I love the Neurax Worm, but I aim for 0 deaths, and to simply turn humanity into a slave race by going up instead of to the right on the symptoms. There are even a few evolutions you can use that make the worm less detectable in that path. That's my favorite way of playing it.
The more severity you have, the more intense the disease is and the harder they will try and cure it all
This is why you ALWAYS get genetic hardening when the cure starts. Because if you wait too long, you can’t buy enough time with it because it’s too close to finishing. Also the same with genetic shuffling, since the first one does almost nothing and won’t save you at the end, but the later ones might
