  • Gary Pepper + ELVIS stories. Gary Pepper’s friend Mary Joe Moloney flew from England to Memphis alone as a teen in 1966 where she met Elvis Presley. Let’s hear her stories of what Memphis was like in the 60’s! Thank you, Mary Joe!

I have a picture of my cousin Darlene when she was in college and there is an Elvis poster above her bed. She was born in 1950. She passed away at 63 in 2013. While in college she and her friend would go to the movies. If there was Elvis movies out while they were in college they probably saw those. I think he starred in his last movie in 1969
    - Change of Habit. The contact called for 1 more movie. I was watching a video on that movie today. My 73 year old sister Debbie said that’s her favorite Elvis movie. My cousin Darlene was a wonderful Christian who walked the talk and married a pastor she met while at college - he was a student. He graduated and they got married and she had a year of college to finish and she did. She was a first grade school teacher. Plus a preachers wife. She is in heaven along with a lot of my family members. A few years ago I was watching a woman preacher and in the middle of the video she mentions Elvis. She said she had a good friend - a woman and she had had a dream or vision of seeing two Elvises in heaven. She saw Jesus and she asked Him why is there two Elvises in heaven. Jesus told her his twin brother was born dead. So his brother was an identical twin. I stumbled upon that video and decided to watch it. Elvis was not in the title so that wasn’t why I watched it. I stumbled across the video and it caught my attention like I stumbled upon your channel. God moves in mysterious ways. I wasn’t a huge Elvis fan. I liked Ricky Nelson. I remember when my husband called to tell me Elvis had died. I was shocked and sad to think no more Elvis but I didn’t cry. I had never been to a concert or ever bought any Elvis records or tapes or memorabilia. A few years ago I bought an Elvis gospel cd at WalMart. Today I read a comment of a woman saying when Elvis died she took two weeks sick leave off from work that she was so torn up by his death. She was a huge fan. I got interested in Elvis over people saying Pastor Bob Joyce is Elvis. Yesterday I read in a comment that his Dad was Clyde Joyce Jr and Tarrent Tx was mentioned. I googled and saw his grave in Find A Grave and his wife Katherine who is Bob Joyce’s mother and she died in Benton, Arkansas. His Dad is buried in Texas. Under her picture it says Mother of Bob, Kary and Fay. I was reading on his frequently asked questions section on his website and he was born in 1952. His birth name is Robert Wayne Joyce. Some people think they are two separate people. I believe some people no matter any evidence shown need to believe he is Elvis. Elvis is in a much better place and with his twin brother and other family members in heaven ~ with our beloved Savior Jesus. How many times did Elvis sing How Great Thou Art and in sin city Las Vegas. God has a sense of humor. I want to see Jesus.🙏🏻 Elvis gets to see Jesus. Elvis sang No One Walks Alone. Elvis singing in heaven. My cousin who had that Elvis poster in her college dorm room is in heaven with Jesus and Elvis and family members and friends. I am 69 and sometimes I feel like I have been on earth for such a long time.

These girls were adventurous! Traveling from Australia & England basically on a wing and a prayer to try to meet there idol. I traveled to Hawaii to visit a boyfriend who lived there for awhile but I knew I would be welcome. 🌺 🙃 I just love how so many showed so much love and respect to Gary; especially Elvis. Knowing a couple special needs kids they mostly grave to just fit in. Also I'd love to have spent time with Uncle Vester. Another awesome video Ashley. Thanks 😊

How fun is Mary Joe?! Loved hearing her stories, wish I lived her life. lol At least the Elvis part of her life. Love listening about Gary and Mrs. Pepper too. This brings Gary's story to new, younger people and that is cool to me. I'm not surprised that Gary would have wanted to be like Elvis when it came to women, Gary looked up to Elvis and what do you do when you look up to someone....you try to emulate them. So it stands to reason that Gary would want to have girls around him too. Such cool stories for sure, Mary Joe was a lucky and brave gal to come across the pond at 17 and do all she did in Memphis with the entourage, Elvis and Gary. Too bad she lost in touch with Gary. So I'm guessing she never settle down and lived in Memphis. Might have missed that due to dogs barking. lol Thanks Ashley, your detective work in finding these people and getting them on camera/video before they are gone are second to none! Way to go!

