American former drinker here, in my drinking days, my wife and I were in London. Stopped by a pub on the way off the subway (tube?). In the early afternoon we witnessed an Ambulance and police pull two drunken fighters out of the pub, before we actually entered, with blood everywhere. Too early in the afternoon for Americans. We stopped by the next day to chat with a South African who had only lived in the UK for a relatively short time but regaled us with storys of running into fight after fight at all hours in London. During my long drinking career not seen the like in the states, certainly not that early in the day. Lots of alcoholic pent up anger in London then.
Thank goodness I am retired. I have some horrible experiences to look back on over the years. Christmas socialising is always such a stressful time. I'm sure at least 50% of the people that turn up to these events really don't want to be there. They are scared not to go incase they seem odd.
30 years ago o got out if the USAF after 4!years. I took a landscaping job for the summer. We took nips if vodka all day. Starting at 6:30 am. It was all cool as long as you got too drunk to drive the Bobcat.😂😂 Think the boss kept us half drunk so we didn't notice the crappy pay. In our defense we did luve in the state of Wisconsin, where booze is one of the food groups. I went on to have a very interesting drinking career 😢.
You should'nt have to give any explanation to anyone that you don't Drink. Be firm from the onset and they will soon get the message. I am 4 yrs sober and I still go out withnmy mates & they know I don't drink anymore. Actually they drink less when with me. I think they are also questioning their drinking.

I have seen people lose their jobs more than once over the years by getting drunk.
