It seemed to me like Rain thought he was much better while in fact just being a little bit better, and he threw two macro games by repetitively attacking into a ton of sunkens.
In the last game in particular, I'm pretty sure that he had a decent-to-large lead after killing about 30 drones, which he then threw by doing a frontal attack into the natural... which was super well defended with lots of sunkens and spread-out lurkers, allowing larva to exchange super cost effectively.
Yeah, also he did a drop on the main when there were no minerals left. Would have been better if he had done the drop at the 7 o' clock which was less well defended and still mining.
If zerg plays a turtle game, then so can protoss with cannons, reavers etc. but yeah Rain was the aggressor every game except game 1

It's not fair saying Rain is a little bit better. Larva has clearly proven that he's a better Broodwar player than Rain with this series. He beat him without question, he was consistently good and he made very little mistakes.
If you are a bit better at broodwar than someone else you might win 60% of games against them, which would give you an approximately 80% chance to win a Bo5 series. Suppose the 20% come to be and you lose. Has the other person now "clearly proven" to be a better player even though they win fewer games on average than you do?
No. Clearly, that is a silly statement, as is calling it "not fair" when I say "it seems to me that Rain is slightly better". If saying that is not fair then "fair" doesn't mean anything anymore.
Excellent commentary, damn this was entertaining, the way you two guys play off each other with humor and good narration made my day, and damn nice soothing voices.. Give these two a bonus.

I was rooting for Rain the whole time, it really seemed like a lot of heart to bash his head against those walls over and over again, (edit: and it was so close too, it's like they were cracked and crumbling but never fell) Arctosis' coupon analogy was so apt, Larva just held so many times he deserved those wins.

btw: You could have seen it before in the game, but it is not true that max damage of plague to archon is 9 damage, because how plague works:
_"Casts red toxic spores on units within the effect radius. These units subsequently begin to take 4 damage per second, ignoring armor, until a total of 300 Hit Points is lost or until the unit's health falls to 1-3 Hit Points. "_
That means that assuming Archon has full 10 hp, it can loose up to 8 hp (10->6->2) due to plague.

what an insane series
great games! really nice to watch. I wonder if TH-cam can add something to make videos like this spoiler free, e.g. adding 1-2 hours of black screen after the actual video so you dont know when its finished. Because if someone is ahead 2-1 in a bo5 and the video only goes on for 20 more minutes, you automatically know whats going to happen.

Just look up the anticipation addon for firefox and chrome, it blocks the bar so you can't see how long the video is. You can't click to navigate but the arrow keys help with that. Also works with twitch vods.

I avoid this issue by not looking at the seek bar during playback. Use the arrow keys to skip pass ads and just block the bottom of the screen with your arm or whatever so you dont see it lol. Or try these fancy extensions people are talking about but watch out for them. Some have key trackers and virus' etc. For the little amount of effort i think its better to just not look at the seek bar and use the arrow keys
Larva has improved dramatically since season 1 of this year. God damn.
We have a lot of Protoss players in the league but not many of them can go far.

Epic games. Never was a zerg or protoss player, but still loved the games. Amazing. And always superb casting by Tasteless and Artosis - had me cracking up at many points. Keep up the great work!

Couldve have toss used disruption web to void out those static defences and force lurkers to move? It costs a lot, but he had most of the map to himself and zerg was not actively putting any pressure so it might be worth a try?

Late game Zerg vs Anything is the hardest thing to do in this game. I can't believe Larva's evolution throughout these seasons. You can see him holding at 50 apm ahead of Rain until he knew he had broken him. The stamina you need to pull off this kind of game is crazy.
Starting with 1:43:30, 1:50:50 and from 1:54:55 to 2:03:24 just non stop sweating.

2:02:43 That wasn't Larva hopping the lings into the main. That was larva saving a few lings for later correctly thinking that the dead cannons wouldn't be rebuilt.
He then waited for the zealots to join the scarce main army of Rain and then finished the nexus with said lings. Not before putting hold position lurkers to intercept the army trying to save the it.

