On the Frontlines of Ukraine's Proxy War Between the West and Russia

  • The West has used everything from signals intelligence operations, espionage, fighter jet saber-rattling, and diplomatic standoffs to stem the rise of Russian influence around the world. These efforts are coming to a dangerous head in Ukraine - a classic Eastern Bloc proxy state - where the presence of NATO troops is driving tensions to Cold War-era levels.
As the armed conflict between the Ukrainian army and Russian-backed separatists enters its third year, VICE travels to the frontline to take a closer look at what international assistance really looks like for those caught in the line of fire.

Remember the Budapest memorandum, where Russia, GB and the US guaranteed Ukraine's borders will not be changed? It's the first thing - Russia has its promises in its ass :)
The second thing is that 73rd article of Ukraine's constitution says that only by referendum of all the Ukrainian regions (!) can be decided any change of Ukraine's borders. That's why the referendum in Crimea is illegal.
The third thing is that all the Crimea was occupied by russian armed forces (Putin said that it is true in a year after the annexion). If you say "oh, there were russian forces before that" - that's true, but they had no rights to leave restricted territories (the russian's fleet bases).
It's a shame you, see no problems in violating international laws and countrys' sovereignty. It's a shame you, dear citizen of whatever country, approve methods of 19'th century in international politics and diplomacy and openly support a warmonger.

" the US/corrupt satanic Joe Biden need to stop antagonizing Putin, its their faults that these civilians keep getting killed. They are just trying to hide all the children they have trafficked to Ukraine and keep in the basements of the bio labs bla bla bla"
They are falling for russian propaganda that is so obviously fake, you'd have to be a compleat moron who gets a weekly frontal lobotomy to believe putlers BS. Even when its dressed up and parroted by Rupert Murdochs propaganda puppets. ie; Traitor Carlson, Sean smalldixkenergy Hannity, Marjorie FootFungus Green, Etc. They are just putting lipstick on a very gross commie pig.
I like Anthony Blinkens statement "if russia stops fighting there will be no war, if Ukraine stops fighting there will be no more Ukraine."
Notes, yes I am aware you can not get multiple lobotomys.

Ethnicity makes those ghettos and high crime, not the country. The United States is called the melting pot, not the stewing pot. That means everybody came in with one thing and became a part of everything that ended up being what "American" is. In Syria Russians were invited by the legitimate government and therefore legal under international law. Likewise Iran. The USA invaded illegally. In Crimea..."The autonomous Republic of Crimea" with its own Parliment In Simferopol, arranged a referendum to Leave The Ukranian federation and rejoin the Russian federation. This resulted in over 96 %in favour of rejoining Russia. I doubt if that proportion of East Germas would have been in favour of rejoining West Germany...which did not have such a democratic referendum of those directly concerned. In East Ukraine where I have stayed and have friends the situation is terrible. Russia cannot invade or would be in breach of international law, Individual Russians no doubt help but an army is needed to repel the Kiev junta forces. So many atrocities have been committed by the US backed junta that there never will be the possibility of Lugansk and Donbass ever reuniting with Kiev. Refugees run away from aggressors, not towards them. There are two million such refugees from East Ukraine in Russia...a clear show of who the aggressors are in this conflict. A little known fact...of the ten most populous cities in Ukraine nine speak predominately Russian not Ukranian. However in the heart of the conflict area in Debaltsavo my friends speak both daily. Read "Frontline Ukraine" for more information. I have neither the time nor inclination to counter the saturation Western war machine propaganda.

    • @jimmyn89SWE
      @jimmyn89SWE 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

You forget to mention that Russia already occupied the entire peninsula, including government buildings, the "decision" to hold the referendum was made while the parliament building was occupied by armed Russian soldiers. The Crimean prime minister that was appointed while the parliament was occupied only had 4% of the popular vote, his party held 3 seats out of 100 in the parliament.
And there was at least one MP who has stated that his voting card was used to vote for holding a referendum despite him not even being present at the time.
The military occupation alone makes the referendum illegal, no matter if the results are authentic or not.

jimmyn89SWE Wrong on every point. The president was elected, not appointed. His ratings were poor but as poor as the present US backed Junta. The USA is not occupying all of Cuba because thy have a torture base there.

Stop this charade, no one believes the official Russian story. The entire world knew the so called "little green men" were Russian soldiers the moment they appeared.
And they weren't sitting in their base in Sevastopol, they were all over the peninsula, occupying government buildings and besieging Ukrainian bases, so yes, Crimea was under military occupation.
And far as pretty much the entire world sees it, Crimea is still occupied, almost no countries recognize Russian rule, even close friends of Russia have refused to recognize it as part of Russia.

