I think they used to call it the proportioning valve but everything’s electronic today so it’s called a ABS Control Module/Pump. I’m replacing mine now after replacing the left front caliper which was locked up and still have the same issue. I appreciate your video. Especially the bleeding part and leaving the one brake line opened. Thank you! 👍🏻
Old rubber brake lines can decompose internally and not release the brake pressure. Be sure to factor that before changing out your ABS. Sticking calipers can also cause the brakes to act strangely. Great tip for getting the air out. I am dreading changing out the ABS module on my Mazda 6.
Thank you for taking the time to make is video. Hoping you or someone reading this can advise on my issue. I have a 2014 Honda Accord V6 that dashboard lights up with a few lights(ABS, tire pressure, parking brake, VSD. The local shop did a scan and got codes (81-20 Acceleration sensor, 85-01 problem in VSA system, U1281-00 gauge control module lost communication with MICU, and U0416-68 VSA brake actuator malfunction), Took it to the Honda dealer they said need new ABS unit. Price parts and labor $2400. I saw a couple of videos where they just removed the black module box and sent it for repair(apparently there are services that repair these units for $200-300 and then can reinstall the module. It seems this it not an uncommon failure for Hondas but no recall by Honda. Any options for this repair?
It's best to remove the ABS pump quickly and install it quickly. This will limit the amount of air entering the brake system. To answer the question there is no good way since the brake lines cannot be pinched off unless it is made of rubber.
5:21 thank you I will check this immediately. Swapped an ABS pump and it doesn't do anything. Pulled that top line, and pumped the brakes 30-40 times. fluid on ground but the ABS still screaming at me and not turning on.
I already checked almost everything, the only symptom is only 1 of my rear break drum keeps locking up after gets warm (10mins of driving) I will check on this next.. thanks
Some Toyota DIYers find that after replacing ANY brake part, like pads, their brake pedal is inexplicably low. And no amount of bleeding gets the pedal height back to top. Should an Auto Bleed with a scan tool be done before assuming the cause is the ABS pump?
Great video I have a ABS problem w/ my CVS 3.6 Cadillac, it burnt the module harness and I haven't check it yet but this guy understands them very well I may just change module and pump... along with whatever. THANKS.
Very Useful Thanks I do have and issue Whith Brakes they Overheat and I already Replaced Brake hoses Pads Calipers and Rotors but Rotors are little loose they didn’t fit tide like the Factory ones in a 07 Prius
Great info! Question? Why is there no brake fluid coming out from one of the brake lines? I’ve disconnected the line from the module and absolutely nothing comes out from it. I have verified there is no clogs from the module to the caliper. Thx!
I have a 2007 Xterra 2WD. Back in May, right front caliper locked up due to rust and corrosive. It's been working fine until last month I decided to flush the brake system for the first time after 160k miles. I bled right rear, left rear, right front, then left front using the bleeding pump. At one time, I probably overfilled the brake Master Cylinder then closed the cap and bleed the brake. It had too much pressure that the fluid leaked out from under the cap. I opened the cap and relieve the pressure and cleaned up. After that It feel like the vehicle is dragging. I checked all wheel and found the right front wheel locked up again. I thought the caliper is defective so I exchanged it for a new one w/ Advance Auto Part. Put new one in, bleed and tested the vehicle, the wheel immediately locked up... Then I replaced the hydraulic hose, still locked up. Yesterday I had an assistant to bleed the right front brake again and found NO air in the line. Turned the car on, pump the brake a few times, turn off the car. That right side is locked up again. I wonder what could go wrong? ABS pump? ABS light is NOT on.
Yoyo wuddup bro. Thanks for making the vid. My friend took his 2009 Acura TSX to the dealer and told him he needed a new master cylinder, new front rotors, front right caliper, and brake pads all the way around. I changed the rear pads cuz they were low and the master cylinder. Upon hard braking (panic stop) it’s skids then loss of pedal pressure. ~they turned the vsa button into a kill switch. No warning lights on. Could tampering with the vsa button cause ABS module failure? Any advice would be appreciated
2008 Escape, new master cylinder, good brake pads , no leaks, good booster. Brake pedal bleeds down to floor. No abs light and brake light doesn't come on. Didn't start having problems until I took off from a dead start and spun a wheel which the traction control light came on. Didn't have brake pedal when i went to stop I had to really pump them. Got home, shut it off, pumped the brakes up hard and then they worked, until I spun a wheel again. Same thing.
Man I have replaced almost everything on my 09 Kia optima. It will be fine for several weeks and then all of a sudden my front passenger side brake will lock onto the rotor and get to the point to where it’s no longer drivable. I started out by replacing the caliper then I replaced the brakes. I replaced the master cylinder. I also just replaced the brake booster and it’s still doing it. My question to you is if it’s only one that’s locking up do you think it could possibly be the ABS? I was going to buy brake line for that side today and replace that in hopes that it would work but I wanted to see if I could get a reply from you first. Thank you.
Good question. The ABS module is the computer used to process inputs from various sensors such as the wheel speed sensor and the ABS pump is the mechanical part to control hydraulic pressure in the brake system.
The one for the air bleeding, is it the return line of the brake fluid? Cant really see from the video which one is the one that need to left unscrew for the air bleeding. Thanks

