCC for Sony. I'm using the RSS IR cable as of now to trigger start and stop recording using the Ronin-S and it works well. Unfortunately no functionality for pull focus.
Hey Drew, I found your channel by searching for Ronin reviews and I have to say that I really enjoy your videos, I think that I've watched all your video so far. Keep up the good work... BTW you're better then Peter Mckinnon.
I have setup the Ronin exactly with your settings. However, if I want to get a good cinematic orbiting shot, what do i need to adjust? And which profile do I change? Right now, the current suggested settings do not provide a smooth 360 orbiting. This was a dope tut. Excellent job champ.
@@DrewTooley Hey Drew. No not the barrel roll. I’m talking about the 360 shot. Say you have a subject on a flat ground, I want to be able to pan around that subject in 360 degrees with a smooth rotation to the gimbal. Currently, your profile number 1 is awesome for quick action shots, but when I tried the orbiting, it was to robotic in its movements to follow. I hope that makes sense.
Absolutely. I am adjusting frequently as well. Part of the fun. I use profile 2 a lot and really like it. Don’t have to use the joy stick as much either.
@@juniorigorsozols9144 Hmmm have you played with the sensitivity settings? I will try and look into that. Typically if I am trying to get back to center quick, I double tap the trigger. I feel like I am constantly double tapping the trigger when filming between shots to get back to center quickly.
This was very functional. Hello my name is Sonja form the Netherlands. Do you have some films with you made in profile 1,2 and 3? How do you do the role? Thank you.
Hi Sonja and thank you for stopping by. This is the only film I have made on the Ronin S, but happy to try and help you out otherwise. Feel free to DM me on instagram with any questions if you would like and we can figure out some solutions.

When finishing music rolled in I thought you'll show some demo footage 😆 Anyway, nice showcase of how this could be setup. My concern is weight. 2kg bare cam, 1.8kg ronin itself, and at least 2kg or more the rest. So it's like holding 4 bottles of water on mostly straight hands lol. I've been using tiny dji osmo with phone, still after few hours it was annoying because of unusual stress on muscle.
what is the "technical name" for the part on which the camera is attached? by that I mean the intermediate part between the ronin and the monitor regards
@@DrewTooley thank you for your answer and your great work on youtube. I meant "the extension". So to say the "extension piece between the ring and the monitor", so that the distance to the controller is longer. Thanks for the .pdf! where can I find it? best regards
How is it that on your settings for your barrel roll, you have it set to customized, yet you are still able to do the roll? If I choose customized and click the roll motor is doesn't do the roll only the regular movement as if it was on my "cinematic" user profile. Also, how do you make it turn so fast! I have the same settings as you and it seems to be slow like usual!
Hey Jarred. Happy to help. Under User Profile 3 (M3) at the bottom click "control". Then under channels make sure CH1 is set to tilt, CH2 set to N/A and CH3 set to Roll. Let me know if this helps. If you need more I can explain in much more detail and we can walk through it on my instagram. Just shoot me a DM.

How do you control the focus with the dji focus ring while also using the external monitor for your a7iii? I have this setup (w an atomos monitor), and using the MCC-C cable and the hdmi cable at the same time turns off the monitor. Forums say it's a sony limitation that never got fixed.

ok i see you have the ronin s connected to the a7iii so you can control the record button etc. You also had the hdmi connected to the monitor. if one of these connections is out it will function normally for me, but if both are connected I'm no longer able to a picture( the menu might work but the video feed is gone) and the ability to press record on the ronin is now gone. i also did one setup where i had the ronin connected with a different port than( the one that looks like the ronin charger connection) in that case think i got the picture back but it the word function from the ronin still didn't work. Any suggestions have you had this issue, thoughts? Also like i said other than both being connected it works just fine
@@DrewTooley so i asked some forum and basically sony doesnt allow to output signals so i have to pick one or the other. I was hope or hoping that its an old function thtas been updated through firmware but from ronin thats what they seem to be saying thanks for replying though
Thats crazy. Not sure why because I don't seem to have a problem with using the record button on the Ronin S while using the external monitor. I am even able to use the zoom wheel in conjunction with it all. Maybe fixed through firmware.
Anyone else experience the Small Rig cheese late Clamp lose it's "grippy"-ness around the Ronin? Bought mine brand new, securely tightened it to the gimbal as directed, and while I was using it in a rather fast action scene, the circle plate itself wiggled lose and slipped up the gimbal...took it off to find that the small rubber grip stickers that are located within the inside of the clamp almost rub completely off. Anyone have the same issue or find a solution for this?
I had this same problem with my smallrig clamp when I first purchased. I repositioned and cranked it as hard as I could and haven't had any issues since. I am pretty hard on this rig too in rugged scenarios and it has held strong. Hope this helps.
Hey Joshua. I don’t have anything plugged into the tilt arm just ran along the tilt arm. The link in the description has a free pdf that I made after this vid to help explain the setup in more detail. Hope that helps
Hey Drew, great video, love your entertainig style of this video. But please, can you tell me, how you did your field monitor AND your focus wheel runnin'? When I connect my field monitor (Ninja Flame) and the USB-C cable for controll focus and rec stop and start on my sony alpha 7III the field monitor turn black. When I cut connection by USB-C cable, then it works. Sony issue? Thanks in advance and kind regards
Looking into some solutions for you too. Trying to see what the issue could be. Seems strange you have it working in M but not your preset. Seems like a Sony setting fault

