    For the younger viewers: Aldridge talking about Sunderland not being able to afford £80k - that's the transfer fee, not his weekly wage!

    A Red through and through. Possibly one of the most unappreciated players in our history. Great player, He would f*cking die for us (still would).
    Stats say (wiki) 83 league appearances , 50 goals !
    To this day I continue scratching my head as to why we let this fella go.

      Thank you. I was just thinking that myself. We've had others like that though. Players who would have been all time greats at some clubs, but unless they get a specific shout out, their names rarely get a mention. For me its Kevin Keegan and John Toshack. The guys played his heart out for us, yet they get overlooked a lot.

      It was the way the club operated, they did the same with Souness, sell a player for more than you paid for him, the club called it good business sense. It may have looked good on a spreadsheet, but it was terrible football sense. Souness was at his peak in Rome and There was a loss of power without him, same with Aldo.

    What's great about this interview isn't just that John Aldridge is a great guest who can talk at length about anything he's prompted to, but also that there's a huge amount of respect between him and Jan Molby. Both of them are quick to praise the other for their talents and the contribution that made to their own game, which is heartwarming.

    Still tops my list of favourite Liverpool players of all time. Those 2.5 seasons at anfield provided me immense joy.
    I was extremely fortunate to meet Aldo and he told us a fantastic story about bashing up an infamous Spanish centre back when he initially moved to Sociedad. He was advised by his teammates to stay clear of this particular player but his teammates didn't know about the scouse mentality which ironically is similar to the basque one. If I remember rightly, this player (can't remember if he was a Bilbao or Zaragoza player) was doing all sorts off the ball and Aldo stayed patient for a bit and then had enough cracked him one back. Bloodied him up. His Sociedad teammates said he would be targeted by all the opposing players for the return fixture as he was a marked man. Along came the return fixture and Aldo was dreading it not knowing what he was about to face but staggeringly he wasn't touched. In fact, they all stayed well clear of him. Taking down their hard man was the best thing Aldo could've done. They shook his hands and showed him an immense amount of respect. Proper scouser. I've paraphrased.the story and obviously Aldo tells it better.
    Although I was extremely upset when Aldo left but looking back, I'm glad he had that experience in the Basque Republic. Set him up financially too

    I am an Ireland fan. But to me Aldo has to be the most genuine fella that declared for Ireland. He was really proud of it. John even changed his game to suit Charlton’s style. If anyone wants a laugh search Aldridge Mexico USA 94. He lost his head at the official who would not let him on. Then was so annoyed he scored the goal which meant Ireland qualified for the last 16 on goal difference.

    To this day I really don't know why John Aldridge didn't aim for the other side of the goal in the FA Cup Final against Wimbledon with his penalty.
    He had been placing them in the very same corner throughout the entire season so a change on the day would have been nice as goalkeeper Dave Beasant had clearly done his homework.
    Oh well, distant history now.

    • @Stormy177
      @Stormy177 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@jsimmo7041 If he'd executed it how he'd hoped (i.e. actually into the corner) Beasant probably still wouldn't have been able to save it, so it was a combination of a bad penalty and a 'keeper who'd done his homework.
