  • The plaintiff bought a car from the defendant. He claims the defendant told him the car was in great shape, but he was duped. He’s suing for his money back. The defendant argues the plaintiff test drove the car and loved it. He refuses to return any payment.

Yep, you absolutely can. I have one, and when my "check engine" light came on, I was able to read the code. I called my mechanic, told him what the code was, and he was able to tell me that it wasn't anything major. He had me clear the code, and it hasn't come back on since. I paid $15.00 for my code reader, and it has saved me hundreds of dollars. Repairs shops charge over $100.00 to plug the reader in and find the code, which is just to find out what the problem is, that doesn't include any repairs. They'll clear the code for you but if you don't write down the code they give you before getting it fixed and it's cleared, you might as well wait until the light comes back on to take it to the repair shop because they're not going to know what was or is wrong with it without the code. Auto Zone will get the code for you for free, but you still need to write it down or don't have it cleared until you have it fixed. If you have any vehicle that puts out codes when something on the dash lights up, and most vehicles on the road today do. You could save yourself a lot of money and trouble by purchasing a code reader that works with the YEAR AND MODEL of your vehicle. They're not a one size fits all product.

Even with that taken into account, his main issue was that he could not prove that the car seller was committing fraud. The plaintiff absolutely needed a mechanic to look at that car before any money passed hands. It sucks honestly, but this was a poor lapse in judgement that he had to pay for. It will likely cost him more money to fix the car and attempt to resell it as well. The defendant in all likelihood knew the car was crap, and I hate people like that. But the plaintiff didn't take any steps to protect himself.

Haha...the story at the end reminds me of: I used to know this old guy from England, John. One day where John worked, a call comes through to the management offices (John was the manager) and the owner of the place picks up the phone...and could be heard saying "Oh..yes sir! Just one moment, your excellency..."- then he turns to John and says in a reverential tone "It's *Lord Blyton* from England, for you!". John takes the phone and casually says "Yeah, Bill. What's up?"....

It's a shame that Adrian's uncle lost this case. If only Adrian learned anything from watching all these videos, like private sales are as-is and that it's cheaper to pay a mechanic $100 than to blindly purchase for a few thousand.

The defendant is a scammer, for he knew he did not have a clear title and the Plaintiff would have a hard time getting the car legally titled and get plates. Conned and scammed.

I'm often astonished by cases on the People's Court where plaintiffs expect a used car, like a 1999 model, to come with the same warranties and features as a new car, and are shocked when it doesn't meet their expectations. Judge Milian frequently advises that everyone should either bring a mechanic or take the car to a mechanic for a $100 check-up to identify any potential issues before purchasing. Typically, private sales don't come with warranties, unlike dealer sales. In this case, the plaintiff spent $4,000 and then decided hours later that the car wasn't worth it. The crucial mistake was signing the title before thoroughly inspecting the vehicle. This individual clearly failed to "think twice and act once," making a poor decision on a car old enough to vote.

You’re buying a used car for $5k. Take it to get it checked out before you buy a used car. If someone clears a code then when you take it to a shop they can tell right away. Get your shit checked out first lol.

Omg this was a horrible decision on the plaintiffs part. Firstly he bought a 22 year old car from out of state for $4,000 😳 without bringing a mechanic look at it first. Secondly, he thought he could register a car and he’s not a resident of the state.
If the car was perfectly fine, why would the person sell it. People will advertise or say anything to get rid of it. He is 100% correct that he has to get an emissions test done and pass before he can get it registered in Georgia, which means he has to immediately put money into it before he can legally drive it. He should’ve drove the car for at least a day before he paid for it.
If there’s one thing that I’ve learned while watching court shows is to bring a mechanic before purchasing new or used cars. Otherwise, if something is wrong, it’s my responsibility simply because it’s an “as is sale.”

False. All you have to do is take the receipt and clean title to a PA tag and title store and they will issue you registration and temporary tags. Then you take that to New Jersey to their DMV and register in New Jersey with the title and you have 60 days. Older dude just didn’t want the car …
