"I try not to film people taking a leak". 😂 That's why I love this channel--its 100% genuine and in the moment. So much better than scripted tours and those un-narrated walk-arounds where you have no idea what you're looking at. Its like walking around town with a friend giving you a running commentary.

I had a Kiwi friend who lived on Rupert Street, a short walk from Piccadilly Circus. It was noisy with police sirens going off all night, there were prostitutes hanging around outside his door, and as an IT contractor who did quite well, I could not fathom his choice of living accommodation. He explained the attraction of Soho to me this way: where he is from - Wellington, NZ - nothing ever happens, it is as boring as a place can be, so being surrounded with all the night life was like a great heavenly adventure for him :)

    • @JackieBrown93
      @JackieBrown93 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +27

You know what? I get it, I used to live in a rough area that was about 10 minutes from the city centre. It was noisy, there was dodgy people about, people having loud parties every weekend etc I now live in a very quiet nice suburb and I sometimes weirdly miss where I used to live. Like nothing happens here, at all…not even police sirens 😂

New Zealand has it's own notorious areas. There is a certain comfort and safety in living amoungst the bustle and sirens. I lived in the dubious high density parts of South Auckland for years. You're never alone and the living is cheaper. The police sirens and red flashing lights are part of the ambience.

Ran into Pete Townshend in a quiet bar in Oxford a few years back. Didn't have any idea Who it was (!) at the time. I'm originally from California and he said he knew LA well, so we talked about that and told him I was heading for Scotland on the sleeper train that night and wanted a good place to eat and hang out. He told me he had spent a lot of time in Soho!! And he nicely told me about a restaurant above the French Pub on Dean Street. I no longer remember the name, but it was so lovely and even though by myself, they gave me a great table and I caught the train without knowing anything remarkable had happened. Thanks Hannah for this video about Soho and reminding me of a long ago day in London.

My mum worked in Old Bond Street in the 70's. We often walked (about a 10-15 minute walk) from her work to Berwick Street market. Once we'd crossed Regent Street into Soho she'd say, "hold my hand & look straight ahead! keep looking straight ahead!" 😂 I didn't quite understand then why. Then we'd walk, very quickly, with me being dragged along until we reached our destination. Soho in the 70's was seedy; red lights everywhere, brightly lit doorways with groups of men loitering around them, whole shop fronts covered with lots of pictures of naked/semi naked women on display, 'top shelf' bookshops. It was like another world from classy Bond Street! I remember Carnaby Street and going to Coffee Bars, and Patisseries, all of which seemed very grown up and sophisticated to me at the time. The area seems so tame and clean now in comparison.

I used to go to college in Charing Cross Road, and there’s never a dull moment in the area, particularly the strong wafts of Chinese food across the Soho air, the Purple Peep Shows, Raymond Revuebar etc. The area is fascinating and could spend many an hour soaking in the atmosphere and the sights and sounds. Yes I was thinking this. We would visit just to see it fifty years ago. We used to think of it as the home of Paul Raymond and Raymond's review bar and Fiona Richmond and later Mary Millington. We were so grateful for the entertainment they provided even though they were probably rarely in Greek St. They were pushing boundaries and Mary was trapped into addiction poor soul. The Windmill never closed! We would walk there from Leicester Square passing China town.

So sad in 02 when I was w/ kiddo at 2 , pushing in pram & pointing out mumma’s old haunts, remembering I was at one of the last Marquee Club gigs; the very RnR pub I knew the landlord & friends all worked at that has history going back to the Stones. Now some high street shop. It’s where Keith Richards asked Ronnie to join the Stones & in the 80s even crazier! Camden too still had some goth vibe and arts & culture left, truft leather stores, cheap unhealthy food stalls even cheaper in the last hour and wasn't gentrified yet.

I wish I was young enough to have lived in London in the 60's as Carnaby Street was the scene for fashion. It's where a lot of the rock stars such as the Beatles, Stones, Who, Jimi Hendrix got their fashion. King's Rd In Chelsea district was another hub for great hippie fashion. in the late 70's, a woman opened up the first 60's and 70's revival clothing store called Sherry's of London. She was on Carnaby for many years but recently moved her store to nearby Poland Street. It's an amazing place and I met her on my last trip and picked up a couple of shirts. I will be back again next year. The Algerian Coffee House you showed is a real gem of a store. It has an amazing aroma. You can get a great cup of coffee at a great price. I bought a half a pound of their medium Brazilian. Carnaby, Soho, and China Town are still good to visit though I probably would stay away during the late night and early mornings. I have seen it still quite busy around midnight and it makes for seeing some interesting characters let me tell you.

