The Austrian Schilling is the former monetary unit of Austria, which was in circulation between 1925 and 2001, after which it was replaced by the Euro. Divided by 100 money.
"Shilling" is the Germanized name of a gold coin of the early Middle Ages. From the time of the resettlement of the peoples and until the middle of the 8th century, the Germans called the Byzantine gold solid (or aureus) a shilling. Later, the coins of a number of other European states began to be called shillings. Before the schilling, the Austro-Hungarian krone was in circulation in the territory of the Austrian Republic, the currency of Austria-Hungary, which was greatly devalued during the First World War. The introduction of the new currency was specifically provided for by the Shilling Act of December 20, 1924. According to this Act, from March 1, 1925, a new currency, the shilling, was introduced in the country, which was equal to 10 thousand old Austro-Hungarian crowns.
After the "Anschluss" of Austria by the Third Reich in March 1938, the Reichsmark was in circulation in parallel with the Schilling, with a fixed exchange rate between them: 1.5 Schillings for 1 Reichsmark. After the Second World War, on November 30, 1945, new shillings were presented to the Allied military command - paper banknotes with denominations from 50 shillings to 100 shillings, all printed in 1944. Reichsmarks were exchanged for new schillings on a 1:1 basis, but with a limit of 150 schillings per person. The Austrian National Bank also began issuing schilling notes in 1945, and the first coins were issued in 1946.
