The penny was first issued by King Offa of Mercia (757-796) modeled on the Carolingian denarius. On one side of the coin was a portrait of the king, on the other - a cross. The diameter of the coin was first 17 mm, then 21 mm. From the time of Edgar the Peaceful (957-975) and Æthelred The foolish (979-1016) penny began to be minted in very large numbers. The coin was in circulation not only in England, but also far beyond its borders. The weight of the coin was 1.02-1.45 grams. From 1351, the penny ceased to be the only silver coin, as the groat (4 pence) appeared, and from 1504, the shilling (12 pence). In 1625, a gold coin of 240 pence was minted. The gold penny was issued in 1257 by Henry III.
In 1797, the first copper penny was issued. This coin weighed one ounce (28.3 g) and was 36 mm in diameter. The reverse depicted Britain, seated, holding a trident in her left hand, a shield with the Union flag in her right, with the sea behind her.
In 1806-1808, a copper penny with a weight of 18.9 g and a diameter of 34 mm was produced. In 1860, pennies began to be made of bronze. The new coin weighed 9.4 g and measured 30.8 mm. From 1860 to 1970, the parameters of the coin and the appearance of the reverse practically did not change.

Було цікаво.Теж,іноді,купую собі англійськи монети.Вам окрема подяка за фото памятника Британії зі львом,що зявився у відео.Тижні зо два тому купив монетовидну медаль History of Britain " Magna Carta 1215".На одній з сторін зображена,дуже круто,Британія з львом.Я гадав,що то така придумка митця-дизайнер,бо в такому ракурсі я на монетах не зустрічав.Але тепер,завдяки Вам,я знаю.що то є зображення з меморіалу у Плімуті на честь перемоги англійського флоту у 1588 року.
