Well, he could've saved himself the trouble, but i doubt he learns anything from it. My Cat has the tendency to not curl his tail in the kitchen which is very narrow, so we stepped on it more than once by accident. Guess who still doesn't curl up his tail.
It's so weird to me how he won't groom himself, won't tolerate even a little brushing. But will allow all of his fur to be shaved off. Mayonnaise, buddy. You're working against yourself here.
i guess it sorta makes sense that if he groomed himself, doing so would pull on the hair and cause pain, same as the brush, but cutting the hair relieving that tension from the other hairs stuck in the matting would mean "oh, this is nice" and he would allow it
Seriously 😂 My dog does this too though. Zero tolerance at home, but when it’s at the groomer or vet, out of her safe space and with a semi-strange human, she’s an angel. The absolute nerve
Cats are weird. A family friend had a cat that did not tolerate any brushing at home, but loved going to the vet to be brushed out. Our theory is that she just loved the attention
Yeah my 2 cats would definitely relate to this philosophy, they always look like they tolerate existence but don't like it. Unless I'm petting or feeding them, cheeky bastards
It's really sweet you didn't antagonize him for running out of patience, it always makes me sad when people insult cats or make jokes like 'this is why dogs are better' when I think cats resemble humans in the sense that we all have a time limit on how much we can endure something we're not comfortable with. I also never knew they were itchy under the matting, that's very good to know! I'll be sure to give my cat extra pets after each grooming session :)
Oh yeah, with dogs, too. It can be dangerous to have mats on any animal. They get wet underneath and the skin can start to ooze and attract bugs. Flies will lay eggs in the wounds. Then you'll have maggots which are eating the dying flesh. People don't realize this is possible and then some will put the animals down. The better option is to go to the vet, get antibiotics and fluids after cleaning off the maggots. The maggots will be doing you a favor until you get to the vet. Don't remove them at home. Someone I know did this and the dog nearly died of infection that the maggots kept at bay. Obviously don't let it get to that point, but it's easier to have happen than you think. Most people naturally think oh well the hair is matted and it's not pretty but they don't see what can really happen.
I agree! I think humans are more similar to cats. They have boundaries, a time limit, and need time to build a bond just like humans. I’m not saying dogs can’t have any of those but a lot of cats do!
Imagine, once I went to pick up my cat at the vet and the receptionist was like "Hahah, she's our mascot now as DEMON CAT" 🙈 My poor cat is actually soooo afraid of people, she pee/poop on herself at the vet and she growls because she's afraid but administrative staff thought it was funny to mess with her 🙈 I do have to admit that we did hear her scream from other side of the clinic and once in her transporter people were asking me if it was a cat or a dog growling. Anyway. Your comment made me think about this.
Several cats over the years? Jeez I'm 29 and have had my cat for 20 years. Still doing great. It'll be my only cat I ever have. How are all your cats dying?!?
I once shaved a cat like that. "Helmet fur" we called it, because it was like a solid SHELL. The cat wasn't able to fully stretch out or bend properly. Moving caused it to pull its fur out. The cat had been living in a barn before someone rescued it. Real sweet temperment, thankfully. You can imagine how happy that kitty was to get shaved naked!
For cats like that who aren't more tolerant, do you just have to sedate them? At that point it's got to be a pretty significant health hazard for them.
@@auroraourania7161 I believe in the video it was mentioned that less tolerant cats tend to need sedation both for their sake and the sake of the groomer! Of course it always brings its own associated risks as u said but it's often better and more humane than just pushing through resultingnin a significantly stressed out upset cat and an injured groomer
@@auroraourania7161 Yeah they have to be sedated, which is risky, although all sedation whether it be human or pet, is risky to begin with. In the case of mats though its necessary given if the mats don't come off. Then it turns into an issue of they can become infected or lose a lot of their mobility given the fur becomes so dense and tangled. The animal can't move anymore, and the fur will being to pull out of their skin. Along with leading to sores due to the trapped moisture within the mats. So at that point it either turns into euthanize the animal, or given them sedation that is mostly safe, and yeah bad reactions can occur, yet there are tests and so forth that can be done to reduce risk of injury. Yet the mats are a FAR worse health hazard than any sedation.
I wonder why the owners didn't take up brushing him if he's seemingly so tolerant? Or cam cats be trained to groom? You'd think there'd be some kind of solution so he doesn't need to get matted. I suppose intermittently shaving him would be the last option.