Hey just ran into your video. I know it’s two years late but I have a question. I have a 2006 Chevy Tahoe Joe Gibbs edition the 5.3 L V8 with the Hydro boost brake system, but my brakes are going all the way to the floor and there’s some kind of like brake light on track control light, and some kind of warning on the dash, but you think that could be the ABS module as well. I don’t have any leaks. I checked for leaks. I don’t have any brake leak.
I bought a 2012 civic. With front en damage. The ABS pump got push back and bent the lines. When I drive it and it gets to 9 miles break lock up. Abs, steering . Tpms and Vsa lights on.
Have another question for you. I sent my ABS module in to ECU place they said it was bad so they sent me another repaired one. my mechanic put it in, but he couldn’t get it. Scanned to my car It said Vin numbers don’t match. I’m now taking it to Ford Do you think Ford will have any problems programming it to my car.? My ABS lights are on on my dashboard now. I’m hoping the ECU guy didn’t scare me. Car runs fine brakes work OK no leaks. Have you ever heard of this before??
Just to disconnect my ABS and take it off the car and sent it in to be tested do I need to bleed my brakes? I know I need to bleed my brakes when i put my ABS back on to get the air out of the lines.
First sign was abs pumping all of a sudden in a stop. Then just felt weak pedal and tautness in the pressure. But weaker and weaker ability to stop. They say the code is abs pump module failure. $1,000. To fix. Can I just disable the ABS fuse? Wheel shakes. Never used to. Got any cars for sale? Thank you.
I have a 2006 GMC Sierra after replacing the brake pads the brakes would slowly start locking up as we went down the road. We replaced calipers we replaced Master cylinder. We bled the entire system. We replace brake lines and hoses. Still happening. Can the ABS module do this?
Did you find the problem? You mentioned that you replaced the master cylinder. Did you make sure that the push rod that fits in the hole in the back of the master cylinder was adjusted to the correct length? If it is too long, it won't allow your calipers to retract, thus applying the brakes slightly and causing them to heat up. An easy check is to place your hand on the brake pedal and see if you have any travel in your brake pedal. But if it was doing this before you changed your master cylinder, you can probably rule this out. I would say that it could be the ABS module. You definatly have something restricting the brake fluid from going back to the master cylinder if it is doing it on all 4 wheels . Just wanted to pass this along ,since I had this problem once. Good luck.
Im sending my abs module out for repair i wanted to know where or what should i do with my brake lines once i remove them from the abs module do i have to plug them some way or just tie them together??
Well a lot of dealers are discontinuing parts, and these modules are now hard to find, at best you can find a used one that has to be programmed to a vin. All in the effort to put us in electric cars, jobs will be lost big time because of these changes.

