yeah this is exactly why I decided not to buy any of them. Especially when I also saw that a year after I bought the game they made the main game for free.
So they just after you buying all the packs without actually being any different from the sims 1,2 or 3

To be fair to Skyrim, when I played it for the first time I thought it was a done deal when I killed Grelod and promptly forgot about it. A while later, I got the "We know" letter and I was thoroughly spooked. I didn't need in-game nightmares, I had some real ones that night

I had a spoopy experience while playing Oblivion on my laptop.
There's a quest you had to escort two brothers from their home to a city and everything was alright: me riding a horse, them two running after me. After a while some enemy trigged the brothers aggro mode and I got off my mount to help them... but theres was no monster around.
One of the brothers was still standing besides his dead brother, standing and smiling. When I went to get closer to check the body, my screen went black and crashed my entire laptop.
After shitting my pants and thinking I was living a creepypasta, I remembered that I hadn't connected my laptop in hours and coincidentally it turned off in this strange scene.

I honestly love this topic. Like the extreme contrast between light and dark and unsuspecting horror in non horror games. In oblivion, there's such an obvious contrast between Oblivion gates/dungeons/caves and the overworld, which is this summery, inviting landscape. Mankar Camoran's Paradise is kind of symbolic of this too because it's actually like this beautiful looking hellish world where people are being tortured constantly. I love Oblivion's dark brotherhood questline, but yeah that ending feels bad. I like how they just recolored a zombie to be Lucien's body. The lack of detail and resemblance to his original model makes it more disturbing somehow.

Cool video idea. The first thing I thought of for scary things in un-scary games was the angry sun in Mario 3 😂… I would also mention Baldurs Gate 2, especially the quest line that starts off with serial killer trying to make armor out of human skin- and you can finish that armor! Horror can definitely hit harder when you aren’t expecting it.

This was something about Oblivion that I loved. It had such a colourful veneer yet if you just looked past that it quickly became apparent how messed up everything actually was.
My favourite horror moment had to be one of the fighter's guild quests in Oblivion where you wreck a town while under the influence. When you go back and discover the awful truth it's a real gut punch. Even worse when it's after midnight and the game glitches causing all the corpses to float around.

the blood and wine expansion for the witcher 3 is so flamboyant, colorfull and then u get quest like Oleanna's story....and paired with ur trailer memories then u will get how badly will end. for me also Fear and Hunger, is already horror but since graphics is 16bit stile sprite ..u will always think how much bad and heavy this game can go in this game? ..and then u play and discover that ignorance is a blessing

Oblivion gates were quite horrific for me, at least on my first playthrough, the hellscape vibes, burnt and tortured corpses, but the fact that at the beginning...the difficulty is so unforgiving, almost requiring a tone down, makes trying to survive the trials of Oblivion a fearfull horror in and of itself...

Loved hearing about Warcraft in this. My favourite horror thing - truly terrifying in the scope of Warcraft - was C'thun's whispers throughout AQ40 and AQ20. For most of the Old Gods, the whispers would appear in the chat log, like any NPC dialogue. But for C'thun, it doesn't appear. You're just suddenly hearing "Your heart will explode" or "Your friends will betray you" being literally whispered into your head but you have nothing in the chat log to be sure it actually happened.

I was so scared and shocked I legit uninstalled the game and didn't touch it again for years 🤣I also love horror in bright and non-horrory games, especially if it's creepy on a psychological level or if it has this otherworldy/weirdcore vibe? If it makes sense.

Personally I felt like Grelod being so awful was the point, the dark brotherhood questline almost seduces you into their brand of evil.
It's like, of course you should kill Grelod, she's a cruel and abusive woman in an unchallenged position of power. You did the right thing! But now you're locked in a hut and being told you have to execute someone. Well, maybe it's okay? One'a a coward, another brags about how many want him dead, the other is very rude. Surely you can make a decision that's still good? Neutral at worst! And now they're welcoming you into their family, sharing stories, there's a useful word of power on that wall over there, you killed a disabled man who was just waiting for his sister, you got some fancy new armour that lets you sneak and stab real good! They're sending you after a bandit leader who ruined a young woman's life, that's good too! She wants you to kill her adoptive sister purely out of spite, and... well... it's part of the quest. What's one more at this point?
Oblivion was more of a: do an evil thing and be welcomed by like minded people, and it does it well! But I remember having a moment in Skyrim where I really thought about the person my player character was, to do all of the things they'd done, and being kind of shocked how little I'd questioned what the dark brotherhood had asked me to do. And sure part of that is because "it's just a game" and I wanted the story and the shiny quest rewards, but I do think the writers did a good job of paving your road to hell with good intentions.

I couldn't really recall any colorful games other than those you already mentioned, however, when you talked about how horror in games can be at it's most effective, in those unexpected moments, I got reminded of Half-Life 2s Ravenholm level. Didn't expect a horror level in an action shooter, it's one of the most memorable parts of the game for me. Also, love darkshire and duskwood. So many memorable questlines like Mor'ladim, Bride of the Embalmer, Sven's questline (Morbent Fel), Legend of Stalvan and the Scythe of Elune.

