Hold up, you forgot the absolute champ of a transmission that's in my car. I must have had the absolute GOAT of a QA person because my TY75 is still kicking ass. I've done over 400 launches and rolls at varying degrees of hp and mainly 400wtq since January. I will be swapping to a STI transmission in January but still damn impressed that my transmission feels like the first day I got the car.
@@yoltsbp Yup, I agree! If the majority of the ty75 transmissions failed then subaru would have a big issue haha. But I get what you mean. Just pointing out some things aren’t invincible 👍
To be fair the car doesn’t come from factory designed to make 400-500whp. To me it’s safe to assume that if you’re chasing huge numbers like that, you’re gonna have to swap out some parts.
They did make changes, but it was only primarily the syncros and the teeth on the gears. I think they might have changed the ratios, but I'm not sure about that. The other thing too is that the STI trans isn't stronger only because it's bigger; the STI trans has a proper input shaft, while the VB 6 speed uses that dinky input shaft that is too long with insufficient support. Plus, ya, it's too small.
My syncros went at 17k and had been whining for a long time before that. Also had my throw out bearing start sqeeking and replaced before that. I can honestly say I don't launch the car because I've had issues before with tuned trans and motor in my VA. The engineer admitted to my service tech that this has been an issue for a long time. I have a bunch of parts to install and tune that will make 350+hp. I haven't even installed my AOS because it will void the warranty. I have mixed feelings about tuning my VB now. I'm currently in CA dealing with family stuff. I'll have to discuss safe tuning with Graham or JR when I get back to KC, hopefully by February. At least I have a new clutch and rebuilt trans to start with. Not being able to run AOS because of all this and getting close to 20k makes me wonder how much gunk has already accumulated ?😢
If U happen to rebuild or switch your transmission to an older TY85, I'd highly advise you to replace the original synchros with the carbon fibre ones. The synchros are one of the weakest parts on the old TY85. And please use the proper transmission fluid.
To be honest a 300 hp car is more than enough 99% of the time, and 99% of the people can’t drive a 400+ hp car at 9/10 in a canyon road. If straight line acceleration is your thing then Subaru is not the best car for that.
I got my first ever wrx and I like to do a lot of 2nd and 3rd gear pulls probably once or twice everyday. The car is stock with 5000 miles. Is that bad?
@@carswithsepp Not that I know of. IDK the internal specs of the different variations. the center diff in 08 + is all the same, as is the front and rear. I'd presume that any STI 6-speed is better than this split case in my VB

Damn ! You got a diamond in the rough haha. Can’t wait to see the STI gearbox swapped in
@@carswithseppthere are wayyy more people not having issues vs the handful that have had theirs grenade. Just saying.

You may secretly have an sti trans already ;)

Good point ! Thanks for sharing
I love your vb content. Keep it up!

I want to manual swap my 22 outback just need some pointers. STI swapping it would be even wilder. I have the Wilderness with 2.4
400/480 here and been for 16k miles. Not one issue yet.
I love your videos brother. I own a stock 2020 WRX/STI. I am never going to do any power mods to it ever. I'm @55K. Living the subie life yall. 😊
Thanks bro! I love the VA STI :)

Hey that’s me in the beginning 😮
Pinned! Love the car bro:)
@@carswithsepp that’s bro I really appreciate it!!😁
Axle length to hubs on sti vs wrx arent the same.
I rented a VB for one week I wasn’t impressed 😂
Get a civic, sounds like thats more you're style.
How much is the STI trans swap?
Really depends. Are you having a shop do it? Are you DIY? Buying used? New? High side 8k. My 14 was about 6k
@@crypticmushu1560 I was expecting to hear lowball is 12k that's not too bad actually.
I've seen one guy do it for only $2500 range, another around $4500, and one who paid someone for all the work plus the parts around $5500 range.
@@RobHTech Is there a preferred STI transmission to use? Obviously the VA gen STI's but is there a better one to use within the 2015-2021 STI's?
