    The Md Tank is a frustratingly well balanced unit. When you're losing to them, it feels so powerful. But when you're using them recklessly, it feels so vulnerable

      @@richard35791 I have to disagree on some points, I almost never have problems with the md tanks fuel, and a lot of times you won’t be able to produce neotanks every turn, probably because competitive AW maps are designed around it, and md tanks are also better then neotanks in the sense that you can send them at rockets too take them down more cost effectively then neotanks, while their defensive power is almost the same

Turns out I wasn't even above average once I finally found the PVP scene. It's the same for me with Advance Wars! I never thought I would be great, but I thought I could at least hold my own. "You will never get to surround a Md. Tank with Mechs" ~ Mangs before getting a Md. Tank surrounded by Mechs in a future stream

      Itll be a samy or adder during their super power.

    • @alex_zetsu
      @alex_zetsu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I've actually seen Medium Tanks get attacked by 3 Mechs on the same turn without Sami or Adder's power on AWBW. It happens multiple times, but I had to watch a lot. It seems to only happen after turn 50 and it doesn't happen often. I guess if the game drags on that long without either side getting the deceive edge, someone figures "hey, the tanks I'm sending to the front sometimes have to wait" and it always happens in fog of war. I'm still waiting for someone to actually get completely surrounded by Mechs. Well, if people almost surround Medium Tanks with Kanbei, Jess (With Mechs?), Andy, Drake, Adder, and Sami without a power turn, maybe someone somewhere pulled off that completely surrounding one.

    • @LCTesla
      @LCTesla ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With sami's or adder's super power it's not even that strange, considering then they have almost the same mobility as medium tanks. you just need a lot of them in one place (i.e. mountainous choke point) and an MD tank that rolls into the trap.

    You can just save funds to tech up even if your income isn’t high enough. Waiting until you have 18-20k income to tech up is too slow. Don’t build a Med Tank if it’ll leave your bases empty, but save for one if it’ll give you an advantage against, for example, 3 tanks.

    • @KopperNeoman
      @KopperNeoman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Egg also said that Neos hard counter Middies - maybe out of fog, but in fog they're definitely a soft counter. A first strike on a Neo wins you the cost battle.

      I like to liken it to a tactic in Counter Strike ('eco round') where you deliberately underbuy on weapons and equipment for one round to save up and make a big push in the next one.
      In AW the principle is the same, though instead of trading away a round point you instead trade a little bit of momentum since you spent less on units for a day.

    • @alex_zetsu
      @alex_zetsu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Honestly if I wanted a Medium tank for some reason and I couldn't afford one immediately, I'd go Mech + Mech + Mech 70% of the time, sometimes Mech + Recon + Infantry, and on very rare occasions Mech + Mech + Infantry. More often, I'm building stuff like tanks and battlecoptors and chuck in a Medium tank occationally when I'm at the 19K income mark (as in I accidentally had the money instead of deliberately saving for one). If both sides are in the 13K income range and the other guy rolled out a Medium tank, odds are high I have rule over everywhere in the map except for where that thing is since my regular tanks are running amock. I've actually been able to get first strikes with Mechs (as in the slowest unit in the game) on people who make a Medium tank this early, although this might be more because people who build one tank and then save up to go straight to Mediums might actually be weaker players than me and not because Mechs are a good counter to Medium tanks. Mechs do not counter Medium tanks well. If a medium tanks is 2 or 3 tiles away from a base and blocked by a friendly unit that is expendable (an infantry or perhaps a 3 HP unit like a tank), then a Mech becomes a good counter since he'll either kill the roadblock and then your Mech walks forward and takes his shot on your turn or he'll go around and trap himself on the Mech. A Mech's cost is the 3000G plus the opportunity cost of the time to get into position, which in this case is nothing. Infantry + Infantry + Infantry is almost always the wrong move when you're saving up for a medium and the other guy has at least 3 tanks in the middle of the map... which is ironic since early on infantry + infantry + infantry is the right way to go.

      'Medium Tank' is mostly an artefact name at this point, in the original Famicom Wars (I think) they actually WERE the medium tank compared to light tanks and heavy tanks. Then heavy tanks got cut for Advance Wars and for some reason light tanks were renamed just Tanks while Medium Tanks stayed the same.
      IMO they should have kept the Light Tank name and renamed Medium Tanks to Main Battle Tanks or something to that effect, that would have been closer to what a modern armoured military loadout looks like.

