Hey Johnny, About the Suileiman Shah, I made some research on Turkish websites about the story and history of it. (Turkish viewer here), it was in his will to be buried in Biladü'ş-Şam (Ottoman name for todays Syria Region) because he was martyred there. And thats why he is still in Syria even though its right next to the border. And also I believe there is an agreement of some sort to bring him back to his former burial place when things are more settled in the region. Btw I learned there is still a moseloum kind of thing where the dam overflowed his first burial place.

His current burial ground is temporary according to official sources. They plan on returning him to his original place once the war is over. I’m from Syria and I find such monuments to be proof of our shared heritage and brotherhood. I hope someday all this hatred and malice be over with so we could all visit it once this whole ordeal is over.

I really hope it's an honest mistake, the use of the footage from the Moroccan city of Laayoun in 3:31, a city that has representation in the Moroccan parliament and has been thriving economically in the last decade, to represent as you said " The people in the little strip who run their own country."
And if you zoom a little, you can see the red and green Moroccan flag in those images.
While actually, the seat of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic government is located in Tindouf, Algeria and not inside the little strip.

Condensing such a complex geopolitical conflit into a 2 to 3 minutes segment would require cutting a lot of elements .. Talking about the Sahara Question and not mentioning the Polisario Front, Algeria, Tindouf, the 1991 Armistice. I think he kept the elements of the story that are aligned with his political views, since a lot of these leftist westerners romanticize everything that has the words "freedom, independence..." His biais made him make a lot of mistakes in this video, not only the Laâyoune one.

Speaking of South China Sea, Indonesia is often left out in the discussion. They have tiny little parts that interfere with so-called “Nine Dash Line”. Even China is not going to let go this small part, which caused bit strained diplomacy with Indonesia.
In response, Indonesia updated their map, naming the contested area North Natuna Sea (Natuna being the island chain near the area). Only the contested area though, since Indonesia still call the rest of the sea as South China Sea.

people only know China claims 9dashline, but ignore to mention Taiwan still claims 11dashline today? because PRC inherited from ROC since 1949,
and ROC's 11dashline got supported by West and Soviet 1945, even US navy gave warships to Chinese to help ROC took over military control of South China Sea in 1946,
so ironically it means Chinese got legitimacy of South China Sea from West since 1946, and Malaysia Phillipines Vietnam didn't oppose because they were still colonies for West,

Very informative video, we appreciate your hard work. Just one thing that I would like to clear is... You mentioned Spain leaving Western Sahara but you didn't talk about the spanish occupation of the Sahara, it's an important part of the story. The Sahara was part of the Kingdom of Morocco since the 8th century, the spanish only arrived there after the protectorat of Morocco in 1912. Then Morocco gained independence in 1956 (the northern part) and tried to recover its Sahara using diplomacy for 20 years with no luck, then the green march was launched in 1975 forcing the spanish out of the Sahara region. Morocco never colognized the Sahara, they've recovered it.

    Hello @Johnny Harris
I like the mermaid of well researched videos that you share on your channel and enjoy the in-depth discovery of the different subjects.
Concerning the Moroccan sand wall border, I was disappointed you didn't keep your neutral analysis by showing the story of the two sides. I am Moroccan (and have my own biases) and I understand that the sahrawis (the separatist side of them) deserve to present their arguments, nonetheless the depiction of Morocco as the antagonist without showing our arguments such as our historical claims which go back way beyond the Spanish colonization of our sahara and way before the creation of Polisario in 1973 (sahrawi separatist group), can't leave me silent.
Morocco has invested a lot in the development of the region at the expense of the entire country. And yes I do acknowledge that we have had our wrongs in the conflict (from a human right perceptive) but different reports have highlighted the improvement of life conditions (economically and in terms of human rights) there throughout the years.
I encourage this channel followers to not stop at this simplistic video and to search for themselves and would appreciate if you could mention the lack of research on this topic in your next video.
Best of luck for your future.
Please note this is a constructive feedback that aims at helping you improve your work. I will continue enjoying your videos.

Furthermore, I didn't say human rights violation was alright, I was trying to build contrast with 2 opposite arguments to highlight the importance of neutrality.
Countries around the world did wrong things (exampli: Spain using chemical arms against northern moroccans during their colonization of the region in 1920s and only recently recognizing it and considering to offer compensations) and it is important to acknowledge them.

