      just like in Chess and the pawns
      that is exactly how you make them relevant
      which is a good thing, to not just make players think "is the weakest unit, why use it"
      by giving them much more roles than just blasting through

    Can't wait for the mechs episode. Probably my favorite unit.
    Some more infantry facts.
    Infantry are the kings of luck damage because luck damage is just about having as many rolls as possible. This makes them one of the most cost efficient units. 16 infantry will easily swarm and kill a medium tank through luck damage, although in practice this isn't feasible to actually do at all. This may fail on tanks and AA though, which cost a lot less than md tanks but take similar amounts of luck damage.
    Infantry basically do no damage to vehicles. It's practically all luck damage. So attacking a tank or neotank, it's mostly the same damage because it's just the luck portion of the damage getting through. This has a side effect of making Nell the best infantry CO in some situations, because Sami and Sensei for instance will not get a damage increase, because increasing 1% by 30% is basically nothing. Luck COs however ignore vehicle armor.
    In normal gameplay, infantry don't really counter any unit except mechs, which is always a good trade cost efficiency wise if you can first strike. This is rather unfortunate for the already hard-to-use mechs because infantry are so ubiquitous on every map.
    With infantry, one has to consider a sometimes overlooked resource in the game: factory time. See, in a roundabout way, if we don't account for factory time, theoretically infantry actually counter teched land units like neotanks at least on paper. If your 1k infantry can do 1 luck damage to a neotank, it's simply a cost efficient trade against the 22k neotank. In practice yes it would often be an awful idea, because you have to consider factory time as an extra cost to infantry. If we suppose that a match lasts 20 turns and we have 3 factories, that gives us exactly 60 units of factory time to spend throughout the game, and how we divide this time up with regards to our funds throughout the match becomes most important with infantry. We can't just swarm 15 infantry to kill a neotank even if it's cost effective fundwise because we would be trading like 30% of our total allotted factory time for the entire game against 1 neotank, or a trade of 15 factory time units for 1 factory time unit.
    This is why you must also always build infantry every turn unless you have a very specific need not to, or else it's just throwing away factory time.
    Also, I may have just made all of this up randomly whilst high on Sami wallpapers.

      They should definitely be a majority of the army, but the question is how much? I would argue that the amount of infantry you have should be based on the board size. Factory time is something that should be taken into account, but so should your tech. A good rule of thumb is if you don't know what to build then infantry can't hurt.

      Generally about yes, but often the odds are lower than that since terrain defence and attacker HP affect the luck damage. A 7HP unit attacking a unit on a city will only inflict half of the potential luck damage (0.7x0.7=0.49).

      yeah I too thought it was like that
      until yesterday that I was playing dual strike and chose Nell, and I was like "okay how exactly does her luck work, cuz I heard luck also decreases dmg at a chance" and find out luck has actually been a mechanic since forever, hidden and the cause of damage being so varied. And that is also different across COs.
      like back in 2010 when my bros said Flak had a chance to deal less dmg or more
      I thought that was all what Luck was about (and thought Nell was also that way)
      turns out, while yes luck is the cause of the dmg decrease/increase on flak, it's also much more complicated than just a chance and the bad luck is not presented on Nell at all
      about 16 years or so since I first knew this game and to these days Im still learning new things about it

    It's interesting that playing through the campaign will usually give the impression that infantry are somewhat minor, since there is usually a lot more predeployed resources and a lot less contesting property (most property is very clearly set up to be captured or very much not). Most competitive maps seem to focus a lot more on the property contest across the map though. I think that's part of why newer players that just learned the game through the campaign can have a skewed view of the value of many units.

    • @kingarthur3236
      @kingarthur3236 3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      I actually think the biggest reason is not the map design but it's the fact that you're facing the AI
      Even on maps without many pre deployed forces the AI will never spam infantry so you don't really need to do so yourself, you can just build vehicles and the AI will suicide their units into them for free value.
      It's only when you start going up against players that keep their units safe and just absolutely overwhelm you with seas of infantry that you realize that you need to build a lot of infantry so you can combat their infantry spam
      After all the biggest reason why spamming infantry is so powerful is that the only counter to it is to also spam Infantry

    • @TheEmperorGulcasa
      @TheEmperorGulcasa 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@kingarthur3236 I think this is partly true, but the AI is also designed that way for the game's maps and their usually predeployed forces. The AI gets more units to start usually, but less eventual economy or production. So if the AI were programmed to spam infantry, their usually lower base count would likely leave them in a bad spot.
      Also, hordes of infantry end up being less useful in like choke point city, where most of the fighting is concentrated in one spot. Most campaign maps don't have lots of different objectives of equal priority and instead have a single big objective or a string of objectives to go through. The infantry ocean is a lot more important for map presence in a more open map with lots of different fronts to contest and property to grab at once.