Anybody else struggling with ronin s with Fuji xt3 on it? Even if I somehow get it leveled in all axis, every time at some point I do something wrong and it goes all apeshit and goes off. Like I need to learn to move properly, in only the right directions like learning to pilot a plane. Or is my Fuji xt3 just too heavy to begin with? My setup is purely a lens(xf35mm) and the camera body nothing else attached. Probably complex issue but any answer will help thanks all
Hmmmm that’s definitely not right. Have you calibrated the gimbal motors? And you are making sure to test balance (all axis reading “excellent”)? Are you using a lens support? All of these could help.
For the life of me I am having a hard time getting those "long" buttery ramps that don't have bumps in the middle. (from camera drifting, etc). I'm walking pretty well however. These ramps sometimes have "turns". Very slow and they should be smooth. Anyone have settings to do this well? you can see an example at 38 seconds.
You have it balanced correctly? I was trying to go back and see what you are speaking to at the 38 second mark. I couldn't see, but I did lean on the table which shook the gimbal if that is what you are referring to HA Happy to help more if you are still searching for answers and hope you found a solution.
Drew Tooley thanks drew. It’s the smooth glide I’m after. Very long and perfect. After much deliberation i decided on buying a ronin m with a ring. I think the s is too top heavy for this type of shooting
There are several different monitors out there that would work with this same setup. I chose the focus 7 from smallhd because of the brightness in the sun and I like the bigger size. Definitely cheaper options available to use. I do recommend smallhd.
I just got a used one today, Sept. 8, 2021, W. that I bought on Facebook Marketplace for $250 ($271 with tax, the seller did not charge me for shipping). It is practically new. I just hope that it works. It did not come with a manual. Is the dual grip and monitor really necessary?
That is an awesome deal. No need for a manual as there are tons of tutorials online. Also, to answer your question it’s a personal preference. I like the setup with dual grip and monitor because it gives me a lot of flexibility when shooting and i can also ensure I am getting a quality shot with the external monitor. Hard to see the camera screen when in underslung mode
Great video. The handles on the link.you have to order 2 separate times?looks like the link is only one handle per purchase?so 2 orders or it comes with set?
Thank you so much. Ya they are individual. I think some people only purchase one to mount on top of a cage or just to have a single handle on either side. I prefer the two. So yes you have to order two for this style of setup. Hope that helps and thanks for the support and comment.
hey i gave a question ,maybe you know that, i have ronin s, ninja v and small rig same like your setup, if i put the ninja v and ronin cabel on a camera togather, monitor is not working, only one cable supported in a one time, any suggestion ?

Perfect. That was my goal with this video. So glad to hear it was helpful and thank you for the comment and support. Stay well my friend and keep creating.
Don't know why my comment has been removed, maybe because of a link. The handles you have linked don't match the video, I've found the same / similar but they have a top screw that might get caught on the gimbal arm - am I right and how easy was it to remove the screws and put in your own?
Hey, can I please ask if you have IS stabilization turned on while mounted to this gimbal? I have Dual IS (both body and lens) on my Panasonic GH5 and was wondering if I can leave them on while on this gimbal for buttery-smooth footage or will this cause it to look unnatural?
I haven't had that issue when it is mounted sideways. Even when running around or riding on a one wheel it works well. Are you experiencing rattling? Everything tightened down?
The ones linked are the exact ones I used. I have a download PDF where you can get more info and details on the setup. Drewtooley.com/ronin-s-setup. Let me know if you have other questions after reviewing that. Happy to help
It’s a combination of things but first you need the small rig clamp then I used various screws and an extender off the clamp to attach a cold shoe mount. The monitor is attached to an arm that has the cold shoe to slide in from there. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have other questions
Assume you mean transport? Take handle/grip off and tripod grip and use a bag I have just for this setup. Although now I am using the rs2 with is much more compact

