Texas Rig Tricks To Catch More Bass! (BEGINNER And ADVANCED)

  • Many anglers fail to understand how adaptable the Texas Rig really is. They may give it a few minutes without a bite and move on, never realizing what could have been with some minor changes. Today we're covering the different types of baits we use to fine tune the bite in different situations, ways that we modify the rig, and key baits that out fish all the others when things get tough.
    The Texas Rig needs to be a staple in your bass fishing arsenal. From tiny bfs baits to heavy cover flipping, this rig will load the boat every month of the year if you understand how to leverage its fish catching ability. Pay close attention to Matt's favorite baits from each category as he goes in-depth about using this technique.
    Below you'll find links to the exact baits shown in the video. We've included our favorite sizes and colors, as well as the gear we use to fish them. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

    Timing of this video is unbelievable. I went out last night and threw a texas rig simply because I hadn't in a long time. We only had a couple of hours before dark settled in and I didn't want to take out a 100 rods, so I just tied on a texas rig and went down the bank. Caught a ton of little guys, BUT I also caught a 5 lb 4 oz largemouth (good size for my area). Rage bug, 4/0 EWG and a heavy spinning rod, high speed reel and 15lb braid to 15 floro and wella, I was catching fish! Tons of fun, something I will do more of this early season before we get to dead of summer. This and the Shakey Head feel like forgotten techniques. Doing more of both this season.

      How do you fish without a texas rig?

    • @nawinchester
      @nawinchester 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThatSB We don't fish for largemouth very often, we pretty much exclusively Chase smallmouth and it's just not a go-to-bait when we're fishing smallmouth. That said, going forward anytime. We're on a large mouth body of water. I'll be tying on a Texas rig for sure. :-)

    Very informative per usual. Fishing a Texas rig is where I think every beginner fisherman should start in order to develop a feel for when a fish is biting. I'm sure there's something in the archives that must address all the do's and don'ts When fishing let's say a deep weed line. It would be nice to see a new video talking about clicking a bail too soon, fishing on a semi tight line, Using your finger on the line as well as your rod and watching your line. Also how to not let too much slack when hoping the bait back to the boat. These techniques will help every beginning angler whether they're fishing a Texas rig or any other form of weighted Soft plastic. My biggest peeve with the Wacky rigged worm is that most people have no sense of when a fish bites it and either miss the bite or let the fish engulf the lure down there gullet.just saying.

    I literally cannot stress how timely this video is, I was no joke thinking to myself last night that Tactical hasn't done a deep dive into Texas rigging in quite a while and I decided to myself that I might leave a comment on today's video suggesting that very idea. You guys have done it again! Thanks for all of the amazing information and happy fishing! 🎣

    Matt and Tim, please consider a video focused on the big bass that STAY SHALLOW as summer comes. I'm in the Midwest fishing from shore in small natural bodies of water. However, in TH-cam I am seeing lots of videos across Manu channels about deep water legde fishing far offshore in southern reservoirs. It looks interesting, but those videos pertains to me the same as saltwater tarpon fishing videos.

    Been subscribed for about 5 years now. Tacticalbassin has been responsible for so much of my success in bass fishing, especially your videos about jig fishing. I can go out with confidence and know that I'm targeting the biggest bass in the lake thanks to all the knowledge from you and Tim. Recommended your channel to hundreds of fellow fishermen over the years. Finally a video where I thought, I'm not gonna pick up anything new, I've been Texas rigging for almost 30 years. And right out the gate you prove me wrong with the tip about rigging a brush hog. Can't thank y'all enough for all the knowledge!