Sims 4 is generally a lot tamer than the sims 2 or 3. But it does have some creepily unsettling stuff.
    1. Summon Ocean Threat - mermaid sims can do an interaction on a swimming target sim, causing the target to be dragged into a black cloud, potentially killing them.
    2. Ghost horse - in Chestnut Ridge, for a narrow window of time each night, across a collapsed bridge, opposite a abandoned shack and an unnamed equine grave, you can make out a ghostly silhouette of a horse, accompanied by echo-y neighing.
    3. Pet cemetery - Brindleton Bay comes with it's own pet cemetery on it's island, which is nightly haunted by ghost animals. Some of the graves have cute custom epitaphs, but only one tomb has a specific premade ghost dog associated with it, Captain Whitaker, who is a part of the world's lore.
    4. Underwater statues - In a few worlds, there are unexplained underwater statues. In particular, in the ocean off the coast of Tartosa, there's a stone head. It goes completely unexplained, and is noticeably different from anything else in the world, so it is assumed to be a prehistoric relic.
    5. Lone grave - In Forgotten Hollow, there is a small, inaccessible island in the middle of a river. Apart from it being a human sim's grave, there is nothing at all indicating who it belongs to, how they died, how they are connected to the world/other sims, etc.
    6. Eyes in the mine - Same as Sims 3.
    7. Strangerville mystery - Conceptually, the whole mystery at the core of the Strangerville game pack is full of unsettling themes. A run down lab, a town crawling with agents, zombified citizens wandering the town after dusk and spouting cryptic dialogue, a story that has the town's problems get worse before they get better... It's honestly more of a pity that it's such a one-and-done pack that leans more into Stranger Things than Strangetown.

As far as creepy moments in colorful games go, Final Fantasy XIV has a long line of sidequests that'll always stick with me. You run into a small group of young adventurers early on and inspire them, only for them to attempt a dungeon that's far beyond their skills and their leader is mortally injured. Their healer was in love with him and his death broke her...later on in the game you encounter her in a harder version of the dungeon in which her beloved died as a self-made necromancer, who is not only raising an army of undead but also attempting a ritual to bring him back to life. Ultimately, you have to fight a twisted version of his disembodied head and afterward the mage is presumed dead. However, even later you can encounter her personally as a boss in a series of side dungeons where you find she's been trying ither methods of resurrection, and affer you deal with her here you're able to finally lay her to rest. Afterward, under certain weather conditions you can sometimes see her ghost in the town she lived in.
The thing that does it for me is that she was only 16 years old, and it was your actions as an adventurer taht inspired her and inadvertently led her down such a dark path. If you want to see her whole story in case I missed any details, you should look up Edda Blackbosom.

I once read what you describe here as the Dionysus Effect. That is, dark and horror elements being elevated by a previous state of colorful cuteness. If you like these kinds of games/stories/art, I recommend you look into "creepy cute". It's not exactly the same, as the horror and cute elements coexist, but still something worth checking out.
If you like deep lore, I encourage you to have a look at other Might & Magic games. I won't spoil anything in case you don't already know, but... yeah, the lore is insane. If you're looking for surprises, it definitely fits the bill! 😹💯
As for more examples, none come to mind aside from the well-known ones (DDLC and the like). And, well, my own game(s), but it's in development, haha. However, here's an example of a horror game that still manages to blindside you with a different kind of horror: Survival Crisis Z. By the title alone, you can probably guess the initial horror comes from zombies. The other one... is best experienced first hand... if you manage to make it work on modern hardware. 🐱👍

Three other quests in Oblivion that are not part of the main storyline or the guilds but are also pretty dark:
-Through a Nightmare, Darkly: it's one of my favorites for how the tone changes dramatically
-The Forlorn Watchman: Very tragic & spooky but satisfying in the end
-Peryite: one of the few daedric quests in an oblivion plane, it can be very scary too
Remembering all this quests always reminds my why I love this game so much! 😁

The Sims 1 was pretty creepy. I played it when I was a kid. I remember closing the game after a creepy song played and a ghost appeared walking through walls. The alien abduction scene also caught me off guard. Remember, it was the early 2000s, and conspiracies surrounding Y2K and ETs were at their peak.

I think i remember reading somewhere that the Devs said the Bella Goth in Strangetown is a clone by the aliens. The true Bella is in another planet (the one where she's a ghost, in the Sims 3). I am sorry I don't remember the name of the town/world. The Sims Lore talks about this, if I remember correctly.
Also, I am a social worker, and the first time I played Skyrim, I killed Grelog (actually, I always do). I was totally disoriented when this chick started grilling me about taking a dark brotherhood kill, lol. Can you imagine if you could really respond with like, "Who tf are you? Brotherhood, who? I just wanted to kill her because she's a c**t." LOL

I've been watching many Zelda videos lately. Many of the videos bring up what we thought as kids with these games: how does something so kid-friendly be so deceptively dark? And I didn't even play the intentionally dark game, Twilight Princess. Majora's Mask is both colorful and intentionally creepy, it's scariest parts are actually designed with high contrasting saturated colors. And the rest are colorful but not intentionally dark. Oblivion I put in the category of some Cartoon Network shows growing up. It's almost the cartoonish aspect that IS the creepiness. A more grounded style would feel more natural and grounded, setting a "creepy" mood, but it's just atmosphere, not something that messes with you like deceptive designs. Then there's games like Sim Park where you'll randomly have aliens, and the delivery is alarming at first. They destroy a lot and leave tech behind to write weird messages on the landscape.