Hi Johnny, being a subscriber for a long time and really enjoying your content and all efforts to maintain a certain level of objectivity/impartiality.
However, having done a thesis on the subject myself, I did find that the part covering Morocco and W. Sahara border lacks indeed some research and it only portrays one version of the story/conflict.
Historically, the Sahrawi tribes have always pledged allegiance to the Sultans of Morocco(Current Alawi dynasty founded in the 17th century) before Spanish colonization. There has never been an independent country in the region, and to this day, SADR(founded in 1976 by the Polisario front after Spanish decolonization) is still not recognized as such by the UN and is only considered as a country de facto by mainly Algeria and a small number of countries. It is, therefore, a mistake to say that the population of Western Sahara "run their own country under the militant of Morocco". I think what you were referring to is the Autonomy plan proposed by Morocco to the UN to convince the Polisario (A small part of Sahrawi population that is calling for a referendum on the self-determination and are mainly living in Tinduf camps in Algeria, the other part being the Sahrawis living in the Moroccan controlled Sahara and predominantly consider themselves Moroccans).
Today, the call for a referendum on the self-determination is rendered practically inapplicable on the ground as the two countries Algeria (being the host of the Polisario front in Tinduf) and Morocco have inflated the numbers of the inhabitants of both sides.
The geopolitical stakes are enormous here which makes this conflict even more complex (too complex to cover in a couple of minutes anyways). This is mainly due to the involvement of the European powers. Which are interested in keeping the situation in a status quo, in order to have the upper hand on the economic contracts of fishing, agricultural products, phosphate... with Morocco and Algerian gas, oil..
Moreover, maintaining the conflict proves to be very efficient when it comes to selling weapons to both countries (In 2019 Algeria spent 9billion$ and Morocco 4 billion which puts them in the 1st and 2nd position respectively of the largest military budgets in Africa).

You got the Morocco thing wrong. "Western Sahara" is not a country its a geographical description. It was a colonized piece of Land by Spain, after the Spanish Left Morocco claimed what was historically theirs.
People that live in the Sahara speak the same language, have the same ethnicity, and the same culture as northern moroccans, they are in fact moroccan

      @ZiaddaiZ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@rogink the difference is, before the french took northern morocco and the spanish took southern morocco (hence the straight border) west sahara was historically in the moroccan kingdom. People indigenous to the western sahara are northafrican berber people, also known as moors or amazigh. This is is the same ethnicity as northern morocco.
The movement for a "free western sahara" is called "frente polisario" which is a spanish name. The leader of this movement, is now residing or was risiding in spain. The problem is this northern african piece of land is not european nor spanish, nor arabic, which they claim. Saudia arabia is very far away from that place.
The population was always very low in the territory of the western sahara. They are not capable of having an independent state. The Idea is that the Spanish along with the eu and algeria, install a "independent" government in this area so they can cooperate with them to get acces to its resources. Because when Morocco holds control of its desert it can decide about its resources. That is the problem

I think that you didn't searched/studied enough this object because it's a LOT more complicated, if we see the historical territory of morocco before the colonization, it was theirs. And also saharan and moroccans they are all the same, it was at the beginning just a small group but then Algeria came, gave them weapons and just fuckep up everything... As a big fan of your videos, I would like to show some false information that you might get. Before the colonization of Western Sahara by the Spanish that land and including Mauritania was a part of the Alaoui dynasty kingdom, who still rules Morocco. The Sahraoui tribes’ leaders are still showing public allegiance to the throne. The Polisario (who claims to the independence of Western Sahara) is a creation of Algerian military government to create a war so Morocco don’t reclaim its stolen territories by the French during the colonization of Algeria for more than 100 years. The claimed refugees in the Algerian territories are living in terrible poor conditions while their so-called leaders are beneficing of world charity and donate. In the other hand all the cities and its habitant in the Moroccan Sahara are living the best conditions with job opportunities and that other countries that claim to be a ‘regional power’ don’t have. The wall was necessary to stop Polisario raids on Moroccan cities and it did a great job.
FYI: many Israeli ministers are from Moroccan origins, and to this day they show their allegiance to the Moroccan throne.

Historically speaking western Sahara has always been apart of Morocco it was taken by the Spanish and liberated by Moroccan, it's not logical to split a country into two 35 million people in one side and half a million in the other that's crazy.
Plus now there a new movement in western Sahara called SADR that claim to be the real Sahrawi people and claim independence from the Polisario (the people that claim it form the selves) and now the Polisario are saying that the SADR are just a joke and that for a few people to claim hundreds of KLM of land is crazy, they don't see the irony in it.