@@sipi2009 cats are supposed to learn how to groom from their mothers, or from other cats. Humans can't do much if they don't figure it out, or if they're just lazy. Many pets are very tolerant at the groomer or vet, but not at home. Mayo probably turns into a spiky ball of rage at home. There's only so much you can do for a cat who resists intervention, especially with a difficult coat like the Persian.
@@sipi2009cats can be tender skinned too, especially as they get older. There's only so many brushes on the market. But I'd wager he's a very tender skinned kitty and brushing feels like you're ripping his fur out. Also he's not lazy. He has a genetic disadvantage, he literally can't breathe in some positions he'd need to get into to clean himself fully and properly. He has the drive to groom himself, shown by his licking and creating hot spots. But he got a terrible draw in the genetic lottery. Wirey long thin but very dense fur and a flatter face with very wide cheeks. I don't think it's a breeding mishap, cats are significantly more sneaky than dogs when it comes to being in heat. It seems cat breeders are much more apt to have responsible breeding practices in terms of genetic pairing. Or perhaps there's just fewer of them to compare to when you have literal puppy mills going on. Coorelation isn't causation, of course. But seems logical without me googling anything. What a gentle cat. He kept giving you the sweetest looks and really, he was very well behaved overall. Cats aren't stupid. He knew you were helping him, he just got tired and stressed out. I had a Persian like Mayo once upon a time, back in the '90s. He was a stray who wandered into our yard one day. We never could find his owner and he did not have a collar or tag. We named him Fang, because he had one fang that stuck up over his lower lip, making him look rather like one of the "Wild Things" from Maurice Sendak's famous children's book. We had to take Fang for a quarterly shave and groom because he would NOT tolerate brushing or bathing (my ex still has scars on one arm from trying to remove some of Fang's dingleberries.) He was normally a very gentle and affectionate cat, though. His front paws had been declawed by his previous owner, which shocked and horrified us. I would never do such a thing myself. I have to admit though that I did benefit from it. This was because Fang loved to wake me up in the morning with really potent deep tissue back massages. He was a preternaturally strong cat, so the backrubs that felt so nice without claws would've been extremely painful had he still been in possession of his personal weaponry. One day we threw a summer barbecue and Fang came downstairs to sample the ribs. He'd just been to the groomer and smelled of fancy cologne. He strutted proudly across the deck towards the meat tray, and one of our guests called out--I will never forget this--"Hey, who's the little man in the lion suit?" RIP Fang, one of the best kitty friends I ever had.
You all dont know the owner. My cat doesnt have fur that is able to mat but she HATES being brushed and the times where she does allow it, its only above her tail. And she wont sit still, and if you hold her to sit still, she gets aggressive. We rescued a cat named Satchell that had lived like this for most of his adult life, we got him when he was 14 years old, matted and crabby. He too was unenergetic and "lazy". When the day came that we shaved him, he was so patient and took it like the little man that he was. After we had shaved him, he began a regular routine of cleaning himself and running around after our other cat. I truly believe that he learned to groom himself by watching our other cat Midnight. After that we shaved him about once a year and he loved it. It really improved the quality of his life and I'm glad that Mayonnaise has this opportunity too.
Persians have a hard time grooming themselves. Their fur is too long and thick. I have what is probably a Persian Maine Coon mix and whenever he tries to groom anywhere other than his paws or chest he gets his 'beard' fur stuck in his mouth. He thinks he is grooming himself, but really he is just licking his beard and chest fur. If we don't take him to the groomer he literally starts to smell.
My cat doesn't groom himself either, he's a manx. He also doesn't like brushing, so instead of fighting him a few times a week, I just shave(trim) him every now and then. It's not the tidiest cut, and I'd prefer not to shave but it keeps matts out and his butt fur cleaner.
When I was in 2nd grade my best friend had a Persion cat that LOVED water. When my friend took a bath Tuffy would jump into the tub with her and swim around. It would take forever for him to dry. In 1962 there were no such thing as blow dryers. Crazy cat, but he never met a person he didn't like.
Persian cats notoriously love water. I have tried giving my Persians a water fountain several times, but they always end up flooding the kitchen with their splashing and playing in the water. 🙄
My late Persian purred every time she had a bath, sometimes when she got dirty she'd even sit next to the tub and wait patiently for us to figure out she wanted a wash. I really miss her, she was a real queen. A truly winderful breed, but needs a lot of care and at least one daily brushing.

