  • CLASS 11 -S-BLOCK
    TOPIC : COMPOUNDS OF SODIUM
What is the chemical formula of:
    (A) Washing soda
    Na2CO3.10H2O
    (b) Baking soda
    NaHCO3
    (c) Soda lime
    NaOH + CaO
    What is solvay ammonia process?
The Solvay process or ammonia process is the major industrial process for the production of sodium carbonate.
Why K2CO3 can not be prepared by Solvay ammonia process?
It may be mentioned here that Solvay process cannot be extended to the manufacture of potassium carbonate because potassium hydrogencarbonate is too soluble to be precipitated.
What happens when Na2CO3.10H2O is heated?
On heating below 373K, it loses 9 molecules of water of crystallisation to form monohydrate (Na2CO3. H2O). On heating above 373K, the monohydrate changes to an anhydrous white powder called soda ash but does not decompose further.
What are the important uses of sodium carbonate?
    Uses:
It is used in water softening, laundering and cleaning.
(ii) It is used in the manufacture of glass, soap, borax and caustic soda.
(iii) It is used in paper, paints and textile industries.
(iv) It is an important laboratory reagent both in qualitative and quantitative analysis
Why common salt becomes wet when kept open during rainy seasons?
Calcium chloride and Magnesium chloride present as impurities in common salt.
CaCl2 & MgCl2 are deliquescent (absorb moisture easily from the atmosphere)
Explain Castner-Kellner method for NaOH synthesis?
Method of prepration of sodium hydroxide
It is generally prepared by electrolysis of sodium chloride in Castner-kellner cell. A brine solution is electrolyzed using mercury cathode and carbon anode. Sodium metal, discharged at the cathode, combine with mercury to form sodium amalgam. Cl gas is evolved at the cathodE.
What are the important uses of NaOH.
Manufacturers may use sodium hydroxide to produce soaps, rayon, paper, products that explode, dyes, and petroleum products. Other tasks that may use sodium hydroxide include processing cotton fabric, metal cleaning and processing, oxide coating, electroplating, and electrolytic extraction.
Write the method of preparation of NaHCO3?
Saturating a solution of sodium carbonate with carbon dioxide produces sodium hydrogen carbonate (baking soda). The white crystalline powder of sodium hydrogen carbonate being less soluble, does get separated out.
What are the important uses of NaHCO3.
Sodium bicarbonate , also known as baking soda, is used to relieve heartburn, sour stomach, or acid indigestion by neutralizing excess stomach acid. When used for this purpose, it is said to belong to the group of medicines called antacids.
Why Bread have small pores in it?
When baking soda is mixed in flour and water is poured then it releases carbon dioxide which get trapped in the flour and make it flofy..
Why is the Biological importance of sodium & potassium?
    Biological Importance of Sodium
1.Sodium is used for electrolyte balance and fluid balance.
2.Sodium ions are necessary for heart activities and certain metabolic functions. Health is affected when the body has too much and too little sodium.
    Biological Importance of Potassium
1.Potassium ions maintain the osmolarity (the concentration of a solution expressed as the total number of solute particles per liter) of the cell. They also regulate the opening and the closing of the stomata.
2.Potassium is important in heart function and in skeleton and muscle contraction.
3.Nerve impulse transmission( generation of action potential)