Larva microing that hydra in and out of his overlord at the 37 min mark of game 3. Actually extremely impressive and obviously a bit of a "get out move".
Didn't Rain waste too much ressources on storm drops that often do very little damage?
I mean one dt/ht drop every once in a while is ok but he was basically sending them to die every 10 sec I feel like.
1 Shuttle + 2 Templars => 300 minerals / 300gas (not counting the possible dt and/or zealot so up to 500/425)
6 drones + 2 scourges = 325 mineral , 75 gas (sometimes he kills more than 6 drones but most of the time he kills less)
I think handling those drops require more apm/multitasking than defending them too, but I might be mistaken.
So why not use these ressources / apm to just secure more expands and tech to arbiters faster and get good recalls ?
Dom in my opinion rain should have to reach 200 population around 12:00 minutes. With a mass archons . I think rain played bad
Agreed, though it should be noted that gettings 6 drones also means that the opponent loses mining time... so it's more than just 300 minerals (50 minerals to make a drone). FWIW

I honestly really enjoy how little info the ui gives, no production tab, no income, army size, workers killed. Much less clutter
By the way, I really want to know why did protoss neglect all of the armor upgrades. I understand they can be perceived as useless in pvt, but here? is getting your ass whooped for 8dmg per ling attack worth it? IMO it's a very bad choice for protoss to upgrade attack only

Larva's rock-solid play almost feels like a zerg version of flash. I think he deserves the champion this season, even though I'm a fan of flash and jaedong.
this games show you the reason why, you should have some corsairs with your army, so observers don't get sniped by scourges or spore colonies

dark archons have been used in the past in PvZ against mutas it's not new
really interesting to see how pvz has evolved! i think arbiters+recall to take out zerg expansions while turtling and expanding with storms and reavers is the way to combat a turtling zerg like what larva was doing. the recalls worked well for rain in game 3. basically kills the hatch and a bunch of drones before zerg can really react to and defend against it. it really requires that sairs are there to protect the arbiter from scourge though; "sneaking in" like in pvt probably won't work with the overlord spread for vision, and scourge fly much faster than arbs.
another thing that might be interesting is to try and mind control and steal a drone, then make a bunch of lurkers for turtling. lurkers destroy lings sooooo hard, and lings seem to be the ultimate zvp late game unit. imagine reavers being protected by allied lurkers. those reavers will not die to lings, or really anything. also you'd get overlords for detection so no more observer troubles :)

I'm not the best at Starcraft so I was wondering if someone could tell me why they never got the web ability for Corsairs in games 3 or 4. I know it's not that common but if a zerg is turtling I'd think you could reduce a lot of the damage you're taking if you web the sunken colonies.
It to micro heavy to do it, and you already have High templar, Shuttles with reavers and your observers to babysit, addign a Fourth unit would be a Nightmare
Since nothing can launch attacks under a disruption web, it doesnt make things easier for Protoss when facing chaos circumstances. And it cost 125 mana which means most of the time a corsair can only cast it once per battle which makes this very cost unefficent
btw: zergs can both plague (devourer-hit and ensnare too) hallucinations to make them pop :)

Folks, is it really that pointless to upgrade protoss shield? I have never (or very rarely) seen it in any pro game. I mean, toss building also will benefit from it. Is it too expensive for what it does?
It's not emphasized because it's just shield recharge rate, not damage reduction, so no extra survivability in a fight. That said it's great if youre playing a hit and run style a lot
For one yes it's twice the price of attack and def upgrades.
The other thing is Protoss shields take full damage from all damage types so a vulture for example does its full 20 damage vs buildings and large units instead of only 25% that it does once shields are depleted. Then there is the science vessel EMP.
Against zerg hydras are very good vs shields but overall shields are better to upgrade vs zerg than Terran
Austin Conner That's not true, upgrading shields in Starcraft is just like armor upgrades except it applies to shields instead of the normal health. There's no way to upgrade recharge rate.
