I don´t know if its appropriate for a madridista to interject here but Macca is still loved and admired in the Bernabeu. He broke the curse on english players at Real.
Macca is a legend, when he came into the first team like a ray of sunshine. Tricky and skilful, exciting, we watched him grow from a skinny kid to a skinny man and a world class talent. Ynwa
Legend. My footballing hero when i first started watching Liverpool properly. The guy was a wizard, and his linkup with Fowler was up there with the best partnerships.
Have to agree, that Roy Evans team with Redknapp, Barnes, Fowler, McManaman, Rush, Jones, Matteo and even David Thompson was so easy to support, and the football was so flowing - it's a shame they didn't win that infamous FA Cup but that's sport.
Steve McManaman, my favourite liverpool player from the premier league era (yes even above Stevie, Fernando, Luis Suarez, Mikey and God, plus Robertson and Jurgen's champs), and 2nd fave all time, only to King Kenny. Loved watching him play, so direct, and exciting, didn't lose the ball. Destroyed teams with his running for Liverpool, and made the Galacticos tick in the hugest of games later in his career. So intelligent. Should have been picked to start for England throughout his Pool and Madrid career, a no brainer. A crime that he was not. He's right about that Evans 90's team, they were fantastic to watch, probably just a Carragher or Van Dijk and an Allisson short of being the best team in the land. And I love how upbeat he is and always has a fresh perspective. Loved how during the pandemic he made the point that Liverpool shouldn't spend millions, that that would be a slap in the face to those struggling, obscene. He said it better than me. Right or wrong, I think those little insights are gold. And it's funny to me that recently Liverpool have signed a player, the first to ever remind me of Macca. A long way to go before he could be mentioned in the same breath, but... Luis Diaz, great to see him running strong, proud, committed, skillful, touch, little lay offs, goals. It took me a while to notice, but then suddenly "hey, he's a bit like Macca!" Thanks Steve, you were the best, I loved every second :) YNWA Massively underrated. They often, before Gareth Bale, give him the moniker "the most successful British export." Sure. But actually, it wasn't about what he won, it was was about how he played.
Well done Steve I met you in Hale Barns Cheshire about 10 years inside a DIY store and said happy you went to Madrid You smiled Liverpool and Everton pray on the local kids It is a business and Steve did well Keegan was the same There is a life outside Liverpool and a better lifestyle Well done Steve
I fell in love with Liverpool FC in 1986..I've seen some of the best reds players ever lived and I must say Steve Mcnamanan is and will always be my favorite player
Dear Macca! You certainly did put a smile on me face! You and RF9 were the reason I loved Liverpool! I was and still am a proud Liverpool fan because we once had you playing for us!
Shaggy was a great player. The nearest we had to John Barnes in terms of being able to run with the ball. The solo goals against Bolton and Celtic would still be talked about if it was Messi.
I love Steve McMananman. His name was the first ever players name I got on the back of a shirt, the original Ecru Reebok away shirt. Highly under rated as a player at Liverpool by the fans & I can't understand why. Steve McMananan you are a legend in my eyes YNWA
I've got so many shirts majority Fowler I really wanted a macca shirt. Fowler signed one. But he was giving me stick and then signed it and was saying "I just wrote on your shirt what you gunna do" I had no idea about signatures back then and tried to wash it off 😭
He needed to win trophies. How many did he win at Liverpool? Klopp has won a Champions League but he has also lost two UCL finals and a UEFA Cup Final - people remember these things when they look back at the record books. Shame Macca didn't get a European Championship under his belt with England too ... that agonising slide in towards goal in the 6-yard box from Gazza ... every time you watch it you think it's going in
I get a lot of stick for being a Liverpool fan from Essex but I'm 34 now and I fell in love with Liverpool because of how they played with guys like Macca and Robbie in the team back when I was a kid
Hated macca for years even upto today for leaving us on a free, I couldn't get my head around him leaving us i was 14 when he left. Didn't know all that about his mum being ill and passing away etc I'm sure she would be mega proud of his career, terrific player.
@@jimhunter5348 to be fair, not just that - he was offered a chance to play for real madrid and they were an incredible side he went on to win two champions leagues and league titles with madrid!
No one that was born from 1994/5 onwards would understand how different class this guy was in the 90s early Ryan giggs was the only other....he was immense. Its no mistake he ended up in one of the most legendary european teams of the last 25 years and won 2 champion leagues.
I agree with Graeme Souness when he said that when he returned to Liverpool as manager, it was the wrong time, by his own addmitance he made many mistakes and his bull in a china shop approach didn't work with the seasoned pro's. However, had he been given the managers role a few years later, his role might have been just what they needed, he would have instiled dicipline when it was needed.
I’m sure they’ll have Stevie lined up, along with Sir ‘King’ Kenny, Carra, Barnsey, Rushie, Souness, even Stevie Nicol, Keegan, and hopefully Hansen, plus many, many more. Embarrassment of world class ex players, just so many greats from the mid 60’s, but especially the 70’s and 80’s plus many from the 90’s, and the new millennium onwards. Edit, sorry, Barnes has already been on… another one to watch. Prefer listening to ex players, as they have had the time and space to put things into perspective and not worry about keeping themselves in the mentality of ‘one game at a time’ and ‘the only important match is the next one’ which ex players are free from.
I will always always love McManaman. Don't agree with every single one of his views, but my god he was some fucking baller. Genius. And a lovely guy when I met him.
I love how scouse he is on this as he doesn't sound like this on BT Sports as commentator. Amazing Podcast as usual Can u get Stevie next? Also id love to hear from Grobbelaar, Torres, Suarez and Roy Evans!
As someone who was too young to remember him playing and doesn’t really rate him as a pundit or commentator, this has really helped me warm to him. I’ve seen his goal compilations and the old season reviews and he was obviously class but I always just thought of him as someone who had his success elsewhere and never really classed him as a Liverpool legend.
McMacca was an awesome player at Liverpool in the 90s so so good as a dribbler and his pace dribbling with the ball….but I always wanted to know what happened that day between Macca and Bruce Grobblar ???
Remember my brother playing for villa reserves against Liverpool at anfield and coming home and saying he had played against a superstar , it was macca
Great talk, loved Shaggy,,I've got a match shirt of Stevie off big Neville Southall,,,match worn signed by all the lfc boys of the 96,,,,when the lads signed there names and you could read it gods on the shirt and Michael Owen ,,,,great days
What a player, great example of Liverpool's legacy. A sustainable plan for a club would be to bring the academy coaches into the first team alongside the players that graduate. No more hiring super managers, but an escalator system instead. For example, Klopp would be replaced by Alex inglethorpe as his youth team emerge into the first team.
Macca was amazing for us, he was the main man for me during the 90's knitting midfield with attack. Was gutted when he left for Madrid, but delighted he was a success there.
Yeah the joint manager thing was weird , it just smelt of to weak to actually sack Roy and replace him with Gerard H. I now fully understand why he left. Fantastic player. Really enjoying these interviews. Cheers.
Macca was a great servant to LFC. I was gutted when he left for Real Madrid but I can understand why he made the choice. Always a Anfield great in my eyes … that goal against Celtic in the UEFA Cup though ! 😮😮
Macca & Robbie my first LFC heroes. Pure energy

