Was watching this last night, saw him break it open and pull out a brass shot shell, almost flipped the table when I exclaimed "That's a LeMat!" Never seen my dad so confused before.
Eh, the show has an out, that is that it's not a real western, and instead it's a theme park way in the future where the weapon cartridges contain technology that gives them ability to recognize host from human and adjust their lethality accordingly
A point regarding the weapons used: while the production obviously uses blanks for safety reasons, both Guests and Hosts use cartridges based on the 'Simunition' rounds used in live fire training. Which also neatly explains the lack of muzzleloaders: Mess up the powder charge, and even a training bullet will kill you.
The bullet lethality is something that requires a suspension of disbelief, and if not adequately explained in the show. If they were just simunitions, Harris' shotgun round would not have been able to go through the wall and hit that one guy in episode 2, nor would they throw people back when hit (not that real bullets do either, but you get the point).

Glad you did this, I was curious about the weapon and could find no commercial version available or explanation of the shows weapon... they focused an unusual amount of screen time on its disassembly which was cool....and it appears the Ed Harris character would have used the "shotshell" cartridge loaded with a sabot to appear to have penetrated the wall to shoot the hiding character...since an example of this gun is not in the glass case for selection by the guests I thought it was a special mod Harris had obtained for the possible killing of "guests" or "park operators" when he gets to the Maze level of the game....great show.
I actually watched that episode last night and went "Wait a second... I know that, its a Le-M....something or other? I think Forgotten did something with it".
You'd think actors could simulate recoil by jerking the gun a little up and back when firing blanks. They'd just have to help it along a bit as the discharge of the powder would be enough to get it going.
I was super curious about conversion le mats after seeing that second episode. It looks like some armorer ginned up a pretty creative solution to a producers request, and they worked out a great scene around it. I was just looking at IMFDB yesterday after starting rewatching some of Westworld and was going to request a video on this gun. Really, really neat piece of equipment.
Thanks for the comments. I watched two episodes and I was impressed by the LeMat. It may or may not have been a practical sidearm, but it sure is impressive in Hollywood productions. The first time I saw a LeMat was in the 1950's TV western "Johnny Ringo" where Ringo is a sheriff and carries a LeMat on a special holster. They mention the shotgun, but never showed how it was detonated. I didn't learn that until I saw your videos and some others showing the LeMat. The TV version appeared to be a cartridge gun, but had the appearance of the front loader. One magazine article stated that Don Durant had retained the gun after the series was cancelled.
I get the impression Hollywood gun houses aren't into sharing info or talking to the press (and are possibly not even pro-2A to begin with), but it would be cool to see some interviews with gunsmiths who make modified arms for movies and tv, learn about the demands from the directors/producers, balancing them with function and safety, and what flexibilities being blank firing opens up.
MarvinRunyon check out Tested on TH-cam. Adam Savage has an extensive collection of props he has built or collected from movies, including firearms. He also has an obsession with the gun from blade runner.
I'm pretty sure there's either a show about that, or you could possibly find the contact info for prop houses. I think I recall there being interviews or even entire featurettes on how they created the Star Wars blasters out of stock model guns.
I think having it blank-fire only lets you get away with a lot of things, like shorter barrels, concealability, and full-auto. I also think there's something called "non-guns", which are gun props that look like guns and when used, look like fired guns, but are in fact not even guns at all and don't even fire blanks, since some scenes have the firearm discharged at distances too dangerous for a blank.
Now that's really interesting. I've yet to click on a Forgotten Weapons video and be disappointed. Always full of extremely interesting information and back-stories, either about the guns themselves or the makers. Marvellous stuff! MsG

It’s the same gun. Probably exactly. It’s a prop house special. Just like how Firefly used the combat uniforms from Starship Troopers for alliance troops.

So you actually had two weapons in one ...a revolver and a tiny shotgun . I would say despite the fact it is a bit complicated as a gun it was actually a good idea in general
And 9 rounds as well! Imagine coming up on a mounted horseman with 18 shots loaded AND 2 shotgun shells just ready to go? (My favorite pair of guns to use in Red Dead Online.)