Great video @Hannah Ricketts ! Fond memories of Soho. First time my “big” brother took me there when I first went to London back in the rainy and gloomy Summer of ‘84. 5 days of dark June skies, IRA bombings but I fell in love with London and the seedy Soho with great record stores. Returned on Valentine’s day 88 with friends from school. Remember they went to Raymond’s Revue Bar (young men abroad huh?😄) £5 entrance, mandatory drink £50 😂🤣 which was a fortune back then.
In the 90’s I went to concerts at the Astoria on Wardour Street and went clubbing with my mates in the 90’s.
Took photos like the Oasis album sleeve of Morning Glory on Berwick Street. And no Oasis will NEVER REUNITE! And they shouldn’t. You can never relive the magic of Earls Court 1995!
Saw the area change over the decades,, but still love it. Sister Ray Records I still visit aswell as John Snow (my sons got me there as they liked that guy in game of Thrones with that name).
God, do I sound old now?

Love Saturdays (our time zone), it's Hannah time.
In the 60's and in my late teens Soho was a sleazy area with ladies of the night and druggys laying in doorways. I used to play interclub business ten pin bowling in Shaftsbury Avenue after work. We had to be careful at night getting to and from our games and no cellphones in those days, you had to be very much aware of your surroundings.

How cool these summer vlogs are 😎! I'm enjoying it a lot. Btw Hannah, you look beautiful in the video! Wow, no matter if the weather is good or not, or if a place is crazy busy and noisy or not, or even if you just finished work and is on your way home, because you're always thinking of us, just to make another lovely TH-cam video like this. Hannah, you're simply amazing!!! Thanks!!! Soho is really a very cool place to visit! Wishing you a wonderful friday! 🙂💂💐🦋🏵🌹🌻🌼🌷

Love your videos Hannah! Soho, I must admit is definitely my cup of tea (yuck smells aside!), I can just remember the tail end of the dodgy “puppet shop” days but it’s becoming much more gentrified now and is still home to some seriously cool coffee shops and there are still some quiet bits that are great to sit in and have your lunch in (Ching Court is amazing!) - sadly the summer is coming to an end but we’ve still got a couple of weeks of warmth left

Hannah, another cracking video. While I was in school my part time job was with CHAUSSURES RAVEL 1970’s. I worked on Carnaby Street and in Soho for about 6 weeks one summer for them. I know what you mean, the smell, the sites, the whole atmosphere. Thanks for the memories. Have a good Fall break. 🇨🇦

Friends introduced us to L'Escargot French Restaurant this past June, just a couple of blocks from Soho Square. At 48 Greek Street. It is the oldest French Restaurant in London. Food is very nice, and the lunch and early dinner prix fixe menu is quite reasonable (25GPB for 2 courses. 30GBP for 3 courses).

And now you must prepare your dinner after all of that walking and vlogging. Hannah, I very much appreciate the effort and amazing talent you put into these videos. Thank you so much Hannah, for this fascinating and often hilarious take on Soho. It really does feel like we are right there with you. I remembered watching, on TH-cam, Jeff Beck in concert, at Ronnie Scott's as you passed by. I had attended a concert by he and Stanley Clarke at the Budokan years ago. Soho may be gradually, as they say becoming gentrified again? Might be a little on the noisy side to take up residence.(lol!) Hampstead is really nice. The sky is a beautiful, clean azure this day. Are you California dreaming?👍💕💌

Well done on giving a sanitised view of what Soho is like. I haven't been down there for years, but back in the day, there were some nice restaurants on the way to Charing Cross Road. It's way too congested to be a nice place to live with the late-night crowds.

Thanks for the video Ms. H; TKTS used to be good value in the day but in general, West End is still cheaper than seeing the same show anywhere else in the world .. .. And, you can't beat the concentration of stage shows in one area .. ..
The TROC; In the day, they had a top-rate arcade that I may have patronised in days past .. .. May have .. ..

I think Soho is an area you visit or work not really an area to live. When I went to London in the 1980's you passed through going somewhere else, rather than visiting.
I feel still has a way to go before being compared to the more affulent areas surrounding it.
Stay safe, have fun, see you in your vlog on Friday next week. Steve

Back in the day Hannah Soho was the place to hang out because of the number of clubs or Discos around.it was a really happening place.I suppose it still is but I find it more bomogised and touristy now but that's just me It still has that bohemian aura about it but I don't think I could live there.