Great with no accessories too
Is the articulating clamp for the monitor included with the monitor? or is that a small rig part? thanks
@@jaysonhernandez6728 thanks for tihe quick reply. I hope the new cable will enable the focus pulling too.
Hey Drew, I found your channel by searching for Ronin reviews and I have to say that I really enjoy your videos, I think that I've watched all your video so far. Keep up the good work... BTW you're better then Peter Mckinnon.
Thank you so much for all the support and feedback. It truly means a lot and I appreciate the kind words. Hope you are staying safe and doing well.
I have setup the Ronin exactly with your settings. However, if I want to get a good cinematic orbiting shot, what do i need to adjust? And which profile do I change? Right now, the current suggested settings do not provide a smooth 360 orbiting.
This was a dope tut. Excellent job champ.
Thank you so much Adrian for the kind words. As for your question. Just so I am clear are you speaking about a barrel roll shot?
@@DrewTooley Hey Drew. No not the barrel roll. I’m talking about the 360 shot. Say you have a subject on a flat ground, I want to be able to pan around that subject in 360 degrees with a smooth rotation to the gimbal. Currently, your profile number 1 is awesome for quick action shots, but when I tried the orbiting, it was to robotic in its movements to follow. I hope that makes sense.
@@adrianmack7750 did you ever find the right settings for this? This is exactly what I’m looking for and can’t find lol
Thanks ! I'm still tweaking the settings of my Ronin S even after 1 year... I might try your profile 2 settings for my "smooth & slow" profile
Absolutely. I am adjusting frequently as well. Part of the fun. I use profile 2 a lot and really like it. Don’t have to use the joy stick as much either.
@@DrewTooley The profile 2 gives me an issue where the pan doesn't return back to middle :/ can't figure out where the issue lays
@@juniorigorsozols9144 Hmmm have you played with the sensitivity settings? I will try and look into that. Typically if I am trying to get back to center quick, I double tap the trigger. I feel like I am constantly double tapping the trigger when filming between shots to get back to center quickly.
Who in the actual f$@&k is disliking this video??? Who hurt you people?? Dude provides a high quality, FREE video showing off high his rig. COME ON.

@@DrewTooley Thanks, I will do that.

Thank you so much and so glad to hear the settings work for you. I love these settings as well. Appreciate the support and feedback
Hey man can you give more a more comprehensive list of parts needed to make that? Like what are the pieces called that make that monster hookup possible?
After speaking through instagram, I thought it would be easier to update the list in the description here in case others need a more detailed list. I believe this includes everything on the rig as far as accessories, cables, rubber bands and adaptors etc... DM on insta if you have further questions. Happy to run through it more in depth.
@@DrewTooley appreciate you!
Raincloud Productions Ya buddy. Let me know if you need anything else.
It is NOT a light setup haha.
The other things was that in the pdf mode 1 is all set to low but in your video is set to high
Hmmm I will double check that and appreciate the catch. Good looking out my friend
what is the "technical name" for the part on which the camera is attached?
by that I mean the intermediate part between the ronin and the monitor
regards
Hmm not sure I understand which piece you are referring to, but I made a free PDF with all the parts, setup and settings.
@@DrewTooley
thank you for your answer and your great work on youtube.

Is the focus wheel important? It didn’t come with the basic ronin s device.
What camera are you using? I personally don’t use very often but that’s because the cameras and lenses I am using have great auto-focus

Thank you so much Eric. It is heavier, but the weight can help with the stabilization. Let me know how it works out.
ok i see you have the ronin s connected to the a7iii so you can control the record button etc.
Hmmmm that is really strange. Are you shooting 4k? And which monitor are you using?
@@DrewTooley so i asked some forum and basically sony doesnt allow to output signals so i have to pick one or the other. I was hope or hoping that its an old function thtas been updated through firmware but from ronin thats what they seem to be saying
thanks for replying though
On your cord setup, it looks like something is plugged into the side of the tilt arm. Is there a piece that goes there?
When I cut connection by USB-C cable, then it works. Sony issue? Thanks in advance and kind regards
EDIT!!!: When I switch to "M" Mode on my Sony, i got the monitor runnin' but not in my custom "1" and "2" modes ....damn it!
Are your custom modes 4K?

Greg Pierce awwww yes that makes sense. All the best my friend. I have used the Ronin m a couple times and it is great.
Is this the only monitor you use with this setup or are there cheaper options available?
There are several different monitors out there that would work with this same setup. I chose the focus 7 from smallhd because of the brightness in the sun and I like the bigger size. Definitely cheaper options available to use. I do recommend smallhd.
awesome video man , awesome vibe
Really appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback. Hope you are well and thanks again for the support.
Does it work with under slung mode?
Yes works really well. Best part is the monitor swivels to adapt to underslung

Please share me the DJI Ronin s app
The app can be found on the App Store for your provider.
Had no idea there was going to be so much work going into this Ronin.... maybe i should just stick to my glidecam lol
HAHA work...more like fun. It was some work, but like putting together a puzzle. Glidecam is a good alternative and keep rockin it.
Still worth for today?