    • @jimmyn89SWE
      @jimmyn89SWE 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Lomnjac007 Oh yeah? Less than 10 countries have officially recognized Russian rule over Crimea, out of roughly 200 or so countries in the world.
      1. What ban? The repeal of the language law was vetoed by interim president Turchynov, the repeal never passed.
And even if it had, it certainly did not ban Russian language, the law was only passed in 2012 and Russian language was not banned before 2012.
Also, separatist commander Igor Girkin has claimed personal responsibility for starting the war.
Furthermore, there have been plenty of weapons used in the war that are in service with the Russian military but that are not and never have been used by the Ukrainian military and therefore could not have come from any Ukrainian depots.
      2. As for nazism, the nazis in Ukraine are a small minority, put together Svoboda and Right Sector hold about 7 seats out of 450 in the Ukrainian parliament. And there are nazis fighting on the separatist side as well by the way. In fact the former "People's governor" of Donetsk, Pavel Gubarev who is a Russian by the way, was part of the neo nazi group "Russian National Unity".
      3. The Georgian army was most certainly not led by any Americans and only a small part of it had any American training and that was counter insurgency training which is not exactly useful when fighting against a conventional army.
And there were far more than 10 000 Russian soldiers involved, not to mention separatist forces, the Georgians were heavily outnumbered.
Also, the war started after months of separatist and Russian provocations.
There were skirmishes between Georgia and separatist forces the entire first week of August. These skirmishes started when separatist IED injured 5 Georgian policemen.
And Russia had already been massing and moving forces towards the Roki tunnel before the war started, whereas the Georgians only mobilized on August 7th when fighting was already underway.
The Georgian offensive was nothing but a desperate preemptive strike.
And really? 300 kilometers you say? Have you actually looked at a map from Georgia, it's a small country. If Georgian forces fighting in Thskinvali had retreated for 300 kilometers they would've ended up deep inside either Turkey, Armenia or Azerbaijan, they even could've reached Iran.
And no one claims that Ukraine could withstand a fullscale invasion, Russia is only doing enough to keep the separatists from being overrun, for example in August 2014 when the separatists where on the verge of collapse.
And it is extremely hypocritical for Russia to support the separatists seeing as supporting separatism in Russia is a crime that can give 5 years in prison.

A proxy war is when two sides use two smaller sides to wage war. In this example the West is using the Ukrainian military while Rusdia is using Ukrainian separatists and mercenaries. Russia and the West can't fight each other because they have nuclear weapons, so they get these smaller groups to fight on their behalf.
The same thing happened in Vietnam.

You're wrong. Russia was looking to:
1.) Acquire Crimea to regain a warm water port for its submarines.
2.) Acquire as much of Eastern Ukrainian territory as possible (as they have a high Russian speaking population)
3.) They wanted Western Ukrainians to replace their government with a more pro-Russian government. You have to remember that Russian intervention started because Viktor Yanukovych refused to sign a treaty to let Ukraine enter the EU since he supported Russian-Ukrainian relations. After people protested and Viktor left the country Russia started its intervention to keep Ukraine from joining the EU.
Russia is afraid of former USSR states joining the EU because its afraid of losing influence. In all honesty, joining the EU makes economic sense to these countries because they get more trade and their standards of living rises. Russia however is scared of losing power because they think that the West plans to overthrow them one day. Which doesn't make any sense since the Cold war is over; changing out the Russian government would be much more costly and dangerous than just leaving Russia alone.
Poland for example is extremely wary of Russia, and Russia hasn't been able to touch them because Poland is in NATO. Now Ukraine wants to join NATO to stop further Russian interference.

"As the armed conflict between the Ukrainian army and Russian-backed separatists enters its third year, VICE travels to the frontline to take a closer look at what international assistance really looks like for those caught in the line of fire."
      What it should say:
The West has used everything from signals intelligence operations, espionage, fighter jet saber-rattling, and diplomatic standoffs *and coups* to stem the *defense of Russia and its allies* around the world. These efforts are coming to a dangerous head in Ukraine - a classic Eastern Bloc *ally of Russia* - where the presence of NATO troops *and the puppet government of the USA and its entities* is driving tensions to *extreme* Cold War *II* levels.
As the armed conflict between *USA and its entities back* the Ukrainian army and *its puppet government* and Russian-backed separatists enters its third year, VICE travels *50 miles from the front, complete with staged fighting* to *pretend to* take a look at what international assistance really looks like for those caught in the line of fire, *which is mostly civilians killed by the Ukraine Army and USA backed NGO's*.
EDIT: I have not rechecked my map. It may be more accurate to say 40 miles. Also, USA has boots on the ground in the form of advisers/trainers. The USA has also conducted military exercises such a Marine amphibious landings on Ukraine beaches/shores, etc. The USA and its entities last coup was against the democratically elected Ukraine gov which it over-threw and installed the puppet gov. There is a lot more to the situation. If you desire, find my other post.