When I helped with rescue there was a cat where the entire top of the coat was a solid brick of fur with dust and debris mixed in. The cat had been living for a few years in a small crawl space and rubbing its back on the wood beams above for that time. When we started to remove the mass of mat the cat just sat there for over an hour while we got it off, looked pretty happy after!
I adopted a cat from the city shelter that had huge mats on her sides and legs, much like this one. The back was fine, so she had a thin strip along the spine left that flopped down on each side like bangs. The mat was pinning her legs together like hobbles, she was so happy to be loose even with the silly cut.
i can’t even imagine how painful and itchy that pelt was, i paused on a frame in the bath where he stares at you and he looks so grateful for helping him 🥰what a handsome boy

Buddy, if we don't take care of your fur, it's gonna get really matted and uncomfortable. "I know" Ok, so are you gonna clean yourself? "No" Let me brush you, then "No"
This is exactly my cat. I have 2, both with long hair, one never gets matted, she’s constantly grooming, the other is lazy and will not let me touch him with a brush.
There’s three types of people when it comes to naming cats, the ones that name based on looks (e.g ginger, licorice, goldy, etc.) and the people who literally name it randomly (mayonnaise, velociraptor, bag) and then the people who name it ironically like a black cat unlucky or a white cat called ginger.
I have a Siberian/Maine Coone who is gray and black. His name...is Kitty. There is a black and white cat that decided he wanted to be ours (but he lives outside) that is part Sphynx and something else that causes him to have fur..we call him K2 (Kay-Two) for Kitty Two.
I have known a handful of persians and all of them loved being clipped during summer. Maybe not the process itself, but their mood and demeanor is like night and day. Once Mayonnaise grows back an inch or so of fur he can be brushed with a boar hair brush and that will feel sooooo good that he might actually decide that he likes being groomed.

I still think dogs are better because they don’t resemble humans, but sure
Imagine, once I went to pick up my cat at the vet and the receptionist was like "Hahah, she's our mascot now as DEMON CAT" 🙈 My poor cat is actually soooo afraid of people, she pee/poop on herself at the vet and she growls because she's afraid but administrative staff thought it was funny to mess with her 🙈 I do have to admit that we did hear her scream from other side of the clinic and once in her transporter people were asking me if it was a cat or a dog growling. Anyway. Your comment made me think about this.

Ouch.
Oooh poor baby ! I'm happy he or she was rescued, and I hope he/she is well cared for today !
The way he keeps rubbing on you tells just how much he's enjoying being shaved. It must be such a relief for him. Poor baby.
I think mayonnaise is the perfect storm of too old to care and not shaped for it to be an easy job. I think he looks a lot like the Cheshire cat. Especially when he's in his bath with those big yellow eyes and wider face. ❤

He strutted proudly across the deck towards the meat tray, and one of our guests called out--I will never forget this--"Hey, who's the little man in the lion suit?"
RIP Fang, one of the best kitty friends I ever had.

Poor guy, has to deal with the outcome of his lazy self grooming and when he tries to improve after getting rid of the mats he hurts himself
Hes probably too old to groom well that or his fur is too thick to groom
Persians have a hard time grooming themselves. Their fur is too long and thick. I have what is probably a Persian Maine Coon mix and whenever he tries to groom anywhere other than his paws or chest he gets his 'beard' fur stuck in his mouth. He thinks he is grooming himself, but really he is just licking his beard and chest fur. If we don't take him to the groomer he literally starts to smell.
@@id.rather.not_ video description says he is four.
He's a Persian. It is literally impossible for a Persian cat to properly groom itself. Their fur goes deeper than the barbs on their tongues.