Great interview Ashley. I wonder if Elvis knew that the guys were requesting sexual favours from his fans for access to him. I always thought that Charlie Hodge was a bit of a creep. I'm glad that this lady didn't give him any favours. Elvis respected women and loved his fans, so I wouldn't have thought he'd be very happy about it. 💖 🇬🇧

From what I've heard from friends of Elvis, he did know what "the boys" as he called them, were getting up to with the fans and that was part of why he came to despise those guys, they embarassed him everywhere he went and he didn't know how to get rid of them. Why didn't he just fire them? Because they would try to blackmail him with something every time he made any suggestion of that, and they would let him know that was something that was never going to happen if they could do anything about it, and in those last years they had made so many threats because they knew he was desperate to be rid of them, he was literally afraid of those guys. Occasionally he would get so disgusted he would fire one of them and they would show up for work the next day like it never happened. When he reminded them they'd been fired, it would go something like this - well, I've decided I want to keep my job so what are you gonna do about it? When Elvis told them what he was going to do about it, they would say something like - well, you love your little girl don't you? You wouldn't want to see anything happen to her? Elvis would assure them he was concerned about Lisa, and they would say, well I guess I have my job back then. I'm not kidding, those guys had turned into complete bastards in the end, and they were headed that way for years before they got there. Red was especially bad about that, that's why he finally asked Vernon to do the firing. It's not that he was a weak man and didn't try, they just weren't going to let it happen. After Vernon fired those guys, they made good on alot of the things they had threatened to blackmail him with by writing their book, so he knew they were serious. The saddest thing about the guys fooling around on their wives all the time was the effect it had on Elvis and Priscilla's relationship. He swore he was being faithful to her, and his friends say he was not the amoral man he's been portrayed as, he probably was faithful to his wife in spite of what some women have written about him, but those guys were constantly trying to make it look to Priscilla like he was cheating on her, even if they had to set something up. They were trying to cover their own asses with that, because their wives were always finding out what they were getting up to, and they were a little more understanding about it if they thought Priscilla was taking a dose of that, too. If the King's wife could handle her husband cheating on her, it seemed to make it a little less embarassing for them. They could tell themselves it was just a hazard of the business and it happens to the best of us. Charlie was usually more of a gentleman than the others, that's why Elvis let him stay in the house, but Charlie had a drinking problem, and that was the root of some of his evil. Like most drinkers, he couldn't be counted on for much, and Elvis knew he could only trust him just so far because of that. It was a sad situation for everyone, except the MM who made good money and got lots of women because of their position. I just realized how long this got, I apologize, hard to tell what was going on there and keep it short.

Just had to add to my last post that Jerry was one of the worst with the blackmail and threats, and it makes me sick to my stomach to see the way he comes off looking like such a nice guy all the time, but that's what Elvis was dealing with that was helping to fuel the drug issues. Who would believe that about Jerry? He thought no one would believe him, Jerry had become a master con artist and still is. I know people love to hear their stories, but he also wanted Billy and Jo off the property and couldn't figure out how to get rid of them. Anytime a family member wanted money or a place to live and he said no, guess who heard about it? In no time flat he was being called in to see his grandmother and she wanted to know why he couldn't help so and so, she was worried about them, and Elvis hated to upset his grandmother. Even his family was playing some dirty games with him. Anybody who knew the frustration he was going thru would understand why he had drug issues, he was losing interest in his career and his beloved home was no longer a sanctuary either, so to quit touring didn't seem like the answer. He was telling friends that putting family on the property was the worse thing he could have done, cause somebody was always at his door wanting something from him.

I have to say that I trusted Charlie and the other guys implicitly.. and never felt coerced or under threat. I have been lucky enough to meet Charlie and his wife Jennifer, in Dublin Ireland and drove them around for The Elvis Social Club more than once. I never found him to be a creep. 17 year olds were considered grown adults in 1966/67 in Memphis. Annette Day , Elvis’s Co star in Double Trouble was only 16. Charlie was just trying a line on me and I was free to choose…as I did.
I don’t know where you get information on the way the guys were.. but it was much safer than groupie situations in general in the 1960s . Elvis didn’t allow alcohol at his New Years Eve party that year. I never saw Charlie drunk. The guys were no angels but they had very good points as well. All I know is .. I always felt safe.
