That's really awesome Joe. This is so much work for you, I can see that and you do a great job demonstrating what a blade can and cannot take. Huge shout out to you for all your hard work. This took a lot of effort, and a lot of risk to you physically. Wear the Kevlar man! I will point out though, we are beginning to press the outer boundaries of what constitutes a reasonable warranty claim...
thanks a lot! It was a sunny day, we dont have much of those! so i got some Vitamin D! haha!!!! it is an awesome blade!!!! probably the hardest test ever!!! 3 tip tests is a lot!!! and with the brick everything breaks!
It's a really interesting design. It covers bushcraft tasks, survival tasks and a bit of everything else. There is no obvious BS on it. I was so surprised how strong it is despite the flat grind. The quality and finish is more like on a gentlemens knife that you want to keep safe. But it can take more than many of the knifes that just look super tough. The one who made this sure has skills and talent.
Chapter 2 of the BFK!!! Wow, what an epic watch - both for you and the blade. The baseball bat making an appearance was peak Marlboro, that needs to make it into your future videos, had me rolling man. The knife...performed great! I could see many, many other knife tips breaking with the style of tip testing you did on this one. Tree action awesome, car action awesome, stump, brick, rod...your best videos are the ones when you are destroying not out of anger (well, those are great too) but it's a special treat to see you testing something you really enjoy, and I could tell you enjoyed this one, despite the blade trying to kill you several times - just like the first one! Definitely had the Ares vibes through this one. And you even threw in the pomfrita!!!! Hats off to Nathan - kept his word, just a stand up man. Hopefully enjoyed this as much as we did. It's a rare character that embraces testing and feedback like he does when everything is on the line. You are at your very best. Now make sure to wear that kevlar stuff so we can have Joe X around for a lot longer. Marlboro!!!
hey thanks for your comment! Nathan offerd me already another blade, for me to keep, he emailed me today already! truly a man of his word! not many out there!!!! baseball bat will stay till it is done! i broke my CS shovel! u are right, i do a better test when i enjoy it, my hate crimes on the BUSSE were a bit too much!
That was a very tough one! That kind of rounded tanto tip was very impressive I think. Edge and handle, great knife!! If they get the production version as good as this prototype, this could become a big hit. I hope ! Thanks for the hard work and al your sweat JoeX! Great job my friend 👍
Ah hab erst jetzt bemerkt dass das Messer ja ein 3V DELTA-Heat treatment hat. Sehr geil daß Du das getestet hast. Vielleicht im Titel hervorhenen dass es ein Delta 3V ist.
I like large knives. I always watched your reviews before I purchased a knife that you reviewed. Thanks for the sharing and making these videos. They are really helpful. I really like your videos. Please keep it up. Thank you.
I don't think I have heard you say perfect so many times about a knife. I am looking forward to this offering from Carothers performance knives. 👏 Thank you Sir . Please wear your safety gear . Dont want you to go out doing what you love. I know your next door neighbors would be thrilled , I would not. I smoke camel non filters . Go Joe Camel 🐫
Awesome blade! Thanks Joe for, again, a great video and Nat from Carothers for providing the knife to Joe. 😍 Do you know, if and when will the "Fat BFK" go in to production?😉
@@joex Currently they are out of stock for 3V and Magnacut. Many TH-camrs (like Gideon) tested these knives and they love the blades. Unfortunately they did not tested as hard as you :-)
Big and beefy AND nice and pointy. Me likey. Prefer a sheath that has more thumb push pull flangey thing but those can be made aftermarket. I like the point. And looks easy to convex. And I really like the minimal choil area I prefer that kinda solid edge
On my BFK, the sheath does have a nice ledge where I can leverage my thumb and push on it to get the blade out, similar to what you are describing. The loop (as Joe points out) is the one part of the sheath that is not as refined, and in practice, sometimes the nylon webbing deforms under the pull, but that can either be changed or modified. I think I'd like just a skosh more retention as well, but that is easy enough to change w/ a hairdryer.
You should test Böker Bronco. It's a 3V knife that is not too expensive. Used to be 130€ now it's like 170 but still not too expensive for a 3V knife. They say it's hardened above 60 though, so shouldn't be the toughest but could be interesting.
This one was hardened to 60.5. 3V can be very tough even at higher hardnesses. The abrasion resistance and edge retention is world class and the toughness is almost as good as a simple low hardness spring steel. It really is the perfect steel for a knife blade.
Hello Joe, i have a question. i really like ur content, btw so what is better for self-defense? 2 rambo knives or the cold steel trench hawk? What looks more scary im asking because a lot happens in my city
The knife handle and scales are just as important as the rust of the blade. I’m watching now waiting to see what happens to the knife handle and scales.
Some good old 3V. I knew this one would take a licking. I love my FOBOS Tier1C in 3V. If I ever need to dig a foxhole or cut through a helicopter door, I know it's up to the task. To be honest, properly heat-treated 3V should have even survived the rock, lol. That heat treat is suspect...
The knife did well, but let's also keep in mind that it was built specifically for Joe X testing. Very thick stock. Short blade to keep leverage from taking too much effect. Modified tanto tip So thick behind the edge that it could not cut the nail. Pretty much a sharpened prybar. Definitely not a knife to use for, well what a knife is designed for. Thats a very big disadvantage to the other knives compared to it. Plus, the fact that the stump looked like it had already been softened up by previous knives. And the tip still broke. I'm nearly certain that most of the other makers could design a special Joe X blade and fair just as well. It's definitely more impressive for the knives that made it without special treatment like this one. We all seen how the same model knife without special treatment did. Even the Cold Steel AK 47 redesigned with thicker stock and modified tanto tip would do just as well I believe. I believe the tests are being decided a lot more on the design than the steel itself.
I'm not saying CPK knives are bad, but I'm not seeing much of a improvement over normal 3v? Obviously they had to make the blade thicker... just like normal 3v!? So for the price and availability I'm not seeing any benefit at all!? Plus everyone says they don't stay sharp nearly as long
CPK's Delta 3V heat treatment results in more carbon trapped in the martensite, which increases edge retention and corrosion resistance without affecting the toughness of the steel. This will not be noticeable in JoeX's tests, which are all about toughness, but will be noticeable in normal cutting tasks.
Broken? Did you even watch the video? Are you suffering from comprehension skills issues? Anything can be broken eventually, this one took special treatment to get there. I swear to God, social media has made a mush of everyone's brains. Can we go back to forums please? I miss rational discussion.
@NateAIM I apologize, I didn't watch all the video. I skipped parts and went to the point where the knife broke. Now, I watched it and the knife behaved very well.

I think the knife broke where the chip was created during the tip test.
