If you're so worried about weight, hit the gym and lose that extra cheeseburger pounds before making your knife weaker. So BK ticks the same check marks as all these other "budget survival knives" it's typically a sub $150 knife, it's 1095 carbon steel, comes with a shitty sheath, shitty handles, and has its name attached to someone or something famous... This is no different than ESSE being attached to the survival school, Tops connected to famous survivalists, Gerber riding Bear Grylls ass, and of course BK being attached to Kabar... Just because your name is linked to something famous doesn't mean your product is worth a shit. In fact it's the opposite more times than not. Using clout as a way to make money with an inferior product. BK is not exception. I've handled many BK knives in my lifetime, and not a single one stood out to me as anything special. The infamous BK9 is one good hard whack away from snapping in half. A large knife, only 3/16 thick, 1095 and Skeletonizied tang... It's a recipe for fucking disaster. And yet still toted as being iconically the best bushcraft knife. Seriously take the $150 somewhere else and get something worth a damn. Or here's a thought, save your money and drop $400 on a TRC Apocalypse or a Fobos Tier 1C and have a knife that will last generations. Or spend a little less and buy a Work Tuff Gear, doesn't even have to be the Ares. A Nomad, Puzon Bowie, Kodiak, etc. Anything in the WTG lineup is leaps and bounds above the crap being peddled by so called tactical/bushcraft knife conglomerates. One important thing about the sheath: It's not like Cold Steel's Secure-X sheaths, whose glass-reinforced nylon construction dulls the edge with just a few draws from it. I have had no issues with the BK-18's sheath dulling the blade. So, the cost of the American-made sheath does increase the BK-18's initial purchase price, but it does save you the additional cost of needing to purchase the Kydex sheath that most Cold Steel fixed blades are going to need before you take them into the field.
True. Cold Steel, Fällkniven and Extrema Ratio sell sheaths that are literal trash. Every 12 € Mora comes with a sheath. They should be forced to put a warning label on their sheaths "This sheath will dull your blade after just a single use", ideally combined with a picture of a ruined edge...
I have many Cold Steel fixed blades and I've never had a problem with their sheaths other than they mostly have belt loops and not belt clips and I have to buy aftermarket clips for them

Nice test! Nice to see its limit. I bought this knife last year on sale in Black to throw in my hiking bag. I stripped and patina the blade, added micarta scales. Please test the TOPS HOG 4.5. Its built the same way as a BK16 but with a thicker blade.

Performed pretty good for a sub $100 knife, but your probably better off spending an extra $25 and getting an ESEE 4 or better yet spending $60 less and getting a CS Recon Tanto or SRK That GaGa color looks just like a Glock 19X - they call it Coyote brown Excellent diving BTW - looks a little painfull especially those face first entry flops with the big splash 👍

Whitling on a piece of wood isn't generally going to show you weak spots on a knife or if the edge is prone to chipping or curling. Stabbing a car will.
If it ever should happen that you are stuck with your carry knife as your only survival tool or in a situation where you have to use it for some life saving task, you have an idea what the knife can do or what you should not do. Chances are of course .001% of this happening to people that carry knifes on a daily basis. But you never know . . . . And the videos are entertaining
I agree that for these little companion knives that are not meant to be choppers or primary survival knives, these kind of videos are more entertainment than anything, but still good to know what kind of extremes these materials/designs will and won't hold up to...and pretty damn entertaining
Yup,better than 1095. Thats why KA-BARS gmand beckers have better edge stability than 1095,Carbon V they use is tougher than 1095 and also has Vanadium carbides that cut better than 1095.

1095CV is more accurately 80CrV2 and SK5 is similar too if I remember, as is I think the chinese #Cr steels. And IMO 80CrV2 is one of the best steels for a fixed blade, not 1095.

The handle is slick, but the shape of the handle makes it way more easy to slide towards the blade. And the lack of a well rounded guard makes the hand hit the square/sharp angled blade. Unpleasant. You did a stabbing test with the Mora Basic 511 and also the slick handle of the Buck 120 . I can't remember you saying there were big problems there regarding the handle. Do you remember that... With the Mora you can nicely keep the thumb on the pommel when stabbing. But even without it , the sliding of the hand wouldn't be as bad as with this BK-18. The tang was 'very' hollow indeed. I prefer a well made narrow tang. Those are plenty tough. Historical swords have shown this in plenty of wars. Full tang is not a need. Ofcourse, some don't even trust their own pants. And so they wear a bealt and braces at the same time.
I was very impressed with that knife test. And the fact that it is not a full tang knife, that was amazing. I noticed on the spine there is a slight groove. Maybe that have something to do with the blade strength when it was worked on the metal pole and the brick?

The carbon steel sharpens so easy, that I'm not sad when someone makes a mistake. And I flattened the spine, so it can do a lot of bush crafting too.

Nice entertainment but hardly a serious knife application.😂 For all normal users: this knife is perfectly fine for all work appropriate to the size of the knife. Anyone who knows what a knife is intended for will enjoy this inexpensive tool. Fortunately, I have never had to pry open car doors or hit metal posts with knives in my life to date and this will be the case for an estimated 95% of users. Of course, the knife comes in an ordinary steel, so it's not super-fancy-tactical, but the price isn't super-fancy-tactical either. For slippery polymer handles, there are remedies such as sandpaper, round file or Dremel - problem solved.

The scales are shit on purpose. So you have to buy the micarta scales, too. Schrade is doing the same but at least their knives are cheap to begin with.
i want to still like the blade for some odd reason i wish i had seen it being stabbed with in a upwards motion on the car door then maybe we would have seen its capabilities, but obviously after your video its not worth the high ticket they want id be sold at $60 tho

I think the ka-bar heat treat will hold a decent edge and *shouldn’t* break if you don't try to chop through mild steel more than a few swings.
