When Gus says, "Lori darlin' " it just melts my heart. Who knew an old, grizzled cowboy could be so tender? That's the secret of Duval's portrayal. The theme score accompanies the story perfectly. Nice rendition here.

He said that with such sweetness. Everytime I watch this series, I want to cry, it's full of such larger than life characters, yet all victims of their own humanity. Invincible, but not really. THE best western series, book, My favorite novel of all time, ever.

The second I heard this I heard Gus saying Lori darlin’ 🥺. It also leads into one of the most profound lines “if you want any one thing bad enough it’s likely to be a disappointment. The only healthy way to live is learning to like the little everyday things in life.” Or something close to that. ❤

I watch the fascinating DVD set, "Lonesome Dove", at least once every couple of months and I have
done so for years. I am now 73 years old and since even before I discovered "Lonesome Dove" I
long ago realised I had been born at least a hundred years too late.
I remember as a young child that my parents and my grandparents used to listen to me talking, especially when I was relating
with vivid excitement about the stories in the Buffalo Bill Wild West Annuals that they bought me each Christmas and they would often say, "He should've been born before us!"
Well, it wasn't to be of course and my health and old age being what it currently is, I can now only hang on to my old dreams of being a cowboy! I came closest to my dreams when I started working offshore in the North Sea in the late 1960s/early 1970s and by golly, those wildcat rigs in those days were full of Lonesome Dove characters! They came from Texas, Oklahoma, Lousiana and all the other oil states; why! there were even a few Canucks in amongst them! ;-)
As Gus asks Call in Lonesome Dove, "When were you the happiest?"
I can honestly say that my days working and living alongside those men "from The West" gave me the happiest days of my life.
And now I have an old fashioned peenanny [piano] playing in the background just to make things even more perfect.
Thank you so very, very much!
    Happy Days!

“All America lies at the end of the wilderness road, and our past is not a dead past, but still lives in us. Our forefathers had civilization inside themselves, the wild outside. We live in the civilization they created, but within us the wilderness still lingers. What they dreamed, we live, and what they lived, we dream.”
      ― T.K. Whipple
Sounds like this preface applies to you in spades, a bonafide cowboy at heart. I can only imagine the crew of characters you must have been part of on that rig. Thank you for sharing your story! Here's to many more years of watching "Lonesome Dove" and other fine westerns.

I teared up several times. This is an excellent piano arrangement. I think Basil Poledouris would be proud of this. It illustrates just how good his original composition was. You've captured exactly what he may have sat down and done at the piano when composing this piece before arranging it for full orchestra. I just love it when skilled musicians reverse engineer classic orchestral film themes to piano and play with the spirit of the original. They actually bring something entirely new. A job well done and a fine tribute. Thanks so much!

Quite frankly, the word "perfect" is one that I use sparingly. Maybe it's because so few things are in fact perfect. Holding a new born baby feels insanely perfect. A full moon on a cloudless night looks perfect. That very millisecond of time between awake and sleep feels dreamily perfect. I can only close my eyes absorb the melancholy atmosphere that I feel when I hear this masterpiece played by this incredibly talented musician. At 4:43 when the accompanying "strings" blend in.....all is perfect. Thank you for providing us with a beautiful few minutes of wide awake dreaming!

Not a lament, but an understanding of what I perceive this book/movie to be about - the journey of life, friends and yesterday. I can hear the music and it instills an emotion so deep that I can't relate to. I think it may be something that's in our DNA, while never to have stepped foot on a continent or surrounded by those from it, you hear something and it triggers an emotion we don't have a reason for. This piece was amazing, but more so, instills that feeling, both peace hand in hand with an emptiness, is my favorite. Most, if not all, may not understand it....but I hope I'm wrong on that. "Right from wrong" - Oh, how many arguments I have had on various boards, message-things, etc., etc., about this *exact* point! "RIGHT FROM WRONG!"
Nowadays, they *ALL* seem to ask and argue, why did Gus and Call hang "poor Jake"? Why didn't they take him back to a town/city so he could stand trial? They *ALL* ignore the fact that it was all happening way beyond the reaches of the Law!
Not a single person who asks that question seems to ever have bothered to take a look into life, history and the times of that era, nor the law that prevailed in those days. Instead, they seem to be comparing the happenings in "Lonesome Dove" with the rules and mores of today.
*YES*, it may have been a harsh law, but it was a law imposed so that others might not go down the same path - especially horse stealing! In those days, a man's horse could often be his life. To steal his horse was often to sentence the owner to death.
And the very main thing that people today who question such justice simply cannot understand is perhaps best explained by Gus: "You crossed a line, Jake. You ride with an outlaw you die with an outlaw." (Even poor old Jake tried to claim he "had never seen no line, Gus!")
Tough t*tty, Jake *YOU* crossed it - now, pay the price!

Secondly: Yes, i feel the same way about Gus and Call.. they just knew how to live life. So many great moments in that epic western. To me it´s also the best western ever made, period. And there are a lot and yes there are other really great ones, but this one just has everything and it´s so touching.
Thanks for finding my humble little not at all famous video :) I am always very happy when someone finds it :)

Lonesome Dove is by far the Best tv mini series ever. I dont think they could have picked a better Gus and Call than Duval and Jones. "I hate rude behavior in a man, Wont tolerate it." One of the best scenes ever. This was awesome. Thank you....

For the longest time I never really paid much attention to the music of Lonesome Dove. But after listening to this, wow, its no wonder the movie was so good. Its one of those things you really don't appreciate until its pointed out. I know I'm seven years late to the party, but thanks for posting such a beautiful video.

    Happy New Year everyone !!!
I am so happy to be fortunate enough to listen to this wonderful rendition of "Lonesome Dove" once again, when, for a while, it was touch and go.
Unfortunately I have been suffering from the same ailment as Gus - very bad foot in my case, rather than the leg - and the colour of the wound etc is just the same.
Well, what can you expect in your 80th year? They told me ... yep, they told me ... But I preferred to listen to Gus and enjoy the little things in life, like that glass of buttermilk in the morning and maybe a glass or two of whisky of an evening.
Well, *again*, I was never a man to do things in moderation - as I suspect some Lonesome Dove characters had the very same problem - so, we reap what we sow, though after reaping for almost 80 years, come next May, I have no real complaints.
And now, I am most joyous to welcome in a New Year once again in my life and to listen to this beautiful piano music as I write. I am now "in my cups" (03:30 GMT) and the drinks I have had tonight are the first for a few months. (I did not stop drinking with the intent of extending my lifeline; it was just the nausea after my huge binges made me so sick that I declared: "That's it! Enough!" and I stopped.)
Tonight I could not let such a night pass without a celebration.
So, may you all enjoy yourselves, "it's later than you think!", and may every single one of you, especially our honoured peenanny player, have a Happy New Year.
And as they say in Scotland: "May 2024 be the Very Best of Aa' !!! "
    Happy New Year!

This captures the emotion, which is life, believe. Beautifully played, i cannot hear this without feeling the journey, which was written so well. My heart responds to this in a way many may not understand. I stand at a point in which my dear friends, good men, have passed on our journey. The sound is magically peaceful but heavy on my heart. To the journey, to the challenges, to the day when we stand alone, it was a journey. Humbled