    Md tanks are interesting because they don't really do anything new compared to previous units, no flying, no supplying, no high vision, or ranged attacks, so when deciding whether you should make one it comes down to "when do I want to spend on this rather than a regular tank?" Low movement and low vision are less important on defense so I believe they are easier to use defensively. Used offensively it's more of a long-term investment like a rocket or something, like your md tank may or may not reach the situation it was hoping for when it finally reaches the area you sent it to several turns ago.

      I think in practice, they do do something different. They displace the environment, basically put pressure on the opponent make him either raise the stakes to deal with your medium tank with one of his own, or try blocking, evasive or luring procedures to deal with the tank. It's a way of throwing a wrench in his plans

    • @asaltedpudding4041

    I think it is worth mentioning that if you see Md Tank, you don't panic buy a neo tank. Just build arty or a MD tank of your own. It's a noob trap to go for the neo as an immediate response because it is very easy for 2 MD tanks to shut down a neo. If you're struggling against a Md tank, it is very likely that you are over extending as well and need to pull back.

    I always somewhat disliked medium tanks due to campaign. They tended to get stuck in forest patches, failed to get into chokes before eating artillery or something and often didn't secure ohkos necessary to breach fortified lines. I tended to just save for neos who could keep up with the front line better. Those large terrain blobs and heavily fortified central chokes are less of a feature of competitive maps though.
    I do find it interesting that they significantly reduced medium tank prices in DoR, but also cut back the power and armor a fair bit making it more of a true middle ground tank to the heavier war tank. Something that does still have a strong advantage 1v1 vs a tank, but which isn't invalidating if outnumbered.

      I do favor Neotanks for distant bases or breaking lines when I have a ton of money. Though sometimes, it helps to have that Medium Tank+Artillery that you can buy for the same cost of a Neotank. Or if you have the bases, a Medium tank, APC, and infantry.

      The competitive metagame has really substantially overvalued tanks in general, and has massively undervalued higher tech units and even ranged units. This is largely because vision is not priced into the value of a unit, and fog generally favors a higher unit count. Add in greatly limited turns thing and a lack of chokepoints means most strategies simply don't have the time to scale up and work. Grit for example is one of the most pound for pound efficient CO's in the game when there are ample chokepoints, but in the wide open maps of AWBW his strategies just break.

For perspective you start with a MMR of around 800, and he is barely going even at his current skill level and this is despite having played nearly 250 competitive games and has some pretty sketchy losses, including losing to sub 800 players with less than 50 games of experience.

    I am looking forward to your video about neo-tanks. How I mostly use them is as a pushing tool. When I'm in the lead I use them to keep applying pressure. Since they can often one-shot units that medium tanks can't and also their extra mobility and supplies means they can keep on pushing for much longer. When you want to keep applying pressure the low mobility of the medium tank can be quite a hinderance and not finishing off one or two units can mean the difference in halting your momentum.
    I am a Colin main so I usually make medium tanks to grind as I build up my fortune and when I have build it up I switch to neo-tanks for the big push.

  • @TheBikeOnTheMoon

    one thing I would like to point out is that in Day of Ruin 2 tanks / 2 merchs can easily cripple a medium tank no problem because tanks and merchs got firepower buff and tanks will always strike first with more movement range while merchs are even cheaper with 2k5 fund. However, they also reduced the cost of medium tank to 12k to balance, so that's nice

      MD tanks firepower/defense got nerfed. Not tanks got a buff. MD tanks only cost 12k in DoR. Which is good because the difference between a md tank and tank in the first 3 games is just too big. Now you can defeat a md tank using your own tanks reliably.

    • @TheBikeOnTheMoon
      @TheBikeOnTheMoon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      as far as I can tell, you can still trade ok with 3 tanks vs 1 Wartank but not reccommmended. And because wartank only has 4 movement points and get hard countered by anti-tank, it has worse value than medium tank from older games for the same 16k. It's better to spend on 2 tanks + 1 infantry than 1 war tank imo.

    Another thing with md tank vs neotank, they start to become weak offensively when neotank start to become the central unit of the game (very lategame or High Fund match aka 2K gold per property).

