,410 shotguns are great for wall hangers.

They have their place. The clay ground isn't one of them. It was enjoyable carrying the .410 SMLE around for a bit of squirrel shooting, just don't ask how many I got...
It's the price of .410 cartridges that I can't get my head around, certainly not economical compared to using a 12 gauge.

@@nickvending9688 I know I has an FAC section 1 and shotgun cert in the 1980's and the .410 was useless. Better off with a good air gun. However what you have done is really cool. I had a 1914 SMLE de ack on the wall over the fireplace inc the long bayonet ant it was an amazing after dinner talking piece, I think the ex girlfriend still has it.

@grahamthebaronhesketh. Thank you, much appreciated. I do displays of WW1 and WW2 Militaria, the SMLEs are always crowd favourites and conversation starters.

Thanks 😂. Yep I still look at the gun and wonder what I was thinking, maybe someone spiked my drink at work.
Sadly it is still in the queue waiting for surgery. Hopefully it won't be too long now.

A friend of mine has a .410 long Lee, sadly his was sporterised but it shoots very well.
What is your plan with your 3?

I saw the same butt stock on eBay about 2-3 months ago.

    G'Day,
There is a sort of hideous beauty in that sporterized LeeEnfield! Best of luck with your project. Here in Australia, I've come across sporterized single shot .410 shotguns that were either converted from SMLE's here or in the UK. I've been tempted by them but their "collectors" price tag put me off and I ended up buying a cheap single barrel Boito for close range bunny hunting. Much lighter to lug around compared to the double SxS 12 gauges that I've carried for over 50 years.
I'm keen to see how your project turns out.
    Cheers,
    Steve

Hello Steve, thank you for your comment much appreciated 👍🏻.
The prices of good .410 conversions keep going up here too, this one was reasonably inexpensive due to the condition. It certainly splits opinion, some people that see it want me to keep it as is, but most people burst out laughing.
Having been out on the squirrels with the .410 SMLE I can definitely say that they are heavy and a bit cumbersome. Good fun though.

im interested as i am currently converting mine to a restricted mag in line with section 2. Its alot cleaner than this but still needs work.
Did this thing get a restricted mag certificate?

Hello, thank you for your comment much appreciated. The intention with this rifle is currently to convert it back into a firearm, probably in 6.5 Creedmoor.
Croxton Country Stores can convert a .410 Enfield to 3 shot restricted magazine with proof certificate at a bargain price, I can put you in touch with them if that would be helpful?

I don't get why the original sporterizer did such nice work on the butt end of the stock and then just left the front half a hacked off standard piece

    • @nickvending9688
      @nickvending9688  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hello, thank you for your comment much appreciated 👍🏻. If you are referring to the No.4 then the wood carving on the butt is really not that good in real life and the cheek piece is quite badly fitted. The fore-end, well that is even worse. The poor gun is in a real mess cosmetically but it does shoot extremely well hence why I decided to save it from a life sat on the rack in the shop.
I'm leaning towards turning it back into an original looking No.4 rather than my other L42 style ideas, but with a No.4 T cheek piece to raise the comb. Just a shame that the bayonet lugs are missing but that's a minor gripe.

@@nickvending9688 I'm lucky I'm in the US and can just easily buy a military configuration enfield... It's actually harder to find a musket than the standard gun by a long margin. If I don't win the one I bid on in the gun auction I signed up for, I'm of a mind to just buy some old beat up rifle and drill out the barrel myself.

Over here in the UK us shooters are jealous of the USA gun laws. It is taking a year now in the UK to renew a firearms license, never mind applying for one!

After a lot of thinking, the rifle is currently with a gunsmith being re-barreled back to .303. I honestly couldn't think of a way it could be truly useful as a single shot .410.

Whats the problem, if the right person had customized his rifle in that fashion , and you couldnt afford it , you would be very up set and jealous. Yet you dont even realize how some of the most reknown hunting and sport rifles came into existence. Men took a 5 to 10 dollar surplus weapon and made it work for him. Theses were average joes that $10 was Just like $100 dollars and he didnt have a sear and roebuck card. And yhe nearest Mongomery wards was 50 miles away. Quit condemning what you dont understand mr. Instant get what you want McDonald's.

Hello, thanks for watching and thank you for commenting, much appreciated.
Hmm ok... well beauty is in the eye of the beholder after all.
Guess you missed the awful welding and butchery of the stock set? Also the gun may look reasonable in the video, trust me though it is rough and extremely badly done, that carving on the butt looks like it was done by a toddler with a Stanley knife and the wood fit up would be dangerous if it was still a .303.
The conversion process from .303 to .410 is governed by some very odd legislation, including welding in the magazine and trigger guard screws after the fore-end was installed, so the wood is burnt and basically shot. This was done by a supposedly qualified gunsmith, not by a man (or woman) making it work for them. To make it worse their shocking work was then approved by the UK proof house.
Fact is, the poor gun was languishing unloved and impossible to sell in a gunshop. I've rescued it and will set about restoring it as best I can whilst sticking within UK law. Hence my remorse at this impulse heart over head purchase once I realised just how restrictive the UK law will be and how difficult the job will be.
But hey, I like a challenge.
      All the best, Nick