I was super excited to see my favorite revolver on the show even if they had to fudge how it operates a little bit. The disassembly scene was great. The show Firefly also had a cartridge converted LeMat Revolver carried by the character Jane but the shotgun barrel was not functional. Oddly enough, there IS a scene in one episode where he disassembles the weapon to clean it and you can clearly see nine cartridges lined up waiting to be loaded in when he's done cleaning it.
Considering the rest of the sci-fi liberties taken for granted, having a redesigned Lemat with Ed Harris is cool. I guess he could always pull out his K98 sniper rifle for the long distance stuff... Great show and I hope it runs for at least a couple of seasons. JJ ABRAMS knows his stuff and the cast is full of incredible talent also.

Super Cool...I've been reading a sci-fi series since the 80's where one of the characters uses one of these regularly... another character uses a H+K caseless auto rifle... Which I got to see here as well. Always wondered what they looked like 😉👌
NOBODY but me is going to mention Firefly? How that looks suspiciously like Captain Reynolds gun? Nobody? Ain't no Browncoats here? "Take my love, take my land, take me where I cannot stand - Burn the land, boil the sea, you can't take the sky from me....".
I have an answer. Stembridge Gun Works did a conversion almost EXACTLY like this for Johnny Ringo. It fired 9 .45 blanks and had a brass cartridge that an additional one could be loaded into for the shotgun firing in the center. My guess is that's also the inspiration for him having the gun.
Wow, that's a really cool display of attention to detail (and authenticity) in a show. That they actually heavily converted (or built from scratch) a LeMat revolver to be a cartridge-firing gun is awesome.
The man, the myth, the legend, GUN JESUS! (AKA Ian of Forgotten Weapons). You've been solving my un-google-able problems for years. Thanks Ian! If i had a million dollars, I'd give you half. I still need to buy guns and ammo after all.
the pistol rounds were muzzle loaded down the barrel into the cylinder the shot barrel was muzzle loaded with a separate primer most guns had conversion issues when cartridges arrived on the scene .it is also the gun the protagonist carries in the tv series "hell on wheels",about building railroads, post civil war ,if you really want to see a strange gun check out the ''walch 12 shot "
Great upload. I recognized the MiB's pistol as a LeMat (Red Dead Redemption ftw!), but was stumped when they showed him reloading it with .38 short. Very interesting conversion.
I figured that if it only fires blanks, then the calibre of the cylinder doesn't really matter too much, just make it to fit the blank cartridges. There's really only going to be hot gasses and maybe some wadding coming out of the barrel, no bullets.
Would enjoy a post about movie/tv guns, how they're modified for blank , especially the more challenging guns like Lugars and Thompsons. (One of my old gun magazine showed how they had use a bore obstructor and set screw to keep Lugar from locking and rig it to fire slightly out of battery. Lugar, once modified this way could never be converted back to live ammo.) Anyway a detailed study, as you do well, would be interesting on this subject.
I have to thank you twice for this video. First, when I watched episode 2 and I saw Ed lower the firing pin to shoot the shot shell, I was amazed at the historical accuracy they were showing on the show. Of course, I thought that because of one of your older videos I watched discussing the LeMat revolver. Second thanks because I now realize that was not exactly accurate.
I just finished Season 2 ep. 4. In it, Ed DOES unthread the barrel to open it. It's too quick to see if the center barrel also comes off, but it looks like it is all one unit after he's unthreaded it (they might've used 2 guns). Thanks for this explanation. I was curious about his pistol and also his saddle which looks exotic. I also wonder if the Mare's Leg carbine the Mexican desperado uses is the same one from "Wanted, Dead or Alive," or at least the same design. The cocking/loading lever has at least a similar shape, great for doing the twirling trick cocking move.
The unmodified version of the LeMat had a muzzleloading shotgun barrel but the cylinder was loaded at the front of the chambers like most cap and ball revolvers, NOT "muzzleloading" as stated.
For those wondering about those commercial conversions, it's 'Kirst' K-I-R-S-T. First few times hearing it here made it sound like 'Curse' and had a few false-starts on Google trying to find 'em. And he's right they don't do conversions for the LeMat but they do have them for the massive Colt Walker.
You think when Ian is watching TV or a movie with his wife he always points out all the firearm inaccuracies and she just politely nods her head and says 'yes dear that's very interesting.' every time?

