- In this video Jay Robarge of Broader Performance will show one of the weakest links in the Ford C4 transmission. He will show how issues with the forward planet assembly are addressed in our transmissions with an explanation as to why they fail in stock trim.
Hi Jay, Want to thank you for taking time out of your day to post these videos. I mainly do GM units. Last month I did a Turbo 350 going into a 9 sec car. Took 5 "working" units to make 1 complete trans I felt comfortable building! Had a guy contact me about a C4 build (800HP) and I asked him how many units he had? "One, from 1965. Shifted great 10 years ago behind the 289 2 bbl" car he got it from was the answer. Nobody gets it! Again THANKS for your insight and I feel your pain!
I think some people dont realize how old this stuff is and very little aftermarket support.
You always have groovy music playing in your shop.
Helps pass the time. I dont work where there is no music.
Thanks for all your videos!
Your welcome
Another great vid, thank you.. Very sensible content as always..
Hahaha best 2-3 flare , I had a guy take me a drive in his big USA brand name C6 he loved, I thought it was the worst lol
Thank you. Unfortunately made in USA isnt always as regal as it once was. Maybe someday we can get back to building with pride again. Lets make American products great again.
Washers go south pinion tears up ring gear jams gear train burns up trans it's a mess thanks for the vids
Exactly. Thanks for watching
Thank you for your videos I went and looked at a spare planetary gear to see how them pins would come out looks like you would have to drill them out
You can actually just take a punch and a hammer and drive the pins out. It just breaks the little roll pins. Its crude but it works.
The GM 200-4R also has the pinion rebuild issue. You can buy the brass & steel washers, but, no one is selling the pins, gears, or needle bearings.
That's another small planet subject to failure. Too bad someone doesn't take this on. I will look into it at some point. I want the pieces made in the USA though. Could be costly.
@@BroaderPerformance From another channel here at TH-cam, the Ford 8F35 apparently, had a run where the pinion needle bearings had a hardness problem. Transmission Digest has a picture of some of the needle plain worn out. You can buy a new planet for $200 for this, but, planet failure tends to trash a lot of other parts on these.
Talking about Chris at CK on the rollerized parking brake I bet! His valve body’s that weren’t copied were trash
Not Chris actually. I think the guy I was referring to is retired now.
Could a few holes be drilled and chamfered along with some grooves in the friction washer?
The washers are too thin to make grooves in. Just groove the gear.
@@BroaderPerformance And that should help shouldn't it?
