  • You're out for a nice day on the water in your boat, when your engine won't start. Or maybe you ran out of gas or find yourself stuck on a sandbar. What do you do? BoatUS fishing and electronics editor Lenny Rudow shows you how to call for a boat tow, whether on freshwater or saltwater. He covers everything from the proper way to call, which channel to call on, how to call TowBoatUS, dropping anchor, and then what to do once your TowBoatUS captain arrives. If you happen to have BoatUS Towing Services, you can then sit back and relax, knowing that you are in good hands!

    For you guys who do the towing, do you find DSC to be useful? I'm shopping handhelds now and wondering if DSC on a handheld is worth the extra expense and trade off in battery life. It will be the only radio on the boat.

    • @boatus
      @boatus  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Matt. Great question! Absolutely get the DSC and make sure to program in your MMSI number (which, if you're a BoatUS Member, you can get for free at BoatUS.com/MMSI). Apart from all the other benefits of having a DSC radio, its greatest advantage is its ability to call for help with a simple push of a button.

    What about when the Coast Guard replies to the VHS-16 call to TowBoat US indicating they are not available? I had this situation a few years ago. The Coast Guard towed me to a State Park dock where I was left on my own. After some very significant angst and more damage to my engine, and a tow from a local good Samaritan , I got my boat to a marina. Lesson learned: Call TowBoat US by phone!!!

      Hello, thanks for your interest in BoatUS Membership! All TowBoatUS companies offer a minimum unlimited service area of 25 miles from their homeport. Many offer extended service areas to meet the needs of their local boating community. We recommend giving the local TowBoatUS port in your area a call to learn more specifics about their exact service area.

      Need a bit more info to answer that, fishin. Do you have a towing endorsement on a GEICO insurance policy? Or do you have insurance with another company? That would make your life super easy if that's the case! You certainly can call TowBoatUS 24/7, even if you're not a member. (Though ports may prioritize BoatUS members if they get a bunch of calls.) We have more than 300 ports across the U.S., so chances are we have at least one port near you. The easiest way to call for a tow is to download the BoatUS App (www.BoatUS.com/App), which has many useful features, even if you aren't a member. With the tap of your finger, we'll connect you to your closest tow captain and even automatically send your location. You can call our dispatch line 24/7 at 800-390-4869, contact the local port directly, OR you can hail TowBoatUS on Channel 16.

      You've got two ports nearby: TowBoatUS Manasquan Inlet and TowBoatUS Mantaloking (732) 899-6010 (both ports are owned by the same person). But you can always use the app or call the main dispatch number if you're farther afield. Fun fact: My family used to keep our boat in Mantaloking over the winter; Atlantic Highlands the rest of the year. I always hated the transit back north -- pounding 12 foot waves in March/April was not my idea of fun as a kid who suffered from "mal de mer." 🤢

    I've been a boater for 30 years and I've never needed a tow, despite owning old, used boats (BTW, I have broken down, twice, but I bring my tools and have managed to return - nevertheless, the following financial advice holds.) Boat US is like $160/yr - multiply by 30 years is $4800. By NOT purchasing a towing service you'll save many $1000's over your lifetime, even if you do get towed and it's like $1200. Use your heads people! In a real emergency the Coasties are always there - so DO own a VHF radio!

    • @boatus
      @boatus  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jeff. We appreciate your thoughts, but we'd argue this is false economy. Coast Guard generally doesn't tow if there isn't an emergency--they send it to BoatUS or a competitor. It's great that you're handy and have been lucky enough to have all the tools and parts necessary available to you to fix your boat when you've broken down on the water. But what if you don't have the skills, or run out of fuel, go soft aground, or your battery dies? We just got a note the other day from someone who was more than $3K out of pocket for a tow because she took a risk and didn't get a towing membership for her 39-foot sailboat. (She signed up immediately afterward.) For many folks of average means, even $1200 is tough to swallow. $160 a year is way more feasible, and it pays for itself, even if that's just in peace of mind.

    sorry but if you need to watch this video to learn anything they just talked about you should not be on a boat without someone more experienced directing you. Take a family member or friend on board who is more experienced until you get more experience. Too many boaters think its easy....and it can be at times until you are in a situation where experience is needed. thats my advice to new boaters.

    • @boatus
      @boatus  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Your point about having someone experienced with you on board is a valid one, pigskin. However, we tend to heed the saying that "experience is something you don't get until just after you need it." We hope boaters never find themselves in need of a tow, but unfortunately things happen when you least expect them. Hopefully those things don't happen very often, so we find that it's helpful to prepare less-experienced boaters for something that's generally more of a "when" than an "if."