      The best thing about medium tanks is that they are worth about 2,5 normal tanks but still only take up 1 square of space. So when you have a big economy they allow you to concentrate your resources into a much smaller area to push much harder. I actually think Colin uses medium tanks better than Jess though. Medium tanks brought down in price and payed for by gold rush can be a mainstay and for colin defense is key.
      I am a Colin main and my main strategy is always defense, defense, defense. Gold rush is a relative increase so the bigger your wealth is the stronger it becomes. So focus exclusively on defense and actually don't spend your first 2 or 3 gold rushes. Instead pocket the money for the next gold rush. That way by the 5th you usually have almost 50.000 which means 25.000 just like that. I usually pocket half of that and keep it up. By the time my fortune reaches over 100.000 I just build a flood of neo-tanks backed by rockets and bombers and steamroll the enemy. Colin's units have reduced firepower but not reduced defense so the medium tank is perfect for him. It's still strong enough to disable any tank it shoots at and it's very hard to quickly get rid off when on a property or forest.

  • @alex_zetsu
    @alex_zetsu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    9:03, I'd argue Mechs are a soft counter to Medium tanks. They're not a very good counter since they are too slow. However, a Medium tank is often kind of blind after you take out Recons (which happens often), so one vs 1 with the Mech striking first can happen despite the Medium tank being faster. Does that accomplish much? Well, no not really. Although it is cost-effective, the Mech player has a silent opportunity cost in getting the Mech to move far from his base, so probably not. How about 4 Mechs against a Medium tank? Well that works wonders, but Mechs are too slow to have that happen much. I've seen that maybe three times against humans ever. There are two reasons mechs are an effective soft counter. One is simply acting as a roadblock so the Medium tank is distracted and maybe you can strike elsewhere perhaps slipping a Recon behind his lines, although infantry are faster and therefore better as roadblocks. the other is that while 4 Mechs vs a medium tank almost never happens, you can get something almost as good. As I described in the Mech video (go see Mang's Mech video, it's a good watch), often times you'll see a Medium tank on the road in range of two Mechs and a tank (the tank is easier since it moves faster). Depending on the terrain, this can be an excellent trade. If you can first strike with a Mech from a city (even an enemy city) it will get the 3-star protection of the city from the medium tank's strongest attack. The next Mech can take more bite out of the Medium tank, and if your tank can attack from even plains, by the time the medium tank makes its counterattack, it will be weak enough your damage suffered is minimal. I've also had battlecoptor + Mech + Tank gang up on medium tanks before. This obviously works best when the other side is approaching your units than the other way around.

    Random question, Mangs.
    What's your opinion on the Unit Merge? Ie, bringing the 2HP and 5HP tanks together to build a 7HP one?
    I've learned a lot from your series of videos, but I don't think I've ever seen you use that utility *ever*. Is it just always better to have that extra position blocker as opposed to guaranteeing a kill?

    • @Insulted25
      @Insulted25 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not Mangs, but joining isn't usually a good idea. More bodies on the field is usually better. A 1hp infantry can still be a meatshield, climb a mountain to give you +3 vision, hide in a forest to trap enemies, etc. Forgoing all those options to give +1 hp to another infantry is not a good move unless it will help that infantry cap a property 1 turn sooner or something like that (even then, it might be better used as a shield for the capping infantry). Also if the opponent wants to get rid of that 1hp infantry they have to dedicate a unit's entire turn to kill it.
      It also depends on the unit you're joining. Joining a 3hp tank to a 7hp on on the front lines might be a good idea to top it off so it has more defense as a 3hp tank is close to useless and probably isnt worth healing. Joining transport units is obviously a terrible idea.
      Notice I used a lot of phrases like 'usually' and 'might be' because it depends on the situation, but as a good rule of thumb I would make sure you have a very good reason to join units and never do it by reflex.

    Medium tank is kind of a misleading name especially in AW 1 and 2. A more appropriate name would be heavy tank. The megatank in dual strike also is such a niche unit that it doesn't really count. I do like what they did in DOR with making the megatank so much cheaper but also making it appropriately weaker. That way you have a light tank, a medium tank and a heavy tank.
    with that said I sometimes don't really like the sense of AW 1+2 reboot. I would much rather have a new AW game that build off of DOR. Maybe with a slightly lighter tone but try balancing it further. Maybe make AT a little easier to deal with and make bikes cost 3,5k instead of 2,5k, they should be made stronger too but it still would be a nerf since you can't spam them as easily.

Then you dont open tank or recon, but save a turn money whilst building infantry. So then you build medium tank. In theory it counters any other opener, and you Just have to stay alive for a couple of turns and the take the beating on your infantry.