Hi Top5 I have a Merc sprinter 416 2005 auto . I test drove the vehicle and found the break peddle went slowly all the way to the floor, so i assumed that it was the master cylinder , replaced the master cylinder , bled the system with the engine and ignition off and the peddle was hard and constant . I started the vehicle and the peddle then went to the floor same as before , with the ignition off the peddle is hard and constant , with the ignition on the peddle goes to the floor . Is this a falling ABS unit ? Thanks
Hello, got a Yaris 2013 hybrid and the rear driver side brake keeps holding, pads got wear out and it’s making constant contact, had the calliper change but still makes contact was told it mind be the abs pump. No warning lights on dash and other brakes are fine just one giving problem. Could it be the pump ? And does a replacement used pump needs programming ? Or is it better to repair the current pump?
I just bought this 2004 Suburban and I noticed the brake/ABS plug underneath the front passenger seat was unplugged. Soon as I plugged it up the 2 front brakes passenger /driver started dragging. I wonder if the previous owner unplugged the plug for that reason. To release the brakes I opened up the bleeder screw. And when I changed the brakes both passenger/driver side brakes was to the metal. Can having the ABS plugged up cause the brakes to drag? Leaving it unplugged will it help stop the dragging?
did you ever figure out if that was the problem. several people are having problems with the front brakes dragging on these trucks. changing all the lines calipers rotors master cylinder and brake booster and still locking up and not one video about how to fix it or saying it's the Abs pump.
What about when you try to bleed the lines and one line is not bleeding the line was disconnected at the caliper and not bleeding took it off at the abs pump and it’s not bleeding

I keep taking my car to Midas for new brakes but after the second time, Midas brake company told me to take my car back to the dealership and tell them my ABS is malfunctioning and causing my calipers to tear thru my pads just about every 3 months. Might have a brake proportioning valve on that vehicle. It is designed to seal off part of the system if brake line breaks. It can become engaged when bleeding brakes. Probably many videos on how to disengage it on GM vehicles. There is a little screw in tool usually, but can be done without it.

I have taken it off and on and it seems to still leak on top of the ABS module.. do you think there’s air in the line or what could be the problem?. Please help
Hi, I belive my prius 2007 needs this pump replaced, do you know a good place where I can get this done on orange county california?
Hi Top5 I have a Merc sprinter 416 2005 auto . I test drove the vehicle and found the break peddle went slowly all the way to the floor, so i assumed that it was the master cylinder , replaced the master cylinder , bled the system with the engine and ignition off and the peddle was hard and constant . I started the vehicle and the peddle then went to the floor same as before , with the ignition off the peddle is hard and constant , with the ignition on the peddle goes to the floor . Is this a falling ABS unit ? Thanks
Did you bench bleed the master cylinder prior to installation?
@@Top5AutoRepairs . No I did on the vehicle at the master cylinder and then at the wheels .
Excellent video. Cheers.
Good job
Hello,
got a Yaris 2013 hybrid and the rear driver side brake keeps holding, pads got wear out and it’s making constant contact, had the calliper change but still makes contact was told it mind be the abs pump.
@@BeauNeeley master cylinder fixed my problem.
Great video thank you
Great tips and video kudos!
Is it necessary to ABS light turn ON for wheel locked up?
Thnk you, very helpfull.
What about when you try to bleed the lines and one line is not bleeding the line was disconnected at the caliper and not bleeding took it off at the abs pump and it’s not bleeding
I have a 2000 honda Acura and I can't seem to find line to go back into the main line to the abs
this is the best video on this system thanks
Hi, i have a ford fiesta 2009 model. I got p0500-00 and C0031-07 fault. It says front left sensor but i have already changed it and bearing as well but still got same problem. On diagnotic tool the speed shows 0km/h. Can this be the wiring or abs module?

