The idea that 1/3rd of all men are gay but are just too worried to reveal it doesn't make any sense to me. I can relate to your story. You were brave and tenacious. Im so glad it worked out better in the end. I told my mom I was gay at 15.(I had been molested regularly by a man in his 50s since I was 11). She gave me the same murderer line and said if I ever told anyone I was gay it would destroy her marriage ( she was newly remarried and my new step father hated gay people). The next day I started saving and planning to leave. Within 2 months I left home. They never said boo about my exit. I traveled to the city and lived on the street at first. Later I got a job after a sympathetic gay man let me live with him. I finished high-school and later college. My family never changed. I saw them a few times and they pretended I was not gay to my face even as I tried to share positive aspects of my life with them. This week more than 40 years later my mother died. It's sad but I now feel free.

When a parent is scared of the harm that will be done to his gay kid by society, their first instinct is to protect that child, not be the first person to actually inflict that same harm they're worried about. Everyone deserves a second chance When I came out to my mother she was petrified, calling me the worst things and not talking to me for weeks. She was a devout Muslim, I could not blame her, people are conditioned to feel that people unlike them are the worst and should die. My mother always loved me and after that she did not know what to do and broke down, it was me who went downstairs after weeks to comfort her during my coming out It takes a while for people to acknowledge that such a thing does not define who someone is and you should respect the people who are willing to show regret and come to terms with that. My mother had a worse time than I did, she shows remorse and treats me like her son now When listening to what she had to say, it became clear to me that accepting this is harder than you might think and it isn't as simple as we would want it to be So is life There are people in my family who will never accept me, they will realize as a gay person and forget who I am entirely not my problem, I stay the same and remove the hateful people in my life It is their grief, because I can make some good ass fucking baklava and they're not getting it anymore

You are such a wonderful and strong man. Just think, with all the mountains you have had to overcome, you will be a beacon for some teen out there who needs light. All of who are gay have to be a light to youth who are questioning themselves. It's hard not having anyone to talk to. I'm 65 and grew up in the mountains of N.C. is a VERY conservative family in the 60's. Luckily, my parents outed me and accepted me as I was. I was so fortunate. I was 21 and in the Navy when that happened. But the previous 11 years were pure hell. I had no one to talk to until I came out. So to all of us, be out, be proud, be loving. When I was young, I wanted to have a family of my own. Now I'm 16 and my biggest wish is creating a home for lgbt people who lost their home thanks to them being a part of this community. It would've been fun to have a family of my own, but I realised there's other kids who need my help more. This person's story made me even more sure of this, so thanks for sharing his story. it's nice that the police made sure the teenager realized the extent of his actions and let him decide, it was graceful and strong of him to decide to leave rather than have the dad lose the job and impact the whole family.
Hearing a father treat his son like this breaks my heart. KG, good advice. I started coming out to people in order from the least to the most important. The first people I told were my colleagues at a part time job that I could quit any second if things went sour. I wanted to test it out and they were very supportive. Then I came out to some friends, then siblings and finally parents last. It was a good strategy to take baby steps. It also helped to build my confidence about people's reactions.
I have experienced that treatment, but from my mother. My father has always been there and supported me through the entire ordeal. My mother's side of my family is very homophobic despite having several gay family members. I was verbally and physically attacked by my mother constantly until I left home. I lived with my paternal grandmother until I finished high school. Although we try to be cordial, there's still a divide because my mother is unwilling to accept the fact that her youngest son(me) is gay. It used to hurt terribly, but thank God I came through it. It really does get better.
After all the terrible abuse.....the filthy name-calling, the phone calls to all of my friends' parents, telling them to keep their kids away from me because I was "queer", all the friends I lost, the sheer embarrassment and shame that I experienced at the hands of BOTH of my parents for being gay, ot was more than I could bear, so I stopped talking to them back in 2007. Cut to last year, when my youngest brother comes to visit me out of the clear blue, and he tells me that our dad has come out to our mother, first as bisexual, then eventually, 100% gay. I wanted to laugh, I wanted to say, "Good....they both deserve each other," but I couldn't do that. They have still never apologized to me, but that's ok, I'm finally over all of it, and I'm happy to be living my life without them in it. For most parents the very thought of disowning your kids and never seeing them again is unimaginable. You can't really be called a parent if you have it in you to do this, sometimes kids are better off without such toxic people in their lives.
You need to understand that this past generation is way less open to gays than the younger generation.. They're used to traditional relationships and it's hard for them to grasp the idea of being gay. They're not used to it. It doesn't excuse them from shunning gay people, but we also can't condemn them for having trouble accepting homosexuality. It's a hard thing to accept for Gen X. It's easier for Millennials to understand because we grew up in a society where it's accepted. They grew up in a society where it wasn't shunned, but it was highly frowned upon. We just need to move forward with our lives and stop worrying about the few people who are against gays, and help the other people to start adapting to a new society. Stop hating everyone. Love those who even hate you and live your life trying to understand where others come from, and we will all make more peace in the world. (no we can never have world peace but that doesn't mean we can't be nice to each other)

My parents are both Gen X and the best neighbors we ever had were a lesbian couple with two adopted babies. My parents were super fond of them, and they were basically like my other mothers. Too bad we had to move. Fortunately, they moved too and live five-ish miles away! They’re so nice! The moral of the story is, yes, Gen X is a bit less understanding of homosexuality, but some people have always been and always will be accepting.

sexual orientation doesn't exist. if it was possible for people to be born gay, then people would have been gay from the start of humanity's existence. considering how much easier it would be to find a male partner as opposed to a female partner in caveman times, logically all, or most cavemen would have been gay and at no point in time would it have been looked down upon. your sexuality is entirely up to the human brain, and is also usually due to wanting attention from others or the inability to find a sufficient partner of the opposite gender (which, as I said before, is usually more difficult)

Then you go into this argument about how most cavemen would be gay, as a male partner would be easier to find than a female partner, but you ridiculously fail to understand what sexuality is or how it works. We don't know much about sexuality, but from what we do know, the general consensus is that your sexuality is not able to be influenced by any sort of factor or variable, and anything of the sort has never been observed.