    • @AdmiralTails
      @AdmiralTails 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@TheEmperorGulcasa The AI point remains true in the war room and vs. mode against AI though, which can help enforce that lower infantry playstyle.

    • @ziljin
      @ziljin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@AdmiralTails infantry and transports are more useful in war room. The ai is scripted to move out slowly and capture closest cities one by one. So you can exploit that behavior and send your transports to capture distant bases and airports before the AI does.

    • @TheEmperorGulcasa
      @TheEmperorGulcasa 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@AdmiralTails I mean, you compare the war room maps to anything Mangs plays on for AWBW, and you can see the game creator's design philosophy for how vs maps should be played and how the community ended up making maps is pretty different. Also, the AI is just kinda simple and dumb. I don't think a very challenging AI to train people for pvp was ever high on the developer's list of priorities.

      In standard competitive map, Infantry spam is seen every day in early game (unless the player is playing a gambit or doesn't know to play competitively), they also exist in mid game and late game in order not to lose units by walling; scouting; potensial income that gained though vehicle, air or rarely naval fights. In campaigns and war rooms, they kinda suck ass unless the map is very close to a competitive map (2-4 bases for each player and maybe 0-2 airports or mutliples ports, no pre-deployed army, actual contested city, symetrical maps, etc.). So balance them in 2 different maps type is impposible unless you make the comptitive map and balance around it THEN put them in campaign / war rooms map.

    When you attacked that Medium Tank with 3 infantry... that's not what I would do, with an artillery in range. I'd just move the infantry there without attacking, because, with the mountain behind it, the Medium Tank would be trapped there. And, depending on the damage rolls, it'd only be able to injure/kill one of the infantry before it's destroyed, assuming another vechicle doesn't come to it's rescue, as opposed to weakening several of your infantry to do what's basically chip damage.
    Also, I would say join-capping is generally always worth it. Unless the infantry you're joining have bigger units harassing them, that could then gang up with the infantry on your capping units. But in most cases, since you get 1000 per day from the properties, the investment with pay itself back once you get the property, and then will continue to pay itself off many times over in the coming turns.

    • @kingarthur3236
      @kingarthur3236 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think specially in the example shown in the video join capping is not worth at all for two reasons
      1. Losing units is never good, like those 6hp infantry could in the future not only block stuff but finish off low HP infantry that the opponent is using to block stuff
      2. I think join capping is especially bad when the capture was interrupted by an infantry because what you could do instead is just shoot on it with your full health one. Like if you pulled all 6hb and Country back and sharp with his he would have done a lot of damage, like if you can do a lot of damage to your opponent's infantry and get a Advantage you're going to capture the city eventually and probably for less cost.
      Honestly I would only join cap if
      1: I will either 100% get the property or I will force my opponent to distract an important vehicle shooting on it
      2. I wont easily get that property later anyways
      3. won't get good value by just moving the Infantry away and shooting on something from the city
      If all of these circumstances are met then I think it's a good idea the majority of the time

I'd love to learn more about the fundimental applications of times to build mechs and how this differs to times when I'd rather just be building infantry.
    I also want to ask a specific question about active missle silos. I often see in the rare instances they are present that a lot of people like to pop them earlier for help in engagements, usually before the first wave of CO powers come into play. I see a lot of potential late game for them but do not know how risky getting your silo swiped from me when I'm not using it is. I suppose it's first and foremost map dependant but otherwise is there an established meta on techniques for missle silos?

    It hurt my soul to watch the join cap demo. I know it was for effect, but the actual play there is to shoot and that doesn’t interrupt the cap value, and then join everyone back to 10, with 10 capture left. This makes those 7 hp infantry into 2 or 3 hp infantry that would suicide on attempted continued attacks. So if they fall back, same capture speed with an extra 12 hp of infantry dead, or an extra 21 hp of infantry dead, a 3 unit advantage, and one turn delayed capture (edit: the second option, everything after the “or,” is to specify what happens if they don’t fall back and attack. There are permutations of what happens next, but they are all better then what happens if you do it like the video shows). Heals to full the next turn though if they spread out the attacks to delay all three, and those 7s are still around in your demo version of tactics. You’ll get more damage and a tougher fight.