    Your videos have been extremely helpful!!!! Thanks for all of your advice. I caught a 6 pound large mouth bass using a texas rig set up. I also caught a couple 20 pound catfish that were almost as long as I am tall and I am 5 foot 4 inches. 😂 It was epic. I just ordered some 1/2 oz and 1/4 oz Tungsten worm weights in the Junebug color and some 1/8 and 5/16 oz Tungsten worm weights in the green pumpkin color. I got a bunch of Junebug soft baits including the straight worms and curly tails. Got some great quality crank baits (shallow and deep divers) chatter and spinner baits along with some paddle tail and split tails for the trailers. My Shimano's world pop flash boost top water lure is my new favorite. I just ordered some 3/8 oz shaky heads with some 4 inch green pumpkin zoom bait finess worms and some 4 inch green pumpkin Keitech crazy flappers. I got a box of 100 off set wide hooks in various sizes for my texas rig set ups and I also recently bought a 6 foot 6 inch GX2 4 piece Ugly Stick to pair with a Penn Pursuit IV 3000 spinning reel cause I am a single mom on a pretty tight budget. Not too bad of a deal for a little over $100.00. I am going to use a multi colored 30 pound test braided line with a 15 pound florocarbon leader. My ex boyfriend was a pro bass fisherman and guide but he never really taught me much in regards to what baits to use. He would usually just set up my rig so I have had to educate myself since we broke up. I have spent alot of time learning online. Buying lures and baits has become way too addictive! 😊
    Soap operas and reality tv shows are now a thing of the past.
    Watching fishing videos on TH-cam has officially become,
    the new normal. 😂
    Thanks again for the great content. 😁

    I have been having so much fun going thru thick grass with the Big Bite baits BFE! Comes thru so clean and that thing gets bit! Tilapia color has just been getting crushed for me! I usually have 2 texas rigs on at any time, one with a stop and heavier weight and then one either weightless or with a little tiny weight. Seems to always work and its nothing to swap plastics for a different profile or look.

    I totally agree with you Matt. I use an EWG hook about 90% of the time. The only time I will use a straight shank hook is if I’m flipping or punching heavy pads. Did I mention I live on Lake Cumberland which is a highland reservoir with a grand total of zero pads. Matt, I also wanted to pass along a hook recommendation that I have recently tried and been extremely impressed with. It’s called the hammer hook made by Gamechanger lures and Googan Baits. This is a hybrid hook of sorts. You get the weedless benefits that you’d get from an EWG but you also get the hook set and hook penetration benefits of a round bend or straight shank. Listen I’ll be first to admit that I’m no Googan fanboy but this hammer hook they’ve got is fantastic and well worth a try. Tight Lines fellas

    Excellent advice all around 👍 love the large worms at my local lake here in so cal. Most guys are drop-shoting or wacky wormin so using anything different that the bass aren't seeing everyday is producing. 3 8lbers, 5 or 6 5lbers and 20 + 4lbers this year so far 😎

    about 2 weeks I tied on a TR and a chatterbait. haven't changed them since and been leaning on each depending on conditions, and been killin it on both. BUT yesterday I found a cove and a good size patch of cover and pitched the edge, punched into it and landed 4 bass withing a 20 minute span, ranging from 1.15 to 3.4 pounds.

    I know a lot of people around me love their beaver and craw style baits, but for me, nothing beats a weightless 5” green pumpkin yamamoto senko on a 3/0 hook. Went through a whole pack in like 3 fishing trips but man do they slay!

      They are great; I also love pulling a craw / creature just below or on the surface through the grass or pads. That can be some serious topwater fun.

    I love to fish the TRD Bugs on a 1/8 oz. cylinder weight Free Rigged on a 1/0 Matsuo EWG on 8lb test . It glides like a paper airplane lol ... I throw it around submerged timber here in East Tennessee on Norris and Douglas Lake . It wrecks em !!! - Even in 8 ft vis . We even used it on locked down bed fish 👍👍

    Something that I never see other people throw but is super effective for me is the yamamoto shad shaped worm in a natural color, thrown on a small and thin wire EWG hook with an un pegged 1/16th oz bullet weight. Fish it somewhere between how you would fish a senko and a fluke. I like it on 20lb braid with a 10lb flouro leader, thrown on a medium spinning rod. When I'm facing a skunk, this is what I tie on and 9 times out of 10 I find myself hooking into a fish. I've caught fish 19"+ on this setup, although this is definitely more of a quantity over quality presentation. For some reason this will get a bite when nothing else is doing the trick. Another thing I use frequently that most people don't seem to throw is a punching senko. Pegged 3/4oz weight, 5" senko. Senko pulls through vegetation nicely without any appendages