I have a 2015 Honda Civic Si coupe that starts, I drive it about 30 minutes I turn it off and it doesn't start, I just wait 30 minutes or 1 hour and it starts again. Could it be the ABS pump?
My problem is I keep having to get my brakes repaired about every 3 months. I keep taking my car to Midas for new brakes but after the second time, Midas brake company told me to take my car back to the dealership and tell them my ABS is malfunctioning and causing my calipers to tear thru my pads just about every 3 months. I’ve had so many problems with my Chevrolet Equinox. My car dealership tried to tell me it wasn’t my ABS but I don’t believe them, so I’m taking my car to a different GM dealership because every time I keep having to get new calipers, pads, etc. I’m so frustrated!
So what did the stealership say the problems was?
How long does it take to replace one?
Am having deep trouble with my ABS pump
How does it after the gear ??
Great video
I got my ABS unit repaired. I put it back in. Everything went real smooth but once I started pumping the brakes brake fluid came out of the first line on my ABS unit. I’ve taken it on and off a few times put it back still leaking does not feel stripped out. Do you think it’s air in the lines? What do you suggest please help
If it leaks fluid , it definitly will be getting air in the system.
@@dougsanders6034 I got that fix but the right rear wheel still peels out on right hand turns fish tales all over the place when the road is wet coming out of right hand turns only. Have no idea what it is. It’s been at Ford for two weeks and they don’t have a clue either. They’re just guessing now.
Got it back from the dealer and they’re telling me it’s my vacuum pump that is making the right rear tire spin out. I find that hard to believe a vacuum pump can do that?
Very helpful
Very useful, .thank you,.
You ever see abs pump cause brakes to stick on lightly and prevent flow of fluid to the rear brakes etc
Hello good afternoon

Hi Top 5, your new subscriber. I need your help. In my motorbike with dual channel ABS, on the dashboard, there is no ABS indicator malfunction, yet front braking is poor, it takes more distance to stop. And the rear brake locks up on hard braking. What could be wrong. Any advise is appreciated.
i got a 1997 buick lesabre. Was my grandparents car. Brakelines failed, had all new brakelines installed. Now it has NO pressure to the front brakes. 1 person said the dump valve inside the pump is stuck open. Im lost.
Might have a brake proportioning valve on that vehicle. It is designed to seal off part of the system if brake line breaks. It can become engaged when bleeding brakes. Probably many videos on how to disengage it on GM vehicles. There is a little screw in tool usually, but can be done without it.
hi mate i changed my accumulator and now the abs and alarm wont turn of and the put to fill it starts for a 20 seconds then stops, then starts again on and of from pump to accumulator any idea whats happen to me 4x4 lol

Hello Sir,
I need your help very much.
Abs pump failed in my Toyota Prius 2010 nhw20 since more than 2 months.
I've purchased an abs pump actuator 44510-47050 three times.
Every times after being placed, it wasn't functioning.
My car tech has tried all possible.
I don't understand what's the issues.
Are the spare parts I've purchased are all defective.
Please Sir, can you get me such a used fully functioning spare part and also grant your help to guide my car tech to resolve the abs malfunctioning issues.
Awaiting your reply patiently.
They're not defective. Air is trapped in the ABS pump/Actuator. You may need a scan tool from Toyota to bleed it.
@@Top5AutoRepairs Thanks loads Sir for your reply.
My car tech has his scan tool.
How must he do the bleed to remove air?
My car's brake peddle is very spongy even after air bleeding the system. Could there be still air stuck in the ABS pump?
The master cylinder is probably failing
@@Top5AutoRepairs I've replaced it twice! Still spongy. I've also replaced the brake rotors and pads.
Make sure to bleed the brakes on a 4 wheels. Start from the back wheels and work your way to the front closet to the master cylinder.
@@Top5AutoRepairs that's exactly what I did! Still nothing :( . So, could there be air in the ABS module it self?
Try power bleeding it. Force air in the master cylinder to push all the air out. This will require an air compressor.