The disassembly scene was great.
The show Firefly also had a cartridge converted LeMat Revolver carried by the character Jane but the shotgun barrel was not functional. Oddly enough, there IS a scene in one episode where he disassembles the weapon to clean it and you can clearly see nine cartridges lined up waiting to be loaded in when he's done cleaning it.
I know that it isn't practical being an expensive antique but I always liked the idea of a single shotgun shell included in a defensive revolver.
JJ Abrams is a hack who ruins everything he touches. It's two years later and hat do you think of Woke World now?
@@OpusBuddly I don't think he's a hack. I'm pretty sure he does what he does on purpose, like ticks or spider mites or flesh eating parasites.
...maybe rubbing alcohol and some diatomaceous earth would get rid of him?
@@OpusBuddly What are all of you on about? JJ Abrams has nothing to do with West World, it was directed/developed by Jonathan Nolan (Christopher Nolan's brother)
@@oddsolostrike They would have known that if they had used the same internet they watched TH-cam on to check imDb. But that's too easy.
Yup my dad has that on his colt 44 replica. Only thing i can tell you. Is the hammer is way softer then the firing pin . It has been tig weled up a few times now
Oh my 😂 the actual cartridge firing LeMat looks ridiculous! Imagine toting that bad boy around lmao. It’s still very cool, but also very impractical..
I recognized the LeMat in the show entirely thanks to Ian's videos about them. Thank you for making this separate video, too!
This was a cool video! I’m glad you made it.
You said that there’s no “cost effective” way for the gun to be like his was in the show. I think it’s safe to assume that he’s got his own custom-made.. since he’s able to spend 40k per day hanging out in a theme park lol
love westworld, great weapon overview
Thanks to this channel I knew what it was. My flatmates are a little worried I know about guns now though :P
It's a great show as well. Well worth watching.
That cartridge conversion looks so cool
Super Cool...I've been reading a sci-fi series since the 80's where one of the characters uses one of these regularly... another character uses a H+K caseless auto rifle...
Which I got to see here as well.
Always wondered what they looked like 😉👌
NOBODY but me is going to mention Firefly? How that looks suspiciously like Captain Reynolds gun? Nobody? Ain't no Browncoats here? "Take my love, take my land, take me where I cannot stand - Burn the land, boil the sea, you can't take the sky from me....".
One thing comes to mind for me.
It was probably converted to a center fired shotgun shell so the audience could see it was a big boy round.
Awesome. I was immediately curious when I saw it on the show. Definitely a treat to check my subs and see this video sitting there. Thanks!
Very cool episode, thanks!
A work of art it is.
Thanks Ian!
I have loved this pistol ever since I first read about it long before the inter web! Would love to have one
u got me watchin this and im addicted
love when you do media-parallel videos. like BF1 video and this one for instance.
I always wanted a modernized version of this gun. It was also in a series of books called the Deathlands
1:33 the cartridge version reminds me of the settler pistol from the rage games
I already knew about LeMats because I regularly watch Forgotten Weapons.
the gun is real .ive told my friend's about them for years but no one believe me . im glad someone is finally makeing videos of them
You're gonna love the show.
So Ed customize his gun. Pretty cool.
Thanks for the info Ian!!! I'm Loving westworld, I forgot how bad ass Ed Harris can be!
Ian you should totally make a series where you talk about the appearances of historic/oddball firearms in pop culture. Could be cool.
Please do more of these film/TV show firearm reviews. I'm a fan of the Internet Movie Firearm Database too and this seems like a great match up.
I wish he would just say “it’s a Lay Matt”