    I live In Okeechobee and rarely get to fish the lake.i own a 8ft jonboat,and fish the river,and taylor creek and everglades ponds with it
    Shallow water, and heavy cover are what I see mostly. And my version of bfs is 15lb braid 6ft8 baitcast rod medium action. And I'll pitch this into gnarly trees,and Texas rig,or jig is my favorite on this setup. The buzz bait is good too, stike king 1/8 oz w a 7 to1 is money. And I just picked up the 8lb and 10 lb braided lines to try out💥🎣👍after watching Matt smash em on the Arashi I was thinking I need to find that smaller line,and see where the limits are with this setup.🤙

    In a local backwater creek system, I have fished 10 inch zoom ribbon tail worms for 20 years and I have good success with 1-3 pound bass and occasional lunkers. Never use a weight, never used any other plastic. Have thought about trying new things but can’t decide if I should mix things up.

    Reaction Inovation are some fantastic baits. I fished a lake 2 weeks ago with them(swimbaits) and i saw 25 people get skunked. I caught 10 2.5 lbs 5 3lbs and a couple of 5 lbs. We were at a big campground and later that evening i thought i was a celebrity with all of the attention. Been using them for about 4 years.

    Talking about pegging a Texas rig for flipping, do you or Tim ever use two bobber stops? Or do you use insert bobber stops/t-stop systems for the heavier presentations? I'm curious if you guys could do a video on leader knots on spinning and baitcaster. I've tied the FG knot for all my spinning combos and have success everytime. With baitcaster combos I've had terrible outcomes of the knots skipping on the first hookset.

    The video I needed. What worms and what weight would you guys use on a submerged grass flat? 6'-8' deep, grass comes up to about 2 or 3' under the surface.

    • @oldeschoolbob1022
      @oldeschoolbob1022 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like a floating worm could be fun. I would also consider a swimming worm (Speed Worm style), swam just above the tops of the grass. I suggest staying light with the weight: 1/16 or 1/8, or even weightless if your set-up can handle it. Good luck!

    How do you feel about screw lock hooks ? I've been using them a lot more lately and feel like it saves the bait a little longer. Do you think it effects the presentation or would cause less bites than a traditional EWG hook ?

    Hey Matt I'm having a difficult time deciding between a 7'1 MHF and a 7'4 MHF rod. I'll be using it for Texas rigs specifically and use 1/8oz 99% of the time.
    I flip a lot next to cover (next to the lili pads and angel hairs but not inside them, of that makes sense). But casting far and accurately is extremely important for me on this set up.
    Which one would you recommend?

    Hi Matt, if you fish the crazy flapper under docks "when it is tough", why not fish it ALL the time? Nice work today!

    • @cameronroberts5461
      @cameronroberts5461 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason not to fish it all the time is that you can catch more on a proper profile bait for the body of water. If you can pick out the right popper etc you can get more hits

  • @jeffthebean1

    I’ve enjoyed using a light nail weight in a craw bait on a 2/0 Gamakatsu EWG hook, and finessing it in on like, small farm ponds, or abandoned golf course ponds. No need to peg a weight, and it’s stupid discreet.
    That said, doesn’t work well around surface grass, but if there’s a bunch if grass on bottom, it’s worked wonders for me. Kinda flutters down. It’s gonna take some practice to throw, and you may have to back off the brakes so much that you backlash a bit, but with practice, it’s a deadly technique.

    Here in TN.. a lot of people talk down on the zoom lizards.. I grabbed a pack of pumpkin chartreuse.. caught a fish on my 1st 3rd 4th and 5th cast.. first time ever with that many in a row.. caught 2 bass a channel cat and a think was a walleye maybe a sauger idk because I am not that well versed in fish identification that I haven't caught much of.. at the mouth of where a creek dumps into the Cumberland river in nashville. Urban area.. it was a beautiful morning

    It’s so funny to hear about BFS. This is how I grew up bass fishing 40 years ago. 1/16 oz lead with 4-5” worms on casting gear and 8#. Or 1/64 or 1/32 on spinning gear with #2 or #4.

    I like the idea of a tiny Texas rig, and ill deffinatly be trying it, but as someone who almost always ends up throwing a ned im curious why not just throw it on a weed less ewg ned head? Does a straight line tie as opposed to a 90 degree line tie of a jig hook make that much difference in action or coming through cover?