But honestly if it was completely natural for some people to be gay, it would have been accepted a long time ago surely. The idea that 1/3rd of all men are gay but are just too worried to reveal it doesn't make any sense to me. Surely in modern western society, where gays are widely accepted, everyone who believes they are gay should probably have come out by now.
Even if scientific studies show that being gay is natural for 1/3rd of men, it's more than likely a condition/psychological issue. I will get a lot of hate about that but literally - people in my country used to provide therapy for people who thought they were gay, and they were banned. Why? Couldn't tell you. Probably SJWs who just get offended by everything if I'm being honest.

I told my mom I was gay at 15.(I had been molested regularly by a man in his 50s since I was 11). She gave me the same murderer line and said if I ever told anyone I was gay it would destroy her marriage ( she was newly remarried and my new step father hated gay people). The next day I started saving and planning to leave. Within 2 months I left home. They never said boo about my exit. I traveled to the city and lived on the street at first. Later I got a job after a sympathetic gay man let me live with him. I finished high-school and later college. My family never changed. I saw them a few times and they pretended I was not gay to my face even as I tried to share positive aspects of my life with them. This week more than 40 years later my mother died. It's sad but I now feel free.

She was a devout Muslim, I could not blame her, people are conditioned to feel that people unlike them are the worst and should die.

Hearing a father treat his son like this breaks my heart. KG, good advice. I started coming out to people in order from the least to the most important. The first people I told were my colleagues at a part time job that I could quit any second if things went sour. I wanted to test it out and they were very supportive. Then I came out to some friends, then siblings and finally parents last. It was a good strategy to take baby steps. It also helped to build my confidence about people's reactions.

I have experienced that treatment, but from my mother. My father has always been there and supported me through the entire ordeal. My mother's side of my family is very homophobic despite having several gay family members. I was verbally and physically attacked by my mother constantly until I left home. I lived with my paternal grandmother until I finished high school. Although we try to be cordial, there's still a divide because my mother is unwilling to accept the fact that her youngest son(me) is gay. It used to hurt terribly, but thank God I came through it. It really does get better.
After all the terrible abuse.....the filthy name-calling, the phone calls to all of my friends' parents, telling them to keep their kids away from me because I was "queer", all the friends I lost, the sheer embarrassment and shame that I experienced at the hands of BOTH of my parents for being gay, ot was more than I could bear, so I stopped talking to them back in 2007. Cut to last year, when my youngest brother comes to visit me out of the clear blue, and he tells me that our dad has come out to our mother, first as bisexual, then eventually, 100% gay. I wanted to laugh, I wanted to say, "Good....they both deserve each other," but I couldn't do that. They have still never apologized to me, but that's ok, I'm finally over all of it, and I'm happy to be living my life without them in it. Sometimes, the hurtful things damage us so deeply that we just decide to cut our losses and stay away and move on with our lives; it's the only way I can finally get peace in my life.

It’s hard for all .. parents didn’t see this being apart of their family.. we all have hopes and dreams and this idea of how we want our family to be or look like.. it’s so disheartening to hear how his parents react to the news. They can be disappointed without being monsters.
It's awful that he had to go through that. I hope that times change so that no one will have to be nervous about telling their parents about their sexuality. I'm so happy that he had such a good friends to support him when he needed it.
For most parents the very thought of disowning your kids and never seeing them again is unimaginable. You can't really be called a parent if you have it in you to do this, sometimes kids are better off without such toxic people in their lives.
You need to understand that this past generation is way less open to gays than the younger generation.. They're used to traditional relationships and it's hard for them to grasp the idea of being gay. They're not used to it. It doesn't excuse them from shunning gay people, but we also can't condemn them for having trouble accepting homosexuality. It's a hard thing to accept for Gen X. It's easier for Millennials to understand because we grew up in a society where it's accepted. They grew up in a society where it wasn't shunned, but it was highly frowned upon. We just need to move forward with our lives and stop worrying about the few people who are against gays, and help the other people to start adapting to a new society. Stop hating everyone. Love those who even hate you and live your life trying to understand where others come from, and we will all make more peace in the world. (no we can never have world peace but that doesn't mean we can't be nice to each other)

Sometimes being nice is not enough or OK. We have to learn to pull the stop sign when its needed, for our safety and to live...not just to survive.
There are situations that we need to use the bad and the good. Just as he did.
My parents are both Gen X and the best neighbors we ever had were a lesbian couple with two adopted babies. My parents were super fond of them, and they were basically like my other mothers. Too bad we had to move. Fortunately, they moved too and live five-ish miles away! They’re so nice! The moral of the story is, yes, Gen X is a bit less understanding of homosexuality, but some people have always been and always will be accepting.
Say this to the people who hating gays
It'd be fine if they even tried to understand it. But most homophobes just send their kids out of home and don't bother trying to understand.
Take heart, many of us gay men across the globe have suffered in one way or another, some have been executed for their sexual orientation. These have made us stronger and realize the need to stand united.
