    • @Bacteriophagebs
      @Bacteriophagebs 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @Blake Ubersox Oh, I see. But Alaskan bear hunters and guides don't care about reliability, which is why they DO use autoloaders and lever-actions, and those guns are illegal in Africa because they're not reliable enough, so the governments outlawed them for the hunters' own safety? And the various, expensive, "assisted straight-pull" bolt guns are also much more reliable than autoloaders, and not just a way to get around the laws? And when every article about big game rifles for Africa says "semi-auto and lever-action rifles are illegal" before explaining why people use bolt-action or double-barrels, it's not actually relevant to the article? Got it.
      You know that bolt-actions are used WAY more often than doubles in Africa, right?
      A better argument would have been "those guns aren't chambered for powerful enough cartridges." It still would have been wrong, though.

      If its stupid and it works, its not stupid. The truly stupid one was the one my Grandad had to fly with, called the Violet club. It was so unstable that its centre was filled with ball bearings. To arm the device, a plastic plug was pulled out and the ball bearings allowed to fall out. Once loaded, the ball bearings had to be removed before engines of the bomber could be turned on (or they would destroy the bomb). The bomb was deemed so unstable that if armed and in the air, it was deemed too dangerous to land with it ; even a hard normal landing would detonate it. Once in the air, it had to be used. They were fitted on Valiants at a time when they, due to being flown hard, fast and low (which kills aircraft in next to no time) had major fatigue issues and were literally falling apart from the stress. The B-47 had similar issues (as would any aircraft). The instability of the bomb meant that crews never flew with it- which considering the thing weighed nearly a ton (and unlike conventional bombs, the weight is very concentrated)- drastically changed the handling of the aircraft. So, for a time, our defence was based on a bomb which had to be used if put in the air, on bombers under heavy strain and falling apart, with crews unexperienced on how to handle the bombers under such loads. Aka, how to accidentally nuke Norway.

      Z M I call this “Hoplophile Dundee”at the gun range a man of African decent is seen cleaning a barrett m107. He is cleaning, and a man in his late teens- early twenties, clearly a /k/ommando, judging by a fawning over his own brownells AR10, gawks at the bolt of the m107 saying “Jimmney crickets! What does that shoot?” The man, speaking in a southern accent says “.50 bmg, sir.” Then near by, a 5’7 lady in her early 30s beckons him over, holding a strange double barreled bolt action rifle, missing its bolt, and a large L shaped indention in her left pocket, and several huge magazines in the pockets of her cargo pants, clearly sweating in the glorious Nevada heat, saying“That’s not a bolt... THHIIISS IS A BOLT!” Bringing to bear a strange thing out of a oil stained pocket, and disappointing the local “weird boy,” a man who currently is experimenting with his strange prototype of what seems to be a AR10 with an AK-107 recoil counterbalance system.

      Callum Turner fair enough, I’m just saying they’re meant to be to things completely. I think the main issue with the set up of a semi-automatic high caliber rifle from what I understand is a shooters preference, some people just don’t like the movement of the action when they’re making follow-up shots. I’ve heard some people say they it has to do with the consistency of the bolt action over semi-auto in that the bolt will always hit the same place. Again I have no clue as to rather or not that’s true but that’s what I’ve always heard.

    • @01ZombieMoses10
      @01ZombieMoses10 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      The "easily achieve 18-22 MPH" is dubious - that's sprinting for mere mortals - and the "can do so for hours" is completely absurd. Unless you actually train as a runner, you cannot continuously run at your *average* run speed for hours. Let's say for the sake of argument that Szecsei has a nice even savanna to run away on - not trapped in a bush surrounded by marshy grass. I will grant you, if he kept his head and didn't just sprint wildly like you know, a frightened person, he could probably keep his distance long enough for the elephants to tire and give up. That is only because they are enormous creatures that take equally enormous energy to move and thus cannot keep up their aggressive chase for a very long time. Again, assuming he kept a cool head and didn't trip trying to save his life in the most expedient way possible, it's feasible he could get away unscathed, assuming he had the forethought to not trap himself with the terrain, flora, other dangerous creatures, etc. Feasible =/= easy.

    • @john-paulsilke893
      @john-paulsilke893 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Sure but the fastest recorded man was 29.5mph vs fastest recorded African elephant was 15.5 close to half. If you are unfit and playing with monsters you are either insane or backed up with some help. Honestly I have walked among elephants on a high fence preserve and they surely look like they are fast but really you can out walk them if you pay attention and keep your head. A light jog for 100 yards or so should do it. If you can’t manage that then may Darwin take you if you are dumb enough to approach. (I also learned Hippos can frigg’n run, at speeds approaching Olympic 800m sprinters). We stayed away from them even though my guide was authorized to show us to them and take up boating. He had earlier lost a fellow guid and two clients less then a month before.

    • @john-paulsilke893
      @john-paulsilke893 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s not about tiring, it’s about overheating. Humans in reasonable fitness can travel at 4-6mph over uneven terrain for 20hrs straight if property motivated. An elephant will need to stop and cool down in less the 4hrs. This is how our ancestors hunted everything. We are physically superior in this way to almost all mammals, especially if you carry a waterskin. Further I have never heard of elephants climbing mountains or scurrying up a steep slope so there’s that and additionally unless it’s a single bull without a babies and other elephants in its group it will no pursue very far so all points are moot. And if it is a single bull, it will give up and abandon its anger quite quickly because you aren’t that important to it and it’s actually quite a smart animal and will see the pointlessness of chasing a dumb human for more then a few minutes.

    • @ianlehman8342
      @ianlehman8342 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, some gun laws would then make that out to be a an "automatic weapon"
      You *could* place a steel block between the triggers, and don't tell anyone you did.
      This would work for really any double barreled firearm with separate triggers, but then you are immediately in constructive possession of an automatic firearm.

    • @jamesharding3459
      @jamesharding3459 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ian Lehman Eh, not quite. Two triggers, under US law, equals two trigger pulls (which is weird, but hey) - hence, legal.

    • @ianlehman8342
      @ianlehman8342 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Apparently, any modification that links two triggers together, such as a block or, other means that will require you to pull one trigger for both rounds, which the law then considers as one trigger pull still falls under an automatic firearm. It's the wrong way to interpret what an automatic firearm is, really.

      Maybe, depends on what the tooling costs or if they are custom made and there is no tooling to mass produce those fine rifles. There was a full-page ad for one of these double-barrel bolt actions, with no price listed. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Many years later, I happened across one in an antique store, also with no price tag. I asked how much for it, and the dealer said, "You can't afford it, kid." (I was 20, so fair enough.) Then, in 2009, that year's Shooter's Bible hilariously listed them for $499, which everyone assumed was a typo for $49,900 or something, and is still the best guess at a price I've ever seen for one of these new.