Enjoyed that - Macca and Robbie were an absolute joy to watch on the pitch.
A brilliant footballer and a fantastic attitude to his career. Thanks guys, another excellent podcast.
Naturally gifted. So casual. That was our Shaggy, always played with a smile on his face.
This man is the reason I fell in love with Liverpool

Matteo and Thompson not world class
They did just not with Evans

This is the best series of football interviews I’ve ever heard/watched👏👏
What a player. What a man. That '95 cup final. Thanks for everything Steve, would like to thank you in person one day.

i am a everton fan from toxteth i went to school with fowler st pats and nugent he was on another level even asa child he was that good
Love this, funny, heartwarming, interesting banter. Real feel good stuff.
Macca and God were my childhood idols. My two favourite players growing up. The reason I still love the club today is because of you guys
I hated football as a kid everyone just wanted to play it then I watched the Worthington cup final and these two made me fall in love with the game
Dear Macca! You certainly did put a smile on me face! You and RF9 were the reason I loved Liverpool! I was and still am a proud Liverpool fan because we once had you playing for us!
Robbie Fowler is the reason why I support Liverpool! It was one of the best decisions I've made in my life!
Loved watching these pair play, being born in 84 They definitely had an influence on me becoming a football fan even as a villa fan
Leeds united fan here, i absolutely loved Macca growing up and this was awesome to watch.

still sad that macca leaves the club...but im happy to see your achievement abroad....
you are the reason i love Liverpool FC so much till this day...
I love the Liverpool banter... Alan from Ireland
Well, that was easy 40 minutes. Always good to hear Macca!
He definitely entertained. Tremendous player. The main man in my youth.
I am happy he spoke up. I was one of those fans who felt betrayed when he left on free transfer. Continue to support him.

@Adam Marshall are you living prior 2020?
So glad this has come a long never knew the back ground in when he left what a player as Zidane described him as one the best
As a former Kop season ticket holder i saw these two play many times
Loved Macca growing up, you will be remembered for the exact reasons you said at the end for me.

Macca was two wingers and a support striker in one player. That free role he played was devastating to the opposition