    In cases where I only have one unit that can attack a Mech, I am not really a fan of attacking full health Mechs on cities with my Infantry unless I can do so from a city or mountain. I'd rather attack an Infantry on a forest or even city than attack a Mech in a city even if I can do so from a forest. The only exception is if a city is being capped and has exactly 10 points. If a Mech is sitting on a city but didn't cap because it was attacking a unit, I'd rather attack something else. If a city has 7 or less points and an enemy is sitting there with a full health Mech due to joint capping, again I'd rather attack something else. If the Mech is the only thing the infantry can attack and I can't do something like attack an enemy Infantry or Artillery, then I'll begrudgingly attack said Mech. Otherwise if a city is at 8, 9, or 10 points (or anything higher, but the odds of a city being at 15 points with a full health mech on it are a tad low), I'll just have the infantry do something else. When you attack a Mech on a city or mountains, the counterattack just hits pretty darn hard unless you're doing something like attacking with a bomber where it can't retaliate. An exception to this is if there is a follow-up unit. For example, if I can attack a Mech on a city by starting with an Infantry and following that up with a Recon or Mech, I'll be happier to do so. Against Sonja or Sami, I don't even bother attacking their Mechs on cities if I can only do so with 1 unit. The first unit just gets mauled on the counterattack so if a second unit can't followup, I don't think it's worth it. I won't even take a Colin disposable infantry and attack one of their Mechs on a city, not even to interrupt a cap.

    Infantry are like pawns on the chess board just as any cannon fodder in a strategy game. How valuable can that really be? Well, everyone seems to have a favorite piece, but the truth is that the pawn structure dictates which piece is the most dominate in the current position. Meaning that sometimes even the queen could have a harder time being useful over a knight. I don't know if the concept can be fully applied to advance wars, but it just goes to show how strong they can really be.
    If that doesn't convince you then consider this. Without infantry you are practically playing pre-deployment and your decisions each turn could cost you the game, but forming a structure with infantry allows you to play more practical rather than precise and now your opponent is the one that needs to be careful. This is because it would be easier to gain a positive trade when the enemy is targeting the cheapest unit in the game with some of the most expensive. You are almost certain to multiple the value.

    Edit: oh sorry I did not know he said it at 3:55.

      He did go over vision range. I'm sorry to say I wont be going back over the video to find you a time stamp.
      Edit: I had the video open earlier today while on break, I made this reply when I was home so I didn't have the comments refreshed to see that others already gave the time.

    7:35 "When they attack vehicles they don't do well." Sir. That was literally an even exchange, 700 funds of infantry for "700" funds of tank. Except that hit brought the tank to 8.6 or so, so the next hit is clearly going to be worth 1400 funds of tank. Also, the second hit will leave you with a 5 HP infantry left over. I know you needed to use those other units to engage the indirects to show that off and whatnot, but you undersold how well that engagement and a followup engagement would have actually been. Sure, the tank could kill the 3 HP still, but then it has to hang in the fight, and risk more infantry surrounding it. Two infantry hitting the tank without you having local support is an immediate fall back condition.

      While this is true, the tank was also on a road, and the better the tank's defenses, the worse this matchup will be, since more remaining HP means more return firepower; further, you're trading board presence to break even on funds in this example.
      If the tank were lower on HP and there were multiple infantry, especially with defensive terrain, it would be a better matchup, as demonstrated on the Md.Tank.

      Also you have to consider that using a base is part of the cost for ground units. While the tank is still mostly functional, the infantry is basically gone.

      I was never a fan of DOR. Not because of gameplay or anything its just dark and foreboding while the AW before it was lighthearted even though it was technically war. I really dont think it should have been called AW because its almost a completely different game. But thats my opinion.

      @@picallo1 It's actually the best of the series. The only one where the computer isn't a cheating bastard in Fog of War! It also has more units like Bikes, Carriers & Seaplanes. Even the Battleships are improved as the only indirect attack unit that can move & attack on the same turn.

      @@Animebryan2 That may be but I still dont have any interest. Like I said the lighthearted tone is gone all of our beloved CO's are gone. Im good.

    Mighty Egg of Wisdom, might your excellency be willing to teach us, petty humans, about the stealth fighter? I insist they are underpowered for their cost, but people on internet is amused by them.
