      That's been a common fault of Gareth throughout his reign. He took a squad of 26 but was only likely to seriously use 16 or 17 of them. The rest were there just to make up the numbers. Every player is at risk with him. And they know it. No one is superior to the team. He supports the guys, but don't mess up or he'll get rid of you. And look at his career. Agree with Simon, the next manager has to be a proven, serial winner. Southgate is not that, he's just a lukewarm, feel good manager that tries to create an amicable, non confrontational environment.
    The media loves Southgate because he has got the playing group "united". The point of the game is to win, not be back home after the quarterfinals. A manager with a solid track record, steely edge and winning mentality. Southgate ain't that, he's just a PR darling, and then the media try convince the public that "he's on the right track, we're getting there" nonsense.

      @LeonWillBeatUsman So where would this serial winner be coming from if that whole serial winning thing obviously doesn't translate? Eriksson came here with the reputation of fashioning a Serie A treble, Southgate's bettered him TWICE and that's not including the '19 Nations League. Seems to me that folk are in a rush to get back to where we were seven years ago, in the vain hope that it'll somehow make us serial trophy collectors all of a sudden.

      @ecaeas4439 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't like getting on him for 96, because it can genuinely happen to anyone. But he just doesn't learn. His mistakes in big games - being reactive, failing to make changes soon enough, panicking and making ridiculous substitutions which contradict who is playing well and which areas of the pitch need improvement - were repeated in that France game, just as they were repeated against Italy from the Croatia game.
      We've given him chance to learn, but he's thrown away 3 pivotal matches where his lack of management acumen cost us going further in / winning tournaments. Can't keep excusing his failures just because he's improved the average of England performances. He will not get us over the line in tournaments - with him, we will always be stuck getting relatively close but falling at the biggest hurdles because he's scared to change the system or play to our strengths.

    I've been going in hard on Southgate over the past few weeks but I'll give him one thing - he turned the ship around and got us consistently going deep into tournaments, but along the way he has made far too many mistakes that simply didn't make any sense, my new favourite being bringing Jack Grealish on a minute before the end of stoppage time! What is that going to achieve? That's the sort of thing you do when you're winning 2-1 and you want to try and waste a bit of time!
    Southgate has taken the England team to a much better level than it was in 2016 under Roy Hodgson, he has made players want to play for England and he has made the nation fall back in love with the national team, but he's now reached his ceiling. We can't be having these same discussions in eighteen months' time when we get knocked out in the semi finals by France or Spain. It's been six years - a period where we should've won at least one tournament; that Italy team were there for the taking and we should've gone for the throat. That's the problem with Southgate - he doesn't have that killer instinct and he plays favourites too much.
    2024 will mark the rise of the "Golden Generation" to their prime years. We need to have a manager in place with the steel, ruthlessness and tactical know-how to take advantage of that.

    The English sporting mentality is still dogged by the notion of "gentlemanly amateurism" and the spirit of Kipling's famous poem "If" which has the line, "If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same". I think Southgate tries to live up to this gentlemanly ideal and so does the FA. Thats why they can just blithely announce that they want him to stay on without so much as a post tournament inquiry as to what went wrong instead of having an honest heart-searching analysis which would show that Southgate lacks the tactical ability to change a game while its on. Southgate is a good man and he was great at dealing with the racist fallout after the Euros loss - pity he didn't send on Rashford et al after 60 minutes when they might have won the game in normal time and so avoid the shootout altogether -but all that cant remove the fact of his tactical limitations that stop him from being at the sort of level that wins international titles. Sorry for going on but Im really concerned that if Southgate stays we can kiss goodbye to any Euros title in 2024.

Just because "I can't leave either out, they're so talented." Maddison does circles around Mount. And there is only a 2 year difference between them. If he resigns, he won't ever manage another high profile international side or any club in top 5 league football. England should be giving English managers with a body of work that shows they can over achieve an opportunity. England needs an aggressive manager, being nice wins you nothing - Lampard does not fit the bill either.