When the Spaniards arrived at Villa Cisneros (Dajla) (1884), they spoke to the Sultan of Mauritania and the Sahrawi Authority; but when the Spaniards arrived at Sidi Ifni, they spoke to the Moroccan Sultan, who was under that Sultan. Thus, as the decision of the Hague Court states, So, as the ruling of the Hague Court says, Morocco and Mauritania with the support of the UN. it has been proved that when the Spanish arrived in the Sahara, neither Mauritania nor Morocco had a sovereign link with the Sahara.
Therefore, using the judgment of the Hague Tribunal, United Nations Resolution 1514 is applicable in Western Sahara!

I always appreciate your Videos, but it seems you are not informed well enough about the Morocco conflict.
It is naive to believe that a Independence Movement with the name "Frente Polisario" (Spanish Name) has nothing to do with post colonialism. You also completely omitted the role of Algeria in this conflict.
You are right, Morocco is very strict about the showing of the complete map, but if you consider the colonial history of france and spain, of chemical attacks and many other things, you shouldnt really blame them too much by beeing protective of their heritage.
I know you probably believe that the moroccan occupation of the western sahara was an offensive act and that the indigenous people - (this is also difficult because they are ethnically and culturally moroccans/northafricans and not arabs as the "sahrawi arab democratic republic" claims) - are beeing opressed. But its not as black and white as it seems.
I could talk very much about this conflict, but I dont think it would make sense, because you didn't really dive deep into that issue and you couldnt verify my informations or put them into context.

Some reports say that this area is becoming hot again. In reality, Morocco has "owned" this land for years...not saying it's right but it's reality. Typical complicated third world scenario here between first and third world parties...the Moroccans, POLISARIO, France, and Spain. No good choices in the middle east and no 'good' guys that I can find. A lot of people that have been taken advantage of. Abraham Accord was working until reversed, we actually made peace around the Palestinians and bypassing the Iranians, as soon as that was reversed we had a protracted battle. Interesting mission in the Western Sahara...for the record...nothing is more corrupt than a UN mission.

Johnny I love your videos but please get your facts rights, Western Sahara is the name of the region not a country, there is no such thing as a country called "Western Sahara", there is a certain military-political organization funded and armed by Morocco's eastern neighbor Algeria, called the Polisario who wants to control the region through a republic that they proclaimed to be "SADR" or "Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic" a semi recognized entity by two dozen of countries mostly located in Africa. There was a 15 years war between Morocco and this organization which pushed Morocco to build a defensive berm to stop/freeze/neutralize the Polisario attacks which were causing thousands of casualties, a group armed with main battle tanks, armored transport troops vehicles, anti-tank missiles, anti-air missiles and all sort of artillery, Morocco did not built the berm with the purpose to separate the population, in fact the official stance of the Moroccan gov is that the Sahrawi people who live in the refugee camps are all legitimate resident of the region and need to be resettled. Lastly please before talking about any conflict next time at least do some research about who the heck are the sides fighting in the future. TLDR: The name of the "republic" is "SADR" not Western Sahara (W.S is the name of the region), and the conflict is much more nuanced that "good guys vs bad guys" as you paint it in your head.

    Hello Johnny,
I have been a very big fan of your videos for a long time since you were still at Vox as I believed they are very informative and creative, and it doesn't hurt that I too am a geography nerd. However, this video is unfortunately making me question all of your research and findings about all of your previous videos.
Trying to squeeze the Western Sahara issue into 3 minutes in that manner and failing to provide further information on the topic is quite frankly an insult to the people who are indeed affected by this long-lasting conflict.
I would strongly recommend you do further research and attempt to understand the roots of the conflict and who the Polisario Front is and how they're financially supported. Once you have all the facts and provide the viewers both sides of the story to a conflict that gets very little attention, then maybe your opinion could be valid. You are entitled to your opinion, but please give all the facts before giving it out.
P.S. the cities that you showed are part of the Moroccan controlled side and most goods and services are heavily subsidized by the Moroccan government, who has invested billions of dollars (regardless of its own interests) into attempting to make Western Sahara more prosperous for the Moroccans who have immigrated there and the Moroccan Sahrawis who have been living there before Spain relinquished the territory.