Used the arrowes bug, was going around totally invis the whole game in like normal cloathes. Didn't even have to use armour at all. Hard to kill something you cannot see. Than that one quest that I remeber the most, is when you jumped into a panting and saved the panter.

Might not be as creepy and I might be misremembering from my Childhood,
but I know for Donkey Kong 64 there was a memory Error were the game, along with the console would crash after 5 hours or so of gametime.
As a Kid I loved to play that game and leave it on for quite awhile and pausing it etc. but once when I came back from dinner, I was in the starting tutorial area with DKs Treehouse, there was like a ingame earthquake, with shaking, sounds and everything and then it crashed.
I do remember being really freaked out, but I don't know if they intentionaly added this or I just had a bad dream back then,
but they did quite some coding black magic to fit that whole game into a n64 disk, wouldn't surprise me if they knew about the error and decided to just add this creepy effect to it.

Vampire the masquerade. For most of the game, you're fighting, sneaking, and talking. Not too different from elder scrolls in a way. But then you're given a mission to clear out a haunted hotel, and that entire quest feels like stepping into a horror film. There's no one to fight or talk to just voices, disappearing ghosts, and moving objects. Way creepier than anything that comes before or after in that game.

My favourite is the triple twist of the witcher 3's Blood and wine... It felt like oblivion. Then it turned super dark, buut still fairy tales and innosence despite knowing this is still the witcher... so it's not able to be whimsical. But hey, if a game comes across as a bit like oblivion but more precise it's cool.

I remember I was being attacked by some monster in Sheragoraths realm and after I killed it I has the message that someone noticed it. Was in the middle of the forest in another realm but okay. Just so you know Lucian doesn't show up if you sleep in the realm so I forgot all about it until I finished the quest and came back home to my castle. I was woke up in the middle of the night got out of the dialogue and immediately killed him. Here's the thing, I didn't know what to do with the body so I dumped his body into the corner of the room and plopped a cabinet on top of him. His head was still sticking out so for the rest of the game I just had to deal with that. I had every achievement in the game other than the dark brotherhood questline. Also don't the knights of the 9 dlc before doing the thieves guild questline. Learned that the hard way as committing crime or and this is true putting on the gray fox mask will immediately make you condemned giving you debuffs.

The sims 2 ds also has extra lore. (my favourite thing is that you get stranded in the middle of nowhere & are forced to become the owner of a hotel & have to please the residents who sometimes stay in the hotel. Aliens attack sometimes & sometimes you must become rat man. I can't sum it all up but Sims 2 DS is way more indepth than it should be for a ds downgrade of the PC game. There also may be a sims 1 ds version but I am unaware of it.

My scariest moment in a video game (not sure if anybody knows this but it’s basically club penguin except with pandas) was in Panda Panda, they had a haunted house with a graveyard, in the haunted house there was a secret room with a shadow of a giant scary panda who’s outline was illuminated by a neon green and there was a loud consistent screaming/roaring/growling noise (scared me so bad I begged my Mom to send me to narnia)

Sort of a reverse of this: there's the section in Bioshock 2 where you (spoilers) play as a Little Sister and you see things through her eyes, and what was a terrifying nightmare world flashes into a beautiful and lavish one and back again. You sort of get desensitised to the horror while playing the game, and getting the brief respite from it before suddenly being shunted back into it brings it into sharp relief and it's so much more horrifying as a result.

And then you come to the question: Hey, how exactly is it, that the player character nows instantly from the top of their head what the fine for necrophilia in Cyrodil is. Add that to the fact that the game doesn't state why you're in the imperial prison and... yes, unfortunate implications. 😄

It's not so much about the surprise to me, it's about how the horror creeps up in what feels like normalcy. Typical lovecraftian trope, story starts in a normal world with normal people, then the layers are peeled away one by one as the story goes, revealing ever bigger horrors

I mean, Minecraft is all about an ancient race of people who destroyed the world in their advancement for luxury, made portals to other realms, destroyed them to the point of turning it into Hell, and then fled to another realm, murdered all but one creature in the whole realm, and then all died out themselves, and now there are mentally stunted peoples using black magic to capture souls and try to summon the dead ancients as perceived gods, and there is a Warden at the core of the earth who searches for anything it can to kill, and cannot itself be killed as it rematerializes after death.

Второй пример - первый Mount and Blade и мод Prophecy of Pendor.