And of the Black Sea Agreement where in exchange for leasing bases in Crimea Russia was bound to "respect the sovereignty of Ukraine, honor its legislation and preclude interference in the internal affairs of Ukraine"
Of course Putin being the criminal he is completely disregard both these when he illegally annexed Crimea.

Canadians are training the Ukrainian army because its in Canada's interests to keep the Russian military at bay, Canada Isn't a "peaceful" or "neutral" Nation by any standards however friendly its foreign policies may be they have too much at stake to not intervene. They share a very close border to Russia, and the Russian military (NAVY) has been aggressively paving new trade routes and threatening Canadian vessels in the arctic. Take me back to 1634 when the "Ukrainians" were liberated from the Pols . Or better yet lets go back to December 6th 1240 AD when the Mongols wiped out Kiev and inter bred with their women for a few hundred years . Tell me the History of Ukraine starting from the Varangians . Show me how well you know your Slavic history. Tell me about these Ukrainian Nomads . Where do they come from, Mongolia or somewhere in the Deserts of Arabia ?

    • @simonedaniel
      @simonedaniel 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

kj smith It seemed to me like you were attempting to justify Russia's claim over Ukraine, so I presented facts to disprove you. I only said 'forgetting' for the context of this response - although Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union in which Russia was a member (the dominant member, too), Russia only happened because of Ukraine, so there is little justification for this invasion based on the Soviet Union. Sorry if it offended you, but Russian patriotism is quite aggravating.

As a US citizen, I am sympathetic to Russia's issues with Nato. It makes no sense as to why we have continued Nato in a way that does not include Russia. We should either scrap Nato and make a new coalition that includes Russia, or we should include Russia in Nato. But to keep them out of any formal coalition is ridiculous. Russia feels that Nato has viewed them as the enemy since the collapse of the Soviet Union and when we are putting missile defense systems and god knows what else at their borders, I understand why. Mind you, I'm not defending the actions of Putin, all I'm saying is its very easy to see how we got here and I think the only way out of this at this point, is by including Russia rather than isolating them. Russia went toe to toe with the US for 50 years and to be honest, the two countries brought the best out of each other, the competition drove us to evolve technologically like we never would have otherwise. However that came at a great cost, which was living every day with the fear that day could be your last. We must do everything we can to prevent us from going back to that.

Russia will never be part of NATO... NATO's mission is to marginalize Russia. Its like oil & water.
At least some in the US are interested in reorganizing NATO and making it relevant to the post-soviet era. NATO should have gone away along with the USSR.
Unfortunately there are others in the US, including one running for president... who cannot think outside of the East/West box & are dying to have at it with the Russians... and will stop at nothing to engage in some sort of conflict with them, at minimum restart the cold war... at most, start WW3.
That is the truly dangerous candidate and likely the future of the USA. It is no wonder that she has the backing of many current & former military/intelligence officials who spent their entire careers with Russia as their adversary... many of whom are not happy with how the USSR dissolved and want to see Russia completely ruined. Not to mention the mil/ind complex which never met a war it didnt like and stands to profit massively from such a conflict reigniting... Which is why there is such a distracting smear campaign against Trump... trying to distract you with pseudo-racism and misogyny... What they really hate is that he doesnt want to fight Russia & sees them as potential allies and trading partner. Many stand to profit from the status quo, Trump represents a reset in US-World relations both economically and militarily... Cold warriors and big money interests see the decline of their power under Trump and as such are backing the only neo-con war monger they can, and that of course is Hillary Clinton.
      Choose wisely in November people.

You sure you want the answer? OKaaay. USA/NATO are preparing an invasion of Russia. This the biggest build up of NATO forces since the Korean War. That is why there was a western coup of Ukraine, so that USA/NATO could have a better aggressive posture against Russia.
It is very similar to what Hitler did before his invasion of Russia in WWII.
It is very similar to the Cuban Missile Crisis, only 1000 times worse.
I think I will stop there. I probably fucked up your day.

netzoned oh? It was NATO that was preparing to invade? Huh. That's odd. Last I checked it was the Russians that annexed Crimea and funded separatists first. The people hated the Ukrainian president because he was a Russian shill. So now Russia is poised to invade and conquer ukraine. This time, I want the US to fire at Russia. You losers didn't learn your lesson the first time, so we have to teach it to you again.

NATO doesn't want a war, it knows it will loose. Russian aggression is getting out of hand, illegal invasion of Crimea, Chechnya... helping Al Assad's regime destroy its nation and killing more civilians than ISIL and other terrorist groups... good job Russia.
