I missed this when it was on TV but binge watched it a few years later in college via VHS. It affected me like no other movie or mini-series before it, as Lonesome Dove is also my favorite book. This is a great ending and reminds me of the ending in "A river runs through it".
Same here…much more than just a cowboy story. Very deep philosophical meaning for those who can glean it. I altered my approach to life after encountering “Gus” 35 years ago. Became much more easygoing, or tried to be anyway. Read the book many times, for comfort. Stole a lot of Gus’ sayings : ain’t scared of being lazy, the older the violin the sweeter the music, far too leaky a vessel to put much hope in, and on and on… Best? Tell the wife now and then, especially when drinking, “I’d like a poke”. 😂😂😂
The ending of the book was much more powerful. No melodrama or trying to tug at the heartstrings. Just bleak quiet sadness. It doesn't end so much as it just stops. Just like life.
@@henrychinaski3720 Is this really necessary? Can't we just enjoy a movie without having to insert our little zingers to show how witty we are? Why must we wear our politics on our sleeves? It's a great book and a great movie no matter what your politics are. Just take it for what it is and save the empty slogans for the campaign trail. For all the divisiveness in our politics today little quips like yours sure aren't helping. I await the snarky reply that I'm sure is coming calling me a snowflake or a libtard or some other meaningless cliche.

No western will ever beat it.
Best scene, still gives me chills!!
This always brings tears to my eyes.
Greatest ending in any movie. Music, scenery and all
The Perfect Western.
Damn, I love this scene. The entire saga he isn’t sentimental, and at the end he’s exactly that. Great character growth.
Agree best ending ever, followed by Jeremiah Johnson when he and the brave seem to call an end to the feud
One of the best.
Absolutely agree
Jeez , I love this story. I’m gonna cry..,
:They say you're a man of vision!"
I did

@@henrychinaski3720 The line that gets me is Gus on his death bed saying "Aye God Woodrow. It's been quite a party, ain't it?"

What were the last sentences of the book?
“They say he missed that Whore.”
You know, like VP Harris, that kind of a woman.
@@henrychinaski3720strange thing to say in a completely desperate setting but sure thing

@henrychinaski3720 Lori was a great character so you're actually giving Harris a compliment
Damn they don't make western like this anymore I'm so proud to be a Texan
And like he said hell of a vision
Watch 'a man called horse' next
I think they must have literally “one taked” this scene at golden hour. Incredible visually and emotionally.
